Re: [Elecraft] ELECRAFT K3-F P3-F & SP3.

2023-03-03 Thread rreynolds51
It’s a hard decision! I’ve been looking at YouTube and talking to people that
have both radios. Both are really good radios, as is the K3. I’ve been inactive
for a few months so getting back into and trying to figure out what I want to
do. I have a lot of classic radios I’ve used for years in the garage. LOL.
Getting close to pulling the cord however.

Thanks for the background on the thread.

Concur that at this price level no amount of due diligence is unreasonable.

Hope you go for it !

Checking bank balance here after taxes paid this year!

Tnx Julia and Dave;

I just thought it would be enlightening to hear whatever knocks “Rick” had in
the K4, and if he actually had first hand experience with one or was parroting
some of the negative spin floating around.

Ray was very convincing on his support of the K4, in any case!!

Good on ya’ Ray.

Hi Rat:

This is your response to what was probably a very interesting question with
comments from someone named Rick, apparently comparing your K4 to something
else.

I was curious as to your incoming from Rick.

Good luck wit the sale of your gear. Should go like hotcakes!

[Elecraft] ELECRAFT K3-F P3-F.

2023-03-02 Thread Ramon Batista
Hi Rick,

K4D Has No Comparison Rick, I Have The Complete Collection Of Elecraft From
K1 Through K4. By My Experience With K4 Since 6 Months Ago I Can Tell You
That Other Radios Can Have A Better Looking Waterfall And Scope, Fancy
Colors And Finishing, TX Equalizers With Infinite Frequency Ranges, But In
My Case What Matters Is Selectivity, Sensitivity, Dynamic Range, Fast And
Accurate RX-TX Switching, Especially For CW. I Can Get Ride Of The Other
Radios But K4D-K3S-K2100 Will Stay Here. Thank You, 73’s.

Re: [Elecraft] [Elecraft-K3] Interesting P3 Anomaly

2020-03-16 Thread Fred Jensen
It doesn't "necessarily" represent your transmitted signal, but in your
case, it seems that it is, or at least very close.  Likewise for me.
There are amplifier stages following the IF which can [and often do]
introduce distortion which won't show up if monitoring the IF frequency.

[Elecraft] For Sale: Elecraft K3 and P3 combo

2017-02-14 Thread PHILIP GRAITCER
I am downsizing to an apartment and I will not have room for a station. I am
selling a K3/P3 combination, along with microphone, interconnecting cables, and
manuals. Here are the details:

K3 SN 696, purchased from estate and built in 2/2007
Includes:
100 Watt amplifier
ATU
General Coverage Module
KXV3A Interface
KFL3A-500 500Hz, 5 pole filter (CW filter)
Elecraft MH2 microphone

ELECRAFT P3 (panadapter) SN 1772 purchased and built by me 12/2011

The K3 has been updated with suggested factory mods thru June 2013 and it met
or exceeded all factory standards at that time. (Elecraft letter stating this
available.)

The equipment is in use at my QTH now (Atlanta) and works perfectly as it has
since I purchased the transceiver in 2011. All equipment is in top condition,
nonsmoking environment, never in the field or mobile. Selling because I am
moving into an apartment. I would like to sell both of these together. Price
$2300.00 including packing and shipping in the US.

If you have AVERAGING on, it can cause the baseline of the display to
vary with the signals in the band.

Assuming that the P3 is only displaying what comes out of the K3 I am

Referring to the P3 menu's NB setting. That will spread very strong signals
on the P3 display.

As I remember, the P3 is un-affected by settings on the K3. Nice if you
use the RF gain control, etc.

As for the signals rising and falling in S units because of a stronger
signal, I am at a loss to explain at the moment.

[Elecraft] K3 and P3 cleaning - after action report

2016-08-01 Thread Bill Frantz
With all the good advice about cleaning my equipment, I finally
tackled the task. I first wiped the outside of the P3 with a
damp cloth to remove the external dust. I then took it to the
bench with its anti-static mat and wrist strap, and opened it
up. I couldn't find any dust inside, so I called it good and
closed it up again.

I did the same with the K3. It actually had some detectable dust
in the 100W amp section. I wiped that out with a damp rag and
called it good.

My conclusion is that the radios are quite well dust sealed,
even if there isn't a spec for this aspect of their performance.

Thanks to everyone who responded for your advice. I'm glad that
heroic measures were not necessary.

[Elecraft] KE7X "The Elecraft K3 and P3, 3rd. Edition -- Incorporating the KXV3B and KIO3B"

2015-10-30 Thread Cady, Fred
Hello all,

Just Released:

This book covers the details you need to effectively operate the Elecraft K3
and P3. If you are thinking about buying a used Elecraft K3, this book will
help you review the options that may be in your proposed purchase. Many options
are still available. Some are no longer available, usually due to components
being no longer available, and some can be replaced by newer K3S modules. We
briefly describe these and cover in more detail the popular KXV3B Transverter
and Receive Antenna Interface and the KIO3B I/O Interface while comparing them
with their K3 predecessors. If you all ready have a copy of "The Elecraft K3 -
Design, Configuration, and Operation, 2nd Edition", you might consider
purchasing "Upgrading the K3 with K3s Components". If you want all your
information in one place, this is the book for you. You might also consider
"The Elecraft KPA500 Amplifier and KAT500 Tuner" if you are going to add these
to your basic K3 and P3 station.

Printed, spiral coil bound copies are available from
www.lulu.com,<http://www.lulu.com> as is the PDF downloadable version. You can
also purchase the PDF version from KE7X.

See www.ke7x.com<http://www.ke7x.com> for full tables of contents and
Frequently Asked Questions and ordering information.

I am greatly interested in the KPA500. I would get you to ship it to

where the scratches are. Also is the KPAK3Aux cable available. Tnx.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 and P3 Utilities under Ubuntu

2014-04-03 Thread David Sanders W4DES
If you are running a 64-bit version of Ubuntu, you need the 32-bit libraries to
be installed since the utilities are compiled for 32-bit linux.

I’m not sure exactly how on Ubuntu, but for 64-bit debian you would need a
sequence of commands like this:
#dpkg —add-architecture i386
#apt-get update
#apt-get install ia32-libs
#apt-get install ia32-libs-gtk

Then you can run the k3util binary that is distributed by Elecraft.

[Elecraft] K3 and P3

Hi everyone.  Happy Thanksgiving to all!

I know I've seen this posted but can't pull it up..

How does one know if your K3 is capable of powering the P3?  Is there a
specific serial number or a specific rev level or something?

Thanks.

All K3s are capable of powering the P3 ... however, if you order
the P3SVGA it will come with a modification kit to increase the
current available from the K3 Switched +12V to power the P3SVGA.
See K3MDKIT here:

Re: [Elecraft] K3 and P3

2013-11-29 Thread Bill Frantz
The K3 will power the P3. Older K3s will need a mod to increase
power output from 1/2 amp to 1 amp if the P3 has a SVGA board.
The mod is included with the SVGA. See http://www.elecraft.com/order_form_parts.htm#K3%20Parts.

It works very well.

2013-09-18 Thread W0WFH Bill
Greeting all,  My K3/100 I picked up from KP4Y
Is just about all complete, I added the KDVR3 and KATU3
plus the FM filter.  I also have the XV144 transverter off
my K2 on the K3 and it works super!

An as of today I now have the P3 installed (waiting on the
SVGA board).

It all working the K3 is S/n 6061 and the P3 is 2817.

Now I will be looking for a KPA 500 amplifier and my K Line
will be complete.

From what I seen so far this is going to be a great station.
Been using an FT 920 for 15 years worked a lot of 6 meter DX
but now with this set up should be able to finish off DXCC
only need 5 more countries confirmed.

Hi Larry.

I use the TI-5 myself and have the K3/P3/KPA500. As Lyle does with his
RigExpert Plus, you just plug the TI-5 into the P3 serial port. It works
fine and I've had no issue updating firmware in either unit.

[Elecraft] K3 and P3

2011-12-05 Thread John Lemay
Hi all

Rick said

If you have a P3, unplug the RS-232 connection(s) and it will show you
your audio during transmit. That way, you don't have to trust your ears to
make the adjustments in timbre.

Request (Wayne/Eric): Can we make the P3 have this ability without
unplugging the I/O? It's VERY handy to watch the transmit audio.

I second that request.

In addition, I wonder if someone could publish a few screen shots on their
web page to indicate good and bad examples of setting up the K3 transmit
side ?

Many thanks

[Elecraft] [K3 and P3] KE7X Manual

2011-06-09 Thread Doug Turnbull

Friends,
Today I received a spiral bound copy of Fred Cady's (KE7X) The Elecraft K3
Design, Configuration and Operation. This is a 280 A4 page book describing
much of what anyone might like to know about the K3, P3 and their accessories.
Written by a retired Montana State University professor of EE in a thorough
manner using many diagrams, photos, block diagrams and schematics to illustrate
his points it should prove a useful aid to many of us. To me it is an easier
read than the K3 manual but then Fred had the manual before starting his book.
There are exercises and question in the book to help in learning, the
unmistakable signs of a good text book writer. You do not need to be macho
about this, many of us have some learning to do as regards our K3, I am a MSEE
and retired EE lecturer and have much to learn about my two K3s. Indeed, Fred
started writing this book in an effort to teach himself how to use our
beautiful little radio.

I have long been bothered in not having the more valuable operating tips
that appear on this forum easily accessible and while Fred's book does not
answer my problem, it sure seems helpful in this regard.

The book is thorough, even covering the configuration of the K3 when
initially purchased and would be useful for anyone prior to ordering their K3!
You would then have it to configure your K3 and when the K3 arrived there
would be a great set of tutorials on how to best make use of the radio. The
index is usually a difficulty for most writers but KE7X has done well for us in
this regard.

The book is independent in outlook and critical of the K3 in some
regards, the AGC and its handling of multiple signals in the pass band being an
example. This problem has recently been addressed on the forum but it is
interesting to see a professor critically questioning. I do not find this
issue covered adequately in the K3 manual though this is probably too much to
expect.

Fred does not want anyone to order his book just yet as he is doing a
final edit, my copy was ordered before this warning appeared on his web site.
You might want to check the following website out if you are interested,
http://www.ke7x.com/home/guide-to-the-k3 . I wanted the spiral bound version
as it is uses double sided quality printing and is always available for a quick
lookup. The cost is $35 and delivered to EI land it cost me €31.50. If you
want to print your own copy then a PDF version is available for $15 and
obviously there is no shipping.

I do not know Professor Cady (Fred KE7X to all hams) and am not sure if
he is in my log. The book seems useful and I wanted to let all of you to know
my first impressions. This is going to provide some fun in the next few days.

One final point, you do not need to be an engineer to get a great deal
of enjoyment and capability from a K3. Use default values and you have a
powerful tool. But like a fine instrument you can learn to better understand
the radio and how to make full use of the K3. This is a thinking man's radio
and Fred's text looks like it will help in learning to squeeze everything out
of the K3. After all was it Wayne the other day who admitted that one of his
employees helped him out of a problem using the very firmware he designed.
73 Doug EI2CN

Another solution, particular given your antenna restrictions, is to
connect to the Reverse Beacon Network's telnet node and then tell the
node to filter out all spots except those in your immediate area -
depending on where you are there is probably a Reverse Beacon nearby.
Try telnet.reversebeacon.net port 7000 or arcluster.reversebeacon.net

2011-04-07 Thread Mike AI6II
Thanks Pete, I have used filters on telnet nodes such as VE7CC, which does
read my filters. Unfortunately I cannot get the filtering to work within
HRD/LogV5. In any case, I am interested in finding out more about skimmers
as well, that is for copying code as well as spotting. There is the
possiblilty of going to SDR-IQ, but I can't figure out how to share one
antenna or how to keep the P3 online. I have read your other posts
concerning the K3 and SDR-IQ, but that was about using it instead of the P3
for a panadapter.

appreciated.

[Elecraft] K3 K3-P3 Stand (Riser)

2011-01-30 Thread John W2XS

While looking through the office supply catalog at work, I came across a
monitor stand that looked interesting. The width dimension (17) was about
the same as the width of the K3 and P3 together. So I bought one and set it
up at home. It seems to be a perfect fit for the K3 next to the P3
(including the feet on that side of the K3). I happen to have two small but
heavy (and good sounding) speakers that fit right under the stand. It has
allowed me to set up my vintage Drake equipment on the desk again.

It's the Kantek MS400, available on Amazon for about $22. I updated the
picture on QRZ dot com (or eHam dot net, which has a bigger picture).

Even though I love the Drakes, there are 9 boxes on the desk instead of 2
for the K3 (including power supply), and up to 14 knobs must be adjusted to
change bands, as opposed to two push-button presses. Using the vintage gear
these days is really a labor of love hi hi.

[Elecraft] K3/K144XV/P3 Signal Strength Readings

2011-01-17 Thread Geoffrey Downs
Having calibrated the K3 S meter and the P3 display with my XG2, I have 50
microvolts equal to S9 and -73dbm (whether or not the preamp is on).
However, on 2m (K144XV) there is a discrepancy between the K3 S
meter and the P3. I believe Alan has told us on the reflector that on 2m
S9 on the P3 is -93dbm in accordance with the IARU standard, but I also
believe that when using the K144XV the K3 S meter still regards S9 as -73dbm
which is different by a factor of 10.

Consequently K3 S meter readings are lower on 2m than they should be. Today,
for example, I had a 2m qso where the two stations I was working were about
S7 on the P3 but S3/4 on the K3 S meter. Is anything going on in the
Elecraft f/w academy to address this?

73 to all
