Re: [Elecraft] K3 - Macbook Pro

2011-09-08 Thread Alan D. Wilcox
Mike,
Splitter cable? Do you mean the cable I built BEFORE getting the iMic?
It worked, but was more hassle than it was worth.
The double-ring plug is wired so:
Tip = left audio out from the MacBook Pro
1st ring = right out
2nd ring = common
Sleeve = mic input to the MBP

See http://wilcoxengineering.com/projects/amateur-projects/44-psk31-k2
under iMic setup. The Sys Pref | Sound is where you setup your
soundcard. When you plug in the iMic, it'll show up there and you can
set it up following the way I did it. The idea is to send system sounds
to the internal speakers and the fldigi or cocoaModem program outputs to
the iMic and then to the microphone input on K2/K3/whatever.

Like you, I don't care to have a lot of extra programs running just to
do something simple. I use the Mac because it's robust, reliable, and
doesn't need rebooting everyday! All I need is fldigi (using Snow
Leopard) with the iMic, and I'm on PSK (or a host of other modes) with
just two audio cables to the K2 or K2.

 I ordered an iMic.

Mike :

I use the SignalLink USB and it works well on my Macbook (no drivers to
install) as well as under WIN XP running on
the same machine under Parallels Desktop. I primarily run FlDigi for soundcard
modes on Mac OS, WIN XP and Linux.
The SignalLink USB uses an internal VOX circuit to key the rig so no USB to
serial adaptor is needed for keying.

If you need a serial port on your Mac for rig control, I have had nothing but
success with the following Startech USB to Serial Adaptor :

http://www.startech.com/Cards-Adapters/Serial-Cards-Adapters/USB-to-RS232-DB9-Serial-Adapter-Cable-Male-to-Male-Serial-Adapter-USB-to-Serial~ICUSB232

Generally any USB adaptor that uses the Prolific chipsets seems to work very
well on Mac OS or Linux.

Best of luck
