Re: [Elecraft] Headset Hubbub
It turns out that while Yamaha has discontinued the CM-500 headset-microphone as a retail item, It is still being manufactured as an accessory for a Yamaha LC4 music learning system. This is a system where all the students in the classroom wear a headset and the teacher can talk to everyone at once, or converse with individual students, similar to the language learning labs many of us sat in back in high school. A large music distributor, sweetwater.com, sells the Yamaha language learning system and has occasionally had CM-500s available at a reasonable price. I bought one there not too long ago. Their website is not currently showing the headset as available, but you might try giving them a call. The salesperson who assisted me was named Ritchie. I have no relationship with the firm other than being an occasional customer. "So now I open again for other suggested headsets in the $100 range. The CM500 was a gaming headset so that could be a source. This is going to be a gift for a friend who badly needs something. Any more ideas?" I had been using my Yamaha HP-1 headphones on my Kenwood TS-590. I decided they were too good for amateur radio and wanted to keep them in good condition. I had followed the threads on the CM-500 and purchased Koss SB/45. They are far from the quality feel of the Yamaha but are reasonably comfortable and shut out external sounds better. I used them to make several CW DX QSO and they worked fine. Not as nice as the Yamaha for listening to the split pile up over a 3 kHz span but quite adequate for the job. Very few phone QSO with them but no complaints with the frequency response. I have not hooked up the microphone yet. #1, contact Amazon customer service and inform them what you reported here. Some years ago I had a similar situation with a Baofeng handheld, it came with frequencies programmed in it. Amazon was not happy and immediately issued a refund. Years ago I bought the CM-500 and a Logitech gaming headset at a much lower price. (For my K3 and Flex-6300). They both worked very well on both rigs and I received similar audio reports. The headset padding did not last as long, but considering it was 1/3rd the price of the CM-500, that was acceptable.
