[Elecraft] OT: MFJ
To me MFJ is the Harbor Freight of ham radio. When you can't afford the very best, when you use the gear within (perhaps limited) spec and with a little TLC, it allows you to scratch an itch you could not otherwise afford. I am glad they're there. I love Elecraft and will fill my needs there when I can afford it.Ken ke4rgSent from my Sprint Samsung Galaxy S10+. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

[Elecraft] OT mfj 1786 loop antenna
Greetings, In my quest to find a low profile antenna, I've looked at a lot of possibilities. I was curious if anyone has and experience with the MFJ 1786 loop antenna. It looks like it has decent reviews on eham. I can deal with tuning it whenever I move the dial. I realize it's only rated to 150 so an amp is out of the question. My other option is going with the zero five flag pole which was mentioned in a previous thread. It looks like there's been great success with the AlexLoop. So I'm assuming the mfj loop would work well. But you know what they say about when one ASsumes hihi. Thanks and 73, Steve KS6PD __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] OT mfj 1786 loop antenna
I have an AlexLoop, I use it with my K2 and KX1 on field events and SOTA. It replaced a Buddipole. So far as I can tell, it works about as good as the BP did in any of its various configurations. It's a small magnetic loop, it performs pretty much as the theory says. It's not real effective on 40m [too small], and the tuning on 40m and 30m is pretty critical. Much better on 20m and up. Verticals tend to be noisier than horizontal antennas or magnetic loops, and the loop has the advantage that you can sometimes null a concentrated noise source. AlexLoop is QRP only. I've never used the MFJ but I would imagine it would perform similary. One caution: Even at QRP powers, some serious voltages show up in small loops. I sit below my AL so I can tune it and be somewhat out of its field. 73, Fred K6DGW - Northern California Contest Club - CU in the 2013 Cal QSO Party 5-6 Oct 2013 - www.cqp.org On 8/11/2013 9:39 AM, Stephen Selberg wrote: In my quest to find a low profile antenna, I've looked at a lot of possibilities. Re: [Elecraft] OT mfj 1786 loop antenna
Howdy, I have an MFJ-1788 Loop (40M - 15M Version of the MFJ-1786 Loop) that I use from the high rise apartment where we live in San Antonio, Texas. I have a South facing second story apartment balcony where my antennas are mounted. I use the MFJ loop on both my Elecraft KX3 and my Yaesu FT-817ND, and I have worked over 30 countries in less than 3 weeks running qrp powers of 1 watt to 2.5 watts after initially installing the loop on our apartment balcony. Two nights ago, I worked Amateur Radio Station IT9PKO in Italy (6135 miles from my QTH at San Antonio, Texas) using my Elecraft KX3 running 1 Watt output power using BPSK-31 mode on 20 Meters. I love the antenna, and it works flawlessly. I have mine horizontally mounted since the antenna is mounted more than 20 feet height above ground level. While I am sure the AlexLoop works well, I really like the MFJ Loop because of its Remote Control Tuning System, the power and swr meter on the remote control unit, and the capability to tune the antenna from within our residence. If you want to use your ham station in an apartment or on an apartment balcony with limited antenna options available to you, and want a remote control tuning capability, I don't think either model of the MFJ 3' loops can be beat. If you would like to see pictures of how I have my antenna mounted, you can view my setup on my web site http://www.roti.net/index.html . If you have any specific questions that might not be of interest to the mailing list, you are most welcome to contact me off list. 73, --Bill - K6IH- k...@arrl.net __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] OT mfj 1786 loop antenna
I have an MFJ-1788 Loop as well. I liked it pretty well. Got very close to the end of my WAS with it, though I started that in 1977. I also had my first ever JA contact on 40M with it. I put it on my garage roof with a Radio Shack rotator and it worked pretty darn well. I only replaced it because I missed 10M. -- Hisashi T Fujinaka - ht...@twofifty.com BSEE(6/86) + BSChem(3/95) + BAEnglish(8/95) + MSCS(8/03) + $2.50 = latte __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Hi all, I have received tons of E-mail and am in the process of responding to them. Have a little bit of patience. The MFJ-929 autotuner (two of them actually) are definitely sold. The remote antenna switch (two of them actually) most likely, pending funds. I can still use bids for the manual Versatuner (two of them, too). These are really nice multifunction boxes (tuner, cross needle SWR meter, antenna switch (2) and 100W dummy load). Re: [Elecraft] OT: MFJ Quality Issues
I've had issues lately with MFJ as well. Last year I ordered a Vectronics keyer kit. It works fine but, the cabinet was punched wrong. The holes didn't even match the kit. I called and was told they would send one. I waited two or three months and called again. This time I was told that they are waiting on aluminum. It's been almost a year now and I haven't received it. I also bought an antenna analyser a couple of years ago. It quit working after a month and I had to send it back for repair. It took about three months before I got it back and it wasn't even the one that I had sent them. Apparently I must have gotten someone else's. Over the last 25 years, I have had to send at least 90% of there stuff back for repair or repair it myself and I have bought quite a bit of equipment from them. I'm thinking how many times do I have to hit my head against the wall before I decide it hurts? I think I have decided now. It's too bad for them since we are in a depression and I don't see how they can really afford this kind of quality at this point. They dragged their heels on that one, claiming that they were waiting for a part from somewhere, and when the switch box arrived months later it had intermittent problems at the rig connector until I was able to reinforce the cable end where the connector clamp (allegedly) held in in place. [Elecraft] OT: MFJ Quality Issues
MFJ builds to the lowest common denominator, which is inverse to Elecraft. Each Elecraft is custom crafted, and as of yesterday, If there is a good concern, you can get the actual engineer on the horn - whatever it takes to make it right. I also purchased the 1026 Noise Canceller most recently, but they bend the cabinet sheet metal AFTER it's painted, then (MFJ's term) adjust the product with a green magic marker pen. Looks like crap, new out of the box. The same cost savings are applied elsewhere, I installed a small relay in the place of this little light bulb they have for RF circuit protection, and removed many decibels of attenuation. Where do all these cost savings go? Into QST, AES, etc magazine advertising, they have all the money in the world for that ;-) [Elecraft] OT: MFJ Quality Issues Erik N Basilier ebasilier at cox.net Fri Apr 3 14:04:03 EDT 2009 Previous message: [Elecraft] OT: MFJ Quality Issues Next message: [Elecraft] K2: KPA100 capacitor failures Messages sorted by: [ date ] [ thread ] [ subject ] [ author ] Here is my MFJ score: Over the years I have bought only 4 MFJ products brand new and fully assembled. [Elecraft] OT: MFJ Mobile Whip Antennas
Anyone familiar with the MFJ-2620T (20m) and/or 2640T (40m) base loaded mobile whip antennas? I'm considering getting the 20m (and maybe the 40m) vers, and wonder how they perform? Obviously wouldn't equal a full-wave Yagi up 50ft, but for portable (in my case, not mobile) use, if they were adequate, that's fine. They're relatively compact fairly inexpensive. I'm not interested in stringing wires or going tree-fising. I'd be using them w/my K2 and/or FT-817 and the Ecraft T1 tuner. Base loading is the MOST inefficient method of antenna loading. Yes, the antenna may well be resonant, but the current carrying portion of the antenna is confined with-in the coil. This is (one) of the draw-backs of the Yaesu ATAS series of HF mobile antennas. They're base-loaded. 73!
