Eric,

The thing that makes the KPA-1500 most attractive from my perspective, and
surely others, is it's supposed SO2R ability. What other amps on the
market offer similar capability other than the SPE Expert 1K-FA (which is
only 1kW)? A KPA-1500 is domestic, so eliminates the extra steps
involved in importing, et.al. compared to an SPE.

You don't have to worry about import and support on the SPE Expert, it is
taken care of by Bill at BB Tech http://www.spe-na.com/

Bill offers excellent support, so I wouldn't think twice. Note also that I
get significantly more than 1KW out on mine, even more than 1300 watts.

Checking product information I can see it is advertised as a 1000W PEP
amplifier. What happens with IMD at over 1300W?

Never had a problem. I was concerned as well, but informal tests showed no
problems. I haven't had a chance to use a spectrum analyzer on it yet. I
run it at the legal limit (750 watts), anyway ;-)

If I were Wayne and Eric, (which manifestly I am not), I would think not
twice but many times about investing design and production engineering
effort to a new product which would compete with many similar products
currently on the market for a very limited potential market which is
renowned for being very careful with money (putting it mildly) in a very
difficult economic environment which appears will get worse before it
gets better.

I also would think that Wayne and Eric will also be looking towards
more goodies for the K3, i.e. Panadapters, variable bandwidth roofing
filters, improving the already excellent firmware of the K3, etc.,
which however doesn't change my lust for a KPA1500 or KPA800. ;-)

Me neither, Toby.

This is really very simple:
The K3 delivery time is down to a mere 3 weeks, so it's time to trot out the
KPA's.
Giddy up!

Yes, more goodies for the K3...a REMOTE version of the KAT3 that can be
placed at (or near) the antenna feedpoint.

I think that Wayne, Eric and company need a break after the K3 settles down.
There are numerous good amplifier choices out there. I wonder if some think
that with the Elecraft name on their amplifier it will make the same
differences that the K3 does when compared to other transceivers?

RE: [Elecraft] RE: Any Amplifier News

2008-12-22 Thread N2TK
Dave,
Actually it may. After scrutinizing the amp 1.5 years ago at Dayton, I felt
the amp was worth buying when available.
 - The conservative rating.
 - Covered 160-6M
 - Instant ON
 - Somewhat lightweight due to the switching supply.
 - Hopefully remote head like the 2000A so I could mount it up near the
ceiling in my basement alongside the 2000A.

Many of us bought the K3 site-unseen based on Elecraft's reputation with the
K1 and K2. That turned out to be a very good decision. Some of us feel the
same about the amp, if/when available.

I am happy with my 2000A. It has given me very good service. And Acom
support has been first rate. I have a few spare sets of tubes so expect no
major issues. The couple of problems I did have with the amp were taken care
of quickly with excellent support from Acom. It is like Elecraft support. I
don't expect to be selling the 2000A in the near future, even if Elecraft
comes out with their amp.

And I just feel it is time for a well built solid-state amp.
But I am not holding my breath for Santa to put a KPA-1500 under the tree,
at least this year.

And besides Eric and Wayne are too young to take sleep breaks :-)

Merry Christmas everyone

N2TK, Tony

It would be nice to know the specs on port isolation and actual
band-switching delay (auto-tuning aside) in SO2R if a KPA-1500 becomes a
market reality, and whether it would be deemed contest grade with
frequent band switching, or one would be better off looking at two
separate amps. At the proposed price of the KPA-1500 in 2006 compared
to separates, eyes definitely gravitate toward the Elecraft amp.
