Hi Folks:

Conditions were a bit less than optimal tonight, but we did manage to

cleanly done as when Kevin calls it though.

[Elecraft] Re: ECN - dumb question

2007-02-05 Thread Albers
Kevin,

I also like the hail sign procedure. Tom heard mine while you were calling for
QNI, even tho my signal didn't reach you - next time you called he quickly
tapped out HYD AS and I tapped R, and knew to wait. Sure enuf he called me back
for the QSP.

Now the dumb question: do I respond to NE (since I have a 2 in my callsign) or
SE (since that's where I'm located)?

I'm guessing the latter - you probably want geographic locations, which would
also benefit folks with steerable antennas.

Ray,

What kind of ATU are you using to do this? I tried to send this directly to
you, but was "bounced".

Quite a bit of QRN here, too, Kevin.

Well, here I am again in NC - spent some time Fri and Sat working on antenna
setup at our no-outside-antennas NC second home. My attempt at loading the
aluminum ridge vent came to naught (more on that another time). Current
configuration is an ATU at one end of the attic with a balun and 25 ft of
fat wire stretched out inside the attic and 25 ft of very thin black wire -
very, very hard to see - stretched outside the attic.

Was anxious to try it on ECN but at 20m net time I was still paying the bill
for a little family supper at Elmo's diner.

Fired up the KX-1 in time for the 40m net - heard Tom (about 579) tell Kevin
(about 339) about the storms. Heard W0CZ about 589 w/QSB, VE3XL about 569,
K2VCO, K4JPN, all Q5 but weaker. Heard AB8KJ 589 but a bit off freq. Tried
calling a couple of times in hope someone would hear me and relay, but no
such luck. Hope to QNI next week when I'm back in VA with a real antenna!

About 14 degrees is right for Fresno to Iraq, and given the beamwidth of
practical antennas, should be fine for SF. The best propagation today
(assuming a flux of 100 and K of 2) appears to be on 14 MHz from about
0100Z to 0400Z. 18 MHz would be slightly better, but is less reliable.
My propagation program shows zilch at the 1900Z ECN time! The current
time zone offset to Iraq is +4, so that means from 0400-0800 Iraq time
would be best.
