Re: [Elecraft] K4 Questions

2020-08-15 Thread Grant Youngman
I recall that Eric answered a question about that during one of the two 90
minute Q at the Expo.

I think he said it may be available at some point, but indicated it was
possibly over ethernet (?) rather than USB. But I could be mistaken, since I’m
lucky to remember my name unless I look at my driver’s license … if I can
remember where that is :-)

Whichever it is, it didn’t sound like it was going to be a first release
feature.

Span and center frequency are adjustable.  Fixed or tracking mode is
available.  Scrolling mode (to prevent VFO cursor from going off
screen) has different options, similar to P3:  full page, half page,

Next can the xvter IF out be used as the IF out on the K4D?

Probably it will work the same as a K3.

Or, is the I available for use o0n applications like CW Skimmer;
This requires a MME format.

[Elecraft] K4 Questions

2020-08-11 Thread Barry LaZar
I just saw the presentation Eric gave on the K4. It is really
impressive. However, I've never been able to get the answer to a few
questions. First, is the pan presentation fixed as to frequency span or
can the frequency span be adjusted; I typically use 25-50 KHz on CW or
less on data modes. Next can the xvter IF out be used as the IF out on
the K4D? Or, is the I available for use o0n applications like CW

I'm sure I will have additional questions over time. But, these are my
present burning questions. I now have a K3s and think it's a fantastic

Hi Eric,

Same time.

> To use diversity rx with the K4D, does the second antenna have to be
> connected to the RX ANT port, or a second ANT port, and do you need the
> internal ATU to get multiple ANT ports?

First, just to clarify for those not familiar with diversity: this requires
different antennas for the two receivers, which implies a K4D. (A basic K4 can
still receive on any two bands simultaneously, but only with a shared antenna.)

With no ATU installed, your choices for the second receiver's antenna would
include RX ANT IN 1 and RX ANT IN 2. You could even use these two RX antenna
jacks for the main and sub receivers, independent of the main antenna jack,
which would still be used for transmit.

With an ATU installed, you'd be able to specify any one of its three antennas
as an RX antenna. This can then be assigned to either or both receivers. So
this, too, is a diversity antenna option.

> Can the internal ATU be assigned to an ANT port, or is it always assigned to
> ANT 1?

The ATU has three antenna jacks (ANT 1/2/3). At a given time, one of these can
be assigned to the LC network and thus be available for transmit (and
optionally for either or both receivers). The two jacks not assigned to
transmit are then available for possible use as receive antennas (see above).

As an example, here's the control sequence you'd use to select ANT 1 for
transmit, RX ANT 2 for the main receiver, and RX ANT 2 for the sub receiver.

ANT (selects transmit antenna; tap once or twice to get to ANT1 icon)

RX ANT > RX1 (main receiver)

SUB ANT > RX2 (sub receiver)

The default for both receivers is to use the same antenna as the transmitter.
This is selected by:

RX ANT > =TX

SUB ANT > =TX

Antenna configurations are stored per-band. You can optionally assign names
(like "YAGI3", "LOOP", etc.) to antennas using an on-screen QWERTY keyboard.
These names will then show up in place of the main RX/sub RX/TX antenna icons.

[Elecraft] K4 questions!

2020-07-23 Thread eric norris via Elecraft
Within shipping groups, will the K4D be available as soon as the K4, or later?
To use diversity rx with the K4D, does the second antenna have to be connected
to the RX ANT port, or a second ANT port, and do you need the internal ATU to
get multiple ANT ports?  Can the internal ATU be assigned to an ANT port, or is
it always assigned to ANT 1?

Re: [Elecraft] K4 Questions

2019-06-06 Thread Doug Turnbull
Would switching out the superhet front end allow a wider bandwidth for FT8
in the event that narrower filters are used in the front end.

a) Direct-sampling passband is flatter than the flattest crystal filter,
with no ripple or group delay issues. Better sound on SSB, ESSB, AM, and FM,
and possibly lower error rate in some digital modes, DV, etc.

b) Direct sampling provides a wider bandwidth looking into the DSP,
allowing for some advanced noise reduction capabilities including new NR,
frequency-offset noise cancellation, etc. These features will be evolving
over time.

c) Turning off the superhet module will allow RX/TX operation near and at
the IF (8.215 MHz).

d) Current drain will be lower with the HDR module turned off.

Maybe. Someday. But I can't say for certain. Another possibility is a
"K4/0", i.e. a K4 with only a front panel and host interface module, but in
the same size chassis as a K4. Any K4, including a K4/0 or -mini, will be
able to control another one.

No data on this yet. But you should be able to turn off the panadapter
stream if/when you don't need it. Good idea.

[Elecraft] K4 Questions

2019-06-06 Thread n4cc

I have a couple questions regarding the K4 and K4HD - perhaps for
Wayne/Eric.

1. I understand that the K4HD will have a selectable feature that would
allow it to use either the direct sampling or the superhet front end. If I
had a K4HD, why would I ever want to switch from the better superhet front
end to SDR - assuming I already own all the filters?
2. Will there be a "K4 mini"? I know I could operate remotely from a
PC, etc. but would prefer the "real radio" feel with knobs, a plug in
paddle, etc. and having the panadapter screen in the mini would be a plus?
I use a K3 mini now but not with a P3.
3. My primary station is built as a remote station in FL in partnership
with Paul-W9AC. We use Verizon 4G LTE for internet and are limited to 30 GB
of data per month (without upcharge). How data intensive is the K4 with the
panadapter in remote operation versus the K3S -- assuming it would be
controlled with a K4 mini or another K4 to get the panadapter feature??
(Forgive me if I'm not asking the question correctly, but I think you'll
understand my intent.)

Thanks. 73, Greg-N4CC

[Elecraft] K4 Questions

2019-05-21 Thread Rick WA6NHC

Wayne,

What is the ultimate resolution available from the HDMI output?

I'm hoping for UHD (4K), that display would be beyond spectacular (and
I'd presume that the linux machine would manage that to take the load
off the K4 RF portion).

Well done for moving to HDMI, as monitors are sharper AND cheaper than
SVGA these days.  It could also allow a split screen (picture in
picture) on a capable TV or monitor for other things to be displayed at
the same time.

Is it a safe presumption that audio is routed through the RJ45 as well
so that no other wiring is required for remote?

Thank you, it all looks so promising while we wait for specifics.

[Elecraft] K4 questions

2019-05-16 Thread Dauer, Edward
Is it "modularized" as the K3 is, with dual receivers as an option? Filter
choices, or is all of that built in? General coverage option? Transverters?
100 or 10 watt amp?

I am assuming it's fully integrated with the KP1500, right? How about
compatible with the P3, in case someone wants to watch simultaneously the band
on one screen and whatever the K4 is doing on the other?

Is the iPad in Eric's hand a way to operate remote -- like, from far away?

What's the likely delivery time for current orders?

Yeah, I know it'll be on the Elecraft site tomorrow. I wanna know tonight!!

Ted, KN1CBR
