[Elecraft] Top Posting is the official standard for the Elecraft List

2012-12-27 Thread Eric Swartz - WA6HHQ, Elecraft

Top posting is the official standard for this list, and its especially
important for those of us who also read our email on Android PDA phones,
iPads etc. Scrolling though a long thread before getting to the reply
text is time consuming on these devices.

Reading the response first, at the top, is a huge time saver, especially
when you have to read hundreds of emails daily as we do here. We really
appreciate your adherence to this.

Please also delete -all- footers and as much of the prior email text as
possible when replying to cut down on overall email size.

Re: [Elecraft] Top Posting is the official standard for the Elecraft list

2009-12-05 Thread David Woolley (E.L)
In that case, could I suggest you remove the requirement to trim replies
from your posting guidelines, as, in my experience, top posters will
never trim replies. It is the process of doing a proper interleaved
reply that leads to trimming. The real problem in the example that
triggered this thread was over-quoting and failing to interleave point
by point - pure bottom posting is also bad, although posting at the
bottom because everything else after the post has bee trimmed out, is
good. (Note that I read the digest on Thunderbird, and the lack of
trimming is very annoying, as I have to page through the back thread, as
well as the general increase in bandwidth and mail folder disk space.)

Are there really no PDA email clients that follow the ancient technique
of hiding lines beginning in ">"?

Bad practice, like not trimming replies, quoting after ones own
signature separator, and, in particular, not trimming signatures,
follows. I.E. this is formatted according to de facto top posting rules.

Having it run to another core in the horizontal plane allows the addition of a
small electric motor to act as a generator, which then could mean a whole new
contest CDTPG.

The CDTPG awards will be based on the longest amount of QSO time divided by
output power of the rig, then divided by the number of charge cylinders used
during the contest.

PETA exemption certificates are available for download.

[Elecraft] Top Posting OK

2005-10-04 Thread Eric Swartz - WA6HHQ, Elecraft

I'll add this to the Elecraft list guidelines: Top posting is -OK- on this list.

Like many of you, I also find that reading list postings is -much- faster if the
reply is posted above the copied text. It is much faster to scan messages this
way, avoiding scrolling down each one for the new text. (Of course if the amount
of copied text is reduced to 1-2 sentences it really doesn't matter where the
reply is, since it will be visible on the first screen :-)

Top posting also makes it much easier to read the list in digest mode, where all
of the daily messages are sent as a single email.

One variance that is also good practice: When answering a lot of questions in a
prior email, intersperse your replies after each question.

Let's not beat this one to death... I rears it's head at least once yearly with
many, many, opinions on both sides of the issue posted ;-)

message you reply to is important, it is also very important NOT
to reply _atop_ the original message but _below_ it.
It's much easier to read the message when proper quiting was used,
even if one didn't follow the thread closely.

The problem is that 'word processor' techniques
are prevalent in email these days, even if the
email is plain text. People just type and let
their local line wrap make it seem as if it's
formatted.
The worst comes when someone with a line wrap
in their sending software wraps a quote that was
properly formatted by the original sender.
There's nothing to do about advancing lowering
of standards and etiquette - it's just entropy.

OK guys and gals, this is getting very close to the neverending
discussion of which way the toilet paper should roll. The PS030805 post
is ingenious and creative, except it didn't format well for me, as you
can see below, which I've truncated for bandwidth (and sanity)
preservation. It may format even worse the second time around. Since
I'm sure it was tongue-in-cheek, I don't think Paul will mind.

ps030805 (aka noname, nocall),

You should 'standardize' the line length before you try side-posting. The
following message is very confusing.

The key to top posting is to reply in complete, logical sentences - anything
else produces garbage. For those who are not willing to construct responses
in complete sentences, I am not willing and able to to decipher
foreshortened comments (I find most of the bottom or in-line comments are
really just trivial stuff anyway). I ask how many posts have you seen with
no additional comment? I know I have seen at least 5 in the last 3 days -
one scrolls down on a comment in an interesting thread and finds nothing has
been added - what a waste of time and bandwidth - think of those who read
this reflector in digest form.
