It looks as if Thom K3HRN who runs zerobeat.net has been having a clearout. The Zerobeat Elecraft forum has also gone, which is no great loss as it was never used, indeed I suggested to him some time ago that he may as well kill it. The wiki was edited by Don Rasmussen WB8YQJ who used to post on here regularly but hasn't posted since May 18. Possibly Don sold his K3 and was no longer interested, but it's a shame that it was pulled without giving anyone any notice as even if Thom no longer wished to host it, someone else may have volunteered to take it on. [Elecraft] K3-Wiki
I would think it appropriate for this community to upload the K3 manuals into some Wiki and edit them as a group, always keeping it current. It would be better if there was a way to preserve formatting with photos etc, so that all one would need to do is print it to have an up to date manual. I don't know if a Wiki can do this. [Elecraft] K3 Wiki oversight?, etc...
Leigh WA5ZNU wrote: In fact, I couldn't find a single page on the site that was editable, even though I have an account and was logged in. Is this perhaps an oversight? Dear Leigh, It's agreed that a typical wiki deals with dynamic information, it is constantly growing and changing. There are (rather strict) authoring standards and all kinds of people behind the scenes at the wiki to keep the content and correct and politically safe. The K3 wiki does not need to be this dynamic with respect to changes. Sure it would be more convenient, but the existing pages are basically static so they don't need to be changed rapidly. New pages -can- be added by anyone at any time. The inherent problem is the eHam types and the K3 wiki sysops simply don't have the time to follow them and clean up their mess. The view is there would be far more prank and troll postings than actual submissions of valuable K3 text, so it would become a daily chore for someone to chase down bogus pages and restore old content. That having been said, we invite everyone on this list to take part in the wiki. Register yourself (all you need is a username and a password), add a page, then submit it to any sysop listed on the main page to be linked into one of the existing (protected) pages. You can also copy the source from the existing page you want to change into your new revised page, then notify the sysops that you want a change. It's great to see the wiki evolving, one of the fun parts has been placing the comments and serial numbers from each new K3 owners and placing them as a chronology on the serial numbers page. Mostly this site is to promote K3 and Elecraft (Lisa Jones), so you won't find too much that's controversial on those pages. !!! In other words - tone counts. You will find all the information that is there to be "on topic" for K3. I use the wiki as my entry point for my browser to the elecraft digest list. Look under related links. Re: [Elecraft] K3 Wiki
Yes, and Twiki (if not Wiki) provide security controls for who can view/edit etc, so the owner of a topic can nominate who can edit - which is great for 'official' articles etc. Peer pressure is a wonderful thing and used for a limited site like this, would most likely work quite well enough. But, lets not start a huge long debate on this reflector - the idea has been put forward, maybe Elecraft will wish to follow it up. One of the problem with the Wiki is that anyone can post to it and anyone can change the posts of others... Not necessarily. The HPSDR wiki and AMSAT's Eaglepedia are two examples of ham-related wikis lwhich imit access for posting/editing, but provide unlimited access for viewing. 73, Lyle KK7P ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. I'm hesitant to start a Wiki, based on the lack of support for a web based froum. One of the problem with the Wiki is that anyone can post to it and anyone can change th posts of others...and so who would stand up and volunteer to ride herd to insure that all the information posted was correct. 73 - Thom K3HRN Zerobeat Ham Forums: www.zerobeat.net/smf www.tlchost.net/hosting/ Web Hosting as low as 3.49/month ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. YES - forget forums - run it all on Twiki - we run my entire team in Twiki, and although that team only consists of 6 of us, we service ~ 500 people. [Elecraft] K3 Wiki
One day I'd like to see a K3 wiki. Contributer experts could weigh in on individual topics such as: * DSP/AGC - suggested settings based on band, mode, signal strength. * Diversity receive - how to best use the subreceiver. N1EU stuff. * Noise Blanking - settings based on the noise source. * Transverter topics - how to hook up a Down East Microwave device, etc. * Bandscope and SoftRock - how to keep noise off both ends of the connection. New bandscope solutions. * Interfacing hardware from other manufacturers - Band Pass filters, Noise cancellers, digital. * RS232 Control and programs. * Contest configurations, software and hardware. * ESSB - and wide standard mode SSB, AM. * Binaural effects. * Many other topics that could be addressed starting from an introductory level up to advanced and specific cases. I'm not offering to host this but do see the value of having a common, user maintained K3 resource outside of the Elecraft list and outside of the www.elecraft.com K3 FAQ. Having one place to reference first, before going through megabytes of archives looking for that needle in a haystack would be a real time saver and might even take some K3 traffic off the reflector. ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list.
