Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Questions
Thanks for all the great comments and suggestions about ordering a KX3. Of course I should have looked at the International frequency allocations before asking about the 4 meter transverter. Duh... I appreciate all the input. You confirmed most of my thoughts about what to put into the complete KX3 station and what to leave out. As expected, the experts on the list came through big time. Of course since posting my question I've exchanged a few e-mails with my colleague, W1ZR, and he has me thinking about a more basic K3, and adding some of my wish list add-ons later. There are obvious reasons for both choices, so I am evaluating with option works best for me. Decisions, decisions. 73, Larry Wolfgang, WR1B __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Questions
The 4 meter module is not usable in the USA.. the 2 meter gets you an all-mode 2 meter transverter. That plus an external amp gets you side band on 2 meters, cw and so on if you want more than 2 or 3 watts. 4 meters is in the middle of a VHF TV band here in the states, and the FCC has no plans to allow operations in that span, since there are active TV stations there. KK4QDZ - Now with Extra Class Priv's, and a tiny KX3 to enjoy them! I’m replacing a Kenwood TS-480HX (an outstanding device also) which I ran with an Ameritron ALS-600S 600-watt linear. With some balancing and shielding I will be able to run the KX3 + KXPA100 into the 600 watt linear. So, I have my super compact QRP radio that I can put in my back pack and sit on a lawn chair with a Buddy Pole on top of a mountain, or the high power base station on my desk at home with the mini-beam. Cake and eat it too. The KXP3 pan adapter for the KX3 arrives today — my weekend project. I’ll suggest the roofing filter especially for CW. Did not get an antenna tuner for either the KX3 or KXPA100, but might reconsider that later, since I have an auto-tuner for the big linear. Had no interest in using the KX3 on 2M and actually for the cost, you could probably find a very nice 2M rig. Assembly suggestion: they provide you with a lot of little teeny tiny screws. Get a cupcake pan or ice cube tray and separate all the parts and label them. Very difficult to tell a 5/32 screw from a 1/4. Tweezers help. And the customer support is extraordinary. Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Questions
Yes, the 2m module is a nice add-on; here at home, I use mine to drive transverters for 222, 902, 1296, 2304 and up. On 2m, with just 2w, I'm able to drive my SSPA to a full KW out (see the Oct 2012 QST article on the amp, or on the w6PQL web site). I do notice an instability on 2m, and hope Elecraft will address this when time permits. You won't notice this on SSB or FM, but in CW the carrier frequency jumps around a few Hz in a random fashion. You can also hear this on the KX3 LO signal in another receiver nearby tuned to the same frequency; it's barely detectable at 6m, and not at all on 10m and below, but it does make 2m CW sound less than pure. For me it was a great buy, and a replacement for older and less capable radios...I especially appreciate the ability to net transverter local oscillator offsets, and many of the other features. I also own the PX3, built the kit about a week ago - well worth the money. I can spot conversations and jump to them far faster than I'd have every imagined. I also used the built in signal generator in the PX3 with capacitive coupling (to lower input power) to a wire on a BNC to binding post connector I have to tune my filters (pretty sure I touched them when doing some work in my KX3). Not sure how stable the generator is, but so far, no ill-effects. > > I’ll suggest the roofing filter especially for CW. If you have relatively short feedlines so impedance mismatch won't rob you of much power, they make some really easy homebuilt antennas very usable. I have a EFHW antenna for 10/20/40m I built that I string up on a 40' Spiderbeam for portable use, and I easy 'get out there'. I also enjoy the ATU for my home operation, I have a low (5' above ground and very good at NVIS but not so great for DX) 187' loop around my backyard fence, soldered to a 450ohm window line I run into a 4:1 balun. I've yet to encounter a band or frequency I can't get 1.5 SWR or better on, and I've had MANY conversations all over the US and even into Canada, even with SSB. It's nowhere near optimal, but it's better to be on the radio than off it. I can hit most of the US, Canada, Mexico, and such on a regular basis with 20W on 20m. It's nice not needing an external ATU. If I had to make long feedline runes, I'd probably build an ATU near the antenna to minimize losses. > > Assembly suggestion: they provide you with a lot of little teeny tiny > screws. The only difficult part about building Elecraft kits I have run into is keeping the various screws in order so I was using the right screw for the right job. The manuals are excellent and detail what you should use, but having something to split them all up when you receive them (helps with inventory too!) makes assembly a cakewalk. I may have spent 30 minutes putting my PX3 together, most of that spent doing an inventory pre-build, finding my tiny-screwdriver box of phillips head attachments and clearing an area on the workbench to do so. Regarding the 2M option, with that option and a small yagi I borrowed from a friend he uses for satellite operations, I found 2 power line poles that were generating a lot of noise. You could do the same with a Baofeng, but I like having a radio that can fill in for a small hand-held if the need/desire arises. There's one hell of a difference in usability between my cheap Baofeng and my KX3, and I'm happy to have the functionality available in a device that makes sense to me/that I know well. Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Questions
Larry, I assembled a KX3 and it’s companion KXPA100 amp 3 weeks ago, and it is an outstanding combo. Hi Larry, 4m is used in many countries outside of the US, but there is no allocation for Amateur use here [and no real hope of this happening soon]. I'd suggest you buy the 2m transverter for use in the US. 73, matt W6NIA On Fri, 31 Oct 2014 15:07:18 +, you wrote: >I guess I am getting ready to put a KX3 order together. [Elecraft] KX3 questions
Greetings: I just subscribed although I've been an Elecraft customer for a long time (K1, K2 with all accessories, etc). I built a KX3 over the Christmas holidays and am just now getting a chance to use it. 2 questions. Is it normal to have noise that is "tuneable" especially across 40 meters? (that is is is frequency specific with the antenna DISCONNECTED)? It raises the s-meter one or 2 units when tuning.. This is NOT noise from the local area. Also, my unit seems to be "microphonic" in that if I lightly tap the case a LOT of crackling comes from the speaker. This seems to get much worse if I don't have the case screws tight. I am a very experienced builder and Motorola bench tech so am not new to RF. Any help would be appreciated. THANKS! [Elecraft] KX3 Questions
A happy Holiday season and a great and healthy new year to all. I just finished my fully loaded KX3. I am having several issues with it. Elecraft is closed today, so decided to ask other Elecraft users some questions. Here is the first: I am having three issues with my new KX3 serial number 3085. I am unable to align the filter. There is no change in amplitude when I try to find a null. I have attempted the alignment about 7 or 8 times. Second: The second issue is that I can't calibrate the radio. Using my Bird 43 and Bird dummy load, the calibration stops saying the SWR is 99/1, and stops. When I transmit into the same load all is fine with a 1/1 SWR. Third: The third problem is in LSB. In USB I hear signals and it sounds great. When I switch to LSB the radio goes silent. Nothing at all. Any ideas? 73AlanW1HYV __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Questions on tuning with T-1,etc.
Mike, Does your KX3 have the ATU option installed inside the case? Kit or factory? If you're using an external tuner (T-1) then I think you need the KX3 tuner set to Bypass Tuner. 73, BILL GERTH, W4RK Jefferson City, MO First Licensed 1954 CWOPS #459 KX3 (S/N 112) On Jul 18, 2012, at 3:29 PM, Michael E. Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Questions
I also had a situation where I was getting a string of dahs in the middle of transmission. At first I thought it may have been a sticky KXPD3 set too tight, but then the same thing happened using an external Begali paddle. The adhoc antenna feedline situation I was using was, let's just say, not ideal, and I was running a full 10W when the problem happened, so I then suspected RF was getting back into the radio. I replaced that jury-rigged antenna setup with some proper feedline and a balun, and have not had any problem since. 73, Matt VK2ACL On Jul 2, 2012 11:14 PM, "Sid Leben" wrote: > I received my KX3 a few days ago & we are getting acquainted. Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Questions
Had the same experiences with the keyer paddle KXPD3 ... a bit too much tension ( which is not adjustable except by surgery ) and the spacing is kinda tricky ( wound up having it wider than I like ). I also like a slightly wider paddle footprint ( someone suggested gluing/sticking something on them ). For FD, I didn't care for the way I sounded with it, so I reverted to the shack paddle, with great relief. I'm not exactly thrilled with it, considering the price, but I intend to hang onto it: for ultra portable, I can slow down. And for FD, it worked very well; contacts from all over, both coasts forgot it was a "QRP rig" ... plays "bigger". And I guess I'll have to take my IC7000 on my western trip ( yeah, and the manual too ... three years and I don't rememmer nuttin' ... can do a K3 or KX3 blindfolded ). Too bad the KX3 amp wasn't available Paul WB2ABD Date: Mon, 2 Jul 2012 10:12:02 -0500 From: Bill Gerth Subject: Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Questions To: Sid Leben Cc: "Elecraft@mailman.qth.net" Message-ID: <6bc2aa78-ddab-450e-8e16-e4b0434b2...@embarqmail.com> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII; format=flowed; delsp=yes Sid, Regarding your KXPD3, I have had similar experiences. I, too, prefer small gap spacing and also had the same experiences that you did regarding a string of dits or dahs. I may be imagining this, but I think it may have to do with thermal expansion / contraction of the metal components. I think I can correlate paddle performance at tight gap spacing with temperature changes. My shack tends to cool off overnight when my equipment is off and the HVAC gets ahead of the heat load. Then during the day it heats up. I should probably get out my feeler gauges and prove or disprove my theory. But, I now have a gap setting that works 24/7. It is a bit wider than I'd like, but I have adapted easily and I really like the KXPD3. When you're outdoors this afternoon, maybe you can detect the same thermal effects that I experienced. Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Questions
I have the same issues with my KXPD3. With maybe 100-125 CW qsos logged using the KX3 and KXPD3 I have now accepted the fact that I must compromise and use a more coarse paddle adjustment. I have also had issues with random dropping of the first "dah", which is further complicated when a "dah" is supposed to break up a string of "dits" as it does in iambic keying. I initially thought I had it fixed after cleaning the KXPD3 contacts with Deoxit and further adjustments, but the problem still surfaces occasionally. My sending becomes a bit embarrasing at times as a result. (not to imply that I have a "great" fist, which I do not) BUT, in my mind, the advantages of having the KXPD3 conveniently attached to the rig far outweigh these minor inconveniences. I bought my KX3 for portable operation, and am willing to accept the many compromises associated with that. Another minor KXPD3 issue The way the paddles themselves are machined there are sharp right angle margins adjacent to all of the finger and thumb contact areas. If those edges were rounded and smoothed moderately they would be much more comfortable to use .. In my hands at least. Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Questions
If you read the KX3 Errata sheet (should have been supplied with the radio) on the web site, you'll note that several functions described in the manual are not availble as yet. And "NR" is among those. And, I agree with you on the paddles. Neat, but I can't get them adjusted like I would normally adjust my HEXKEY, tight. It also seems that they have more travel now then a week or so ago when I last adjusted them. I have resisted the temptation to disassemble and make the spring tighter or find a way to replace it with magnets. Until I see inside, I can't really make the decision, but I'm really leaning toward using magnets to provide the 'feel'. I've done this with others including a "AZQRP Scorpion". ...bill nr4c On Mon, 2 Jul 2012 07:51:49 -0700, Sid Leben wrote: > I received my KX3 a few days ago & we are getting acquainted. > Similar to my K3, but not the same.. > I downloaded the newest Beta, 1.06. > As I understand it, there is some form of DSP installed. Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Questions
Sid, If you read the errata you will find that NR is not yet implemented. "some form of DSP installed" -- yes, the KX3 is most *all* DSP - all the modulation, demodulation and filtering is in DSP code (the "number soup" as some would say). 73, Don W3FPR On 7/2/2012 10:51 AM, Sid Leben wrote: > I received my KX3 a few days ago & we are getting acquainted. Hello Sid! > ...As I understand it, there is some form of DSP installed. When I invoke > "NR" the screen reads "tbd" I assume that more is to come, as there are no > levels to adjust as in the K3. The radio is entirely based on digital signal processing (DSP). I understand that many people mean "automotaic filtering of some sort" when they use the term DSP. Those features -- noise reduction and automatic notch -- are actively being worked on as I write this. > The AGC left at the default Threshold of 7, is not sufficient. I will try > lower levels to stop the overload from strong stations. Or turn the AF Gain down. What many people try to do is use the internal speaker and crank up the AF Gain. With a high AGC threshold, this means a strong signal will overload the audio chain. If the gain is set so that a very strong signal doe snot overload, then a high AGC setting may be appropriate. It all depends on the ambient acoustic environment, the "band noise" at the moment, the efficiency of the audio transducer (internal speaker, headphones, external amplified speaker(s), etc) and your hearing comfort level. In general, you want the AGC to cut in above the band noise -- how much above depends on a lot of things and is usually dominated by your personal preferences. I usually have the AGC Threshold in my KX3 set to 5. > I am trying to use the APF mode. A little complex, but it tends to ring when > peaked in mode II. The APF will ring a bit by design. It is mostly used for helping to copy weak (that is, near the noise level, might be S6!) CW signals at slow to moderate keying speeds. It is not the appropriate filter for fast CW, or for signals with reasonable S/N. The regular filtering (accessed by turning the PBT control) is appropriate for the latter cases. I see you've had good comments on the KXPD3. Enjoy your new radio, and thank you for your observations! 73, Lyle KK7P __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Questions
Yes, there is extensive DSP in this radio. However, the NR is not yet implemented. Check the user manual errata (KX3 Owner's Manual Errata Rev B4-1 - June 1, 2012) on the Elecraft web site for details on firmware enhancements still to come. For example, the NB, though implemented can only be set on or off right now - levels will be provided later - and some other features are also on the "to do" list. When planning to use APF, be sure to first turn on CWT, then tune the signal as close to the center of the indicator as is reasonably possible (it doesn't have to be exact, however), then SPOT the signal, then set a fairly narrow bandwidth, then turn on APF. Experiment with it! It is pretty cool! 72/73 de JP WF4Z On Mon, Jul 2, 2012 at 10:51 AM, Sid Leben wrote: > I received my KX3 a few days ago & we are getting acquainted. Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Questions
Sid, Regarding your KXPD3, I have had similar experiences. Good luck and stay cool! 73, BILL GERTH, W4RK Jefferson City, MO First Licensed 1954 CWOPS #459 KX3 (S/N 112) On Jul 2, 2012, at 9:51 AM, Sid Leben wrote: > I received my KX3 a few days ago & we are getting acquainted. > Similar to my K3, but not the same.. > I downloaded the newest Beta, 1.06. > As I understand it, there is some form of DSP installed. [Elecraft] KX3 Questions
I received my KX3 a few days ago & we are getting acquainted. Similar to my K3, but not the same.. I downloaded the newest Beta, 1.06. As I understand it, there is some form of DSP installed. When I invoke "NR" the screen reads "tbd" I assume that more is to come, as there are no levels to adjust as in the K3. The AGC left at the default Threshold of 7, is not sufficient. I will try lower levels to stop the overload from strong stations. I am trying to use the APF mode. A little complex, but it tends to ring when peaked in mode II. XPD3 paddle. Mechanically a very nice match to the rig. I prefer a tight (little movement ) paddle. I adjusted the paddles until constant contact & then backed off, then tightened. Still more movement then I like, but I can acclimate. Sometimes in the middle of a transmission, I would get a string of dits or dahs, generally happens when settings too tight. I have opened the settings more, inducing more travel, & I still get the "stuck" condition. I am wondering if this is a mechanical problem with the key, or a software pblm with the encoder circuit I will take it portable this afternoon & give it a workout. I would appreciate comments. I appreciate everyone's response. Got the word back from Elecraft that nothing is available at this point and it looks like sometime in the fall at the earliest before something will be available. Will have to do without for now and see what things look like in the fall. Ron, it's all mechanical assembly - no soldering required. Totally different than the K1 or Heathkits. 72/73 de Jim - AD6CW On 6/12/2012 8:27 PM, Ronald Nutter wrote: > Bill: > > Can you give me a rough idea of how long it will take to assemble ? > Want to make sure I will have enough time to put it together without > rushing. > I have built quite a few of the heathkit kits while they were in > business. Re: [Elecraft] KX3 questions
That's the beauty of buying an Elecraft kit, Ron. You start with the basic KX3 and add options as you feel that they're needed. Try that with the "Big Three." A new model is introduced, and suddenly your current transceiver has dropped in resale value. The necessary tools are noted in the "Tools Required for Assembly" section of the KX3 Assembly Manual: http://www.elecraft.com/manual/KX3%20Kit%20Assembly%20Manual-sm.pdf Depending on the timeframe of "the near future," Elecraft is quoting 90-120 days for delivery for KX3s ordered now. 72/73 de Jim - AD6CW On 6/12/2012 7:42 PM, Ronald Nutter wrote: > I am thinking about purchasing a KX3. Re: [Elecraft] KX3 questions
Well, I haven't rec'd my KX3 yet, but from what I've read, and some videos posted here, it should take about 2-3 hours from the time you open the box, assuming you are already set with an ESD matt and wrist strap. Go buy a new, good quality #1 and #0 Phillips screw-driver, have your multi-meter handy and a pair of nice needle-nosed pliers and you should be set. For more details, see the "KX3 Assembly Manual" on the website (elecraft.com 'Manuals and Downloads' 'KX3'. My KX3 is supposed to ship in the next few days, so I'm anxious to get started on mine. More details after I finish building. ...bill nr4c _ From: Ronald Nutter [mailto:ron.nut...@networkref.com] Sent: Tuesday, June 12, 2012 11:28 PM To: Bill Conkling Cc: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: Re: [Elecraft] KX3 questions Bill: Can you give me a rough idea of how long it will take to assemble ? Re: [Elecraft] KX3 questions
I've had a lot of fun with my "naked" K3. With the sunspots being cooperative, QRP is a lot of fun. I can upgrade power later. If I run into crowded bands, I can add filters, but I haven't had much problem with the antennas I am using. Probably the first "extra" I'll add is a P3. I think I would feel the same way if I had a KX3. If you can handle the ESD precautions and get delivery at the right time, building one in your hotel room sounds like a lot more fun than watching TV. Re: [Elecraft] KX3 questions
The KXPD3 (paddles), KXAT3 (antenna tuner) and KXFL3 (filters) are easy to add at any time. Nothing to disassemble for the KXAT3 or KXFL3 - you just open the KX3 as if you were going to install batteries and plug them in. A screw or two secures each one in its socket. Of course, the KXPD3 plugs in without opening the KX3. So there's no reason to wait before "jumping in". Of course, you'll need an antenna system that is decently matched to 50 ohms (or an external "tuner"). The filters provide additional help with crowded bands. The paddles are super-convenient and comfortable, but for CW you can use your favorite key. Oh, and I'm forgetting the MH3 microphone which offers a lot of portable operating convenience with important operating functions right on the mic's buttons. But you can certainly get started with just about any mic you have! 73, Ron AC7AC -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of Ronald Nutter Sent: Tuesday, June 12, 2012 7:43 PM To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: [Elecraft] KX3 questions I am thinking about purchasing a KX3.
