[Elecraft] K2 + KPA100 + KAT100

2015-08-08 Thread Kevin Schache

Hi to all,

My K2 includes the KSB2 SSB, KDSP2, and the K102. The external KAT100-1
ATU has also been completed.
I've just received kits for the KNB2 and the KPA100 and I'm planning to
complete them in that order.

After a lot of research in the archives of this list, I've now belatedly
decided I want to keep the K2 for QRP portable and keep the KAT100 and
the KPA100 separate in an external EC2 enclosure.
I see that I can order the KAT100PNL to convert the KAT100-1 to a
KAT100-2 but I'm uncertain what panels are included in that kit.
This is probably a stupid question but, Is that all that's required to
convert the KAT100-1 enclosure to an EC2 with space for the KPA100 ?
I'm cross with myself for not thinking this out before I placed the last
order.

Is there anything else I will need ?
Or do I have to buy a complete EC2 ?

Thanks and 73's

Kev,

You will need the EC2 as well as the KAT100PNL kits. The KAT100PNL kit
has only the front and rear panels as well as the headers required for
the KAT100 board.

You may also want the tilt stand if you want to tilt it the same as the K2.

[Elecraft] [K2] KPA100/KAT100 Control Section Current

2011-09-24 Thread Brian - N5BCN
My current setup is a K2 with a remote KPA100/KAT100 in an EC2 enclosure.

The K2 is powered by a KBT2 that is connected to a smart charger. The
KPA100/KAT100 is powered by an external power supply.

I've noticed that the current drain as indicated by the K2's internal meter
increases 80 mA just by plugging in the KPA100/KAT100 control cable into the
K2's KIO2. I see the increase in current regardless if the KPA100/KAT100 is
off or on (I can also hear a relay latch by plugging in the cable). I'm
assuming this extra current is somehow related to the KPA100 and/or KAT100's
control section?

This has thrown a minor curve ball into my setup. My goal was to operate
QRP by simply turning off the external power supply to the KPA100/KAT100,
but the K2 still provides some 80 mA of current to the external unit even
when it's off, which I'm sure will have a measurable impact on the battery
run time.

Any suggestions besides just unplugging the control cable between the K2 and
KPA100/KAT100 every time I want to go QRP?

Re: [Elecraft] [K2] KPA100/KAT100 Control Section Current

2011-09-24 Thread Don Wilhelm
Brian,

Yes, the KPA100 control circuits must be supplied with current from the
base K2 so it can switch bands in sync with the K2 - the KPA100 Low Pass
Filters are in the path from the base K2 to the antenna. In addition,
the wattmeter in the KPA100 has to function even though it is not powered.

An additional wrench in the works with regard to your plan - the
KAT100 will not receive power if you unplug the KPA100 power and do not
separately power the KAT100. The KAT100 behavior is a little different
if it is directly attached to the base K2 (the wattmeter in the KAT100
is used by the base K2) With the KPA100 in the path, the wattmeter in
the KPA100 is used to measure the power output level so the K2 can
adjust the power.

If you leave the SmartCharger in place when you are operating at the
home station, I would think that will keep your battery topped off with
no problem - if it does not keep up, just increase the bulk charge rate
from the SmartCharger, that is only a resistor change. I assume when
you operate in the field, the KPA100 and KAT100 are both disconnected
from the base K2, and battery drain would be as normal for a K2 powered
by the internal battery.

[Elecraft] k2 + kpa100/kat100 Power problem

2010-01-11 Thread DAVID Nachbaur

Hello all I have the K2 with the KPA100/KAT100 in an EC2 case and running that
configuration. I get full power out of the unit on all bands but anything above
the 10 watts is automatic 100 watts. there is now in between The display does
show any setting that I want. for example I can dial up 50 watts. but it will
be 100 watts or 30 watts I still have 100 watts as I scale up throught the
range of the power control. Any suggestions where I should start. I did check
my cables and all seems to be ok I have it running through my logging program
ok. So frequency and mode control are working ok.

Re: [Elecraft] k2 + kpa100/kat100 Power problem

2010-01-11 Thread Don Wilhelm
David,

The wattmeter in the KPA100 is not signaling the output power back to
the base K2 microprocessor. The most common cause is damaged diodes in
the wattmeter. To assure yourself that this is the case, remove the
KPA100 and run only the base K2 - if the base K2 can control power
properly, the problem is in the KPA100.

Check diodes D16 and D17 in the KPA100, and while you are at it, you may
as well get 4 of the 2N5711 diodes and replace the 2 in the KAT100 as
well. Then for the future, make resolve to disconnect the antennas when
not in use. The most probable cause of failure is a surge from
lightning or even rain/snow/wind static that caused the diodes to be
damaged.

There are a few other possible causes of that kind of failure, but check
the diodes first, and if the diodes are good, ask again and we can guide
you to the real failure spot.

[Elecraft] K2/KPA100/KAT100 Tuning Issue

2009-04-18 Thread Jon Perelstein
I have a relatively new K2/KAT100/KPA100 (K2 serial # 06550) with the KAT100
controlled from the K2 via the serial cable.

Occasionally (and I do mean occasionally as opposed to sometimes or
frequently), when I hit tune on the K2, the display on the K2 correctly shows
20 watts, but it doesn't show anything for the SWR.  In addition, I don't hear
any relays switching in the KAT100 and the front-panel SWR diodes on the KAT100
remain wherever they were at the last tune I did.

When this happens, it appears to stay in tune mode until I hit the tune button
again, at which time it comes out of tune.  If I then hit the tune button still
another time, it does a proper tune and ends with a good SWR (whatever is
typical for my antenna on the particular band I'm on).

Once, and once only, instead of displaying the power, the K2 simply displayed
'END'.  That cleared when I hit tune a second time, and when I hit tune again
after that it did a good tune.

I have not noticed any pattern in terms of band or mode that I'm in when this
happens.  I haven't noticed it happen at low power (i.e., below 11 watts), but
I haven't operated the K2 at that level very much (I still have my K1 for QRP).

Does anybody have any idea why this is happening?  Is it a problem?  If it is a
problem, what would I look at to see if it can be fixed/eliminated.

Thanks,

Jon

[Elecraft] [K2] KPA100 KAT100 in EC2 For Sale

2009-04-13 Thread W4HDM

I have a new KAT100 tuner (built March 4th, 2009) with a KPA100 w/KIO2 in a EC2
enclosure with the 3'' tilt stand.

The amp just received the KPA100UPKT, KPA100MODKT, KPA100SHIELDKT, and the
latest firmware (1.10).
Although the EC2 was purchased new (Feb 2009), it has a few very slight scuffs
on the sides. The amp portion came with the K2 I purchased used in Jan. 2009.
The radio was advertised as never used. S/N 473 ... it looks like the amp may
have been installed later.

I am selling this because I do not need high power, this rig will be used for
portable operation. I used the amp and tuner this weekend for the SKCC Sprint
and it appeared to operate as it should ... no problems.

I will include the short side of the control cable so that you can add it to
your existing cable or I would be willing to trade the complete cable for your
regular cable. The sale will also include the manual (Ap and Tuner), a short
BNC jumper and the power cord. All you will need to hook this to your K2
(assuming you have the KIO2 on your K2) will be a short coax jumper with pl259s
terminated on each end, and the control cable assembled (unless you trade yours
for mine)

Pictures available on request. Live demo via my Live Shack Feed can be
arranged. http://w4hdm.camstreams.com

[Elecraft] K2: KPA100 KAT100 in EC2 enclosure

2009-03-09 Thread Randy Moore
I'm considering adding the KPA100 and KAT100 to K2 #337, and building
them together in an EC2 enclosure so that I can leave my K2/10 in its
QRP state with the PA and ATU outboard. I have found info on this at
http://www.kk7p.com/k2kpa100.html and I've downloaded the KPA100 and
KAT100 manuals. Just wondering if anyone has done this recently on an
older K2 like mine and if there are any gotchas that I should be aware
of. I know I have to do the A-to-B upgrades (some already done) and
upgrade my firmware. Anything else? Does this configuration work well?

Re: [Elecraft] K2: KPA100 KAT100 in EC2 enclosure

2009-03-09 Thread Don Wilhelm
Randy,

The KPA100 and KAT100 in an EC2 enclosure works FB.
Order the KAT100-2 and the EC2 case. The KPA100 cables (except for the
speaker) plug into the headers on the KAT100-2 board, so no change to
the KPA100 are needed. The info by Lyle Johnson was for the KPA100
alone in the EC2, adding the KAT100-2 makes the task easier - just plug
it in and connect a BNC cable from the K2 to the KAT100 AUX RF input.

You may want to change the 15 uH inductor on the KIO2 AUX2 board to a
toroid - 12 to 14 turns on an FT23-43 or FT37-43 core will do, but the
smaller core fits better. I have seen several of those small chokes go
open when used with both the KPA100 and KAT100 mounted externally.

Re: [Elecraft] K2, kpa100, kat100!

2009-02-19 Thread Don Wilhelm
Brett,

Congratulations on your new and improved K2/100 station.

Yes, the PA current goes up quickly when measuring for the bias level,
and I don't know of a better way. Just repeat several times until the
initial current is correct.
The first reading on your DMM is probably not correct due the timing
within the DMM, but the second one will be the correct current. The
current will begin to climb even on the rd cycle of the DMM reading.
Make the final adjustments to the bias in very small increments, going
into TUNE and out again for each trial.

 Shouldn't things be more stable?

Quite a slick setup though, the pa and tuner can be remote, and the K2 sits

The only bug me thing is the relays in the kat100 are LOUD when tuning!
