[Elecraft] W2 Watt Meter firmware load?

2023-11-14 Thread Glenn Maclean
I recently put my K line station together K3S, KAT500, KPA500, P3. They are all
working great! I have added a brand new W2 watt meter. It came with version
1.0 firmware which from what I understand has not changed in many years and is
the latest version. I was testing my new W2 watt meter and it does not seem to
go into firmware load mode. I hold both the on button and sensor button while
powering the W2 on. I do not get the left blinking light as the manual states.
What am I doing wrong? I would like the firmware load mode to work in the event
I need to reload firmware. I am able to send commands to the W2 with my
computer.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thank you,
Glenn Maclean WA7SPY

Re: [Elecraft] W2 control wire length?

2023-03-20 Thread Victor Rosenthal 4X6GP
I don't know, but it would be easy to try with a coil of Ethernet cable
and some resistors.
The question is, why do you want to do this? You can easily compute the
real SWR and power at the feedpoint based on the reading in the station
and the transmission line loss from the cable specs.

thanks Michael.
Its the setup screen in W2 that wont open.
All other programs run without COM port issue.
I've tried 'compatibility' mode etc to no avail.

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft W2: Calibration question

2021-10-23 Thread Dan Brown

There’s an adjustment that can be done in the W2 software, not the utility, but
it just fine tunes what’s displayed by the computer, not the unit itself.

The software, IMO, could use a bit of modernization. Really wish it could be
open-sourced.

[Elecraft] W2 Sensors - calibration

2021-07-17 Thread Michael Walker
Hi All

At the moment, I am using a 200 watt HF W2 Sensor on VHF, and while I
realize it isn't far from perfect, it is perfectly good enough to tell me
if I have LOTS of watts out on a remote VHF station or no watts out.

I could calibrate it against a known good watt meter if need as that is
easy enough to do.

Or, could I convert it to a VHF 200 watt sensor as it looks like Elecraft
is not stocking them anymore based on trying to order a couple from the web
page.

The W2 is a great meter for remote operation and we actually use NodeRed on
a RPI to make it web readable.

Re: [Elecraft] W2

2021-06-08 Thread David Herring
Just to wrap up this question for the benefit of anyone else who is interested
or may search for this later…

Jack’s response prompted me to go back and take a second look at the schematics
for the couplers. Somehow I missed this the first time through, but it would
appear that the coupler will provide a short to ground for a DC bias voltage by
way of the secondary winding in T1.

So I’m going to take “no” for an answer here. ;-) I don’t think the HF
couplers will pass a DC bias voltage on through like I had hoped.

Can anyone say if the directional couplers for the W2 will pass a DC bias

Re: [Elecraft] W2 Issue

2021-05-20 Thread Jack Brindle via Elecraft
Bill;

R22 in the sensors is a sense resistor that tells the controller which sensor
is attached. It is a very low stress part that sees at most 5 volts at very low
current. R22 is different for each sensor - the values shown in the schematic
are not necessarily correct. Also, these are precision 1% resistors. With that
in mind, the values are:
2KW HF Sensor, R22 is a 2K ohm 1% SMT resistor.
200W HF Sensor, R22 is a 1KW 1% SMT resistor.
200W VHF Sensor, R22 is a 4.7K 1% SMT resistor.

We need to be careful what we might plug the sensor cable into. The standard
box would not stress the resistor to the degree that the resistor blew,
especially since that connector also has a ground attached as well. If it were
to be plugged into something like an ethernet adapter, I would expect the
sensor not to survive since those pins connect to entirely different signals
with different characteristics.

[Elecraft] W2 Issue

2021-05-20 Thread William Carpenter
My W2 wattmeter suddenly stopped working properly this morning along with
that dreaded smoke smell. The smell came from the 2KW sensor unit and upon
inspection R22 which is a 1K in the sense circuit is burned. Of course
it's surface mount but I think I can replace it OK. If not with another
surface mount I could possibly be able to mount a leaded resistor. I was
operating at 100 watts on 20 meters into a low SWR when this happened. Has
anyone else had this happen? What could have caused this? I have also
contacted Elecraft tech support about this but I know there are plenty of
experts on this forum too!

[Elecraft] W2 firmware

2021-04-17 Thread Claude Cousineau
Good day, I just purchased a w2 and followed the requested steps to install the
new firmware V1.0 , now I don't know what was install from factory because I
did not try it before loading v1.0 the power is about 10% low and swr is ok the
problem is that the alarm won't work , on power on I ear the relay cycle , I
made sure to enter an a in the utility program to get the answer a1 that tells
me that protraction is on, but when swr is higher then 5 to 1 alarm doesn't
trip the relay, I think it's a firmware issue! Does anyone have a previous
version for the w2 so that I can try it? Thanks for reading this 73

Re: [Elecraft] W2 wattmeter

2020-08-29 Thread Don Wilhelm

Joe,

The telling answer is in your statement "the radio has an internal ATU".
The radio is showing the SWR between the radio and the ATU.
The wattmeter is showing you the SWR after the ATU - in other words, the
SWR of the untuned antenna. So there may be nothing wrong.

Connect a dummy load to the wattmeter output and see what that reads -
should be 1.0.

[Elecraft] W2 SWR Alarm Function - How to set?

2020-07-02 Thread Andy Wood
Hi,

I have a W2 that has not been used in some time. I tried it today and all
functions seem to work ok except I cannot set the SWR alarm trip point.

According to the manual sending a "]" increases the trip point and a "["
lowers it. If I send "]" I get back "]00;". Same response if I send "[".

Hoping it is something simple that I have overlooked.

Re: [Elecraft] NEW! DIGITAL DISPLAY UNIT for ELECRAFT W2 WATT METER!

2020-05-26 Thread Keith Ennis via Elecraft
I've been asked about using the display unit for remote. Both the W2 and my
display unit use a straightforward rs232 port. I haven't done it yet, but
connecting 2 serial devices over the internet shouldn't be that hard.

[Elecraft] Elecraft W2 problem

2020-05-21 Thread mike stokes
Hi

I have an Elecraft W2 and a HF 2kW coupler which I have a couple of issues
with and appreciate any thoughts.

#1 - When pressing the Range button the range cycles from 20 W to Auto.
When on Auto it defaults to 20 W until transmitting. When in the 20W range
(or Auto) all of the SWR leds and the first power led light up.

#2 - When cycling through the ranges it skips the 2 W range.

I reversed the cable and reloaded the firmware with no issues,
Here is a link to a viedo showing what i am talking about.
https://1drv.ms/v/s!AtLmO2vBrPixk394MqxJ7BkwiV0w?e=2acerw
I appreciate any thoughts.

[Elecraft] W2 wattmerter not being recognised...

2020-03-14 Thread Bill Steffey
HI all,    I've just been wiring up my W2 wattmeters... and neither one
is recognised  by my win 10 computer.

The USB to 3.5mm plug Elecraft cord works fine with my K3...  on com28

But the W2 utility keeps sending ": " at 9600 bps

and will not provide the current software level. with 1.0 being
available.. ( maybe it is already at 1.0 ).

Then I want to run  The w2 interface software, but it says" "looking for
a W2" , and on the setup screen   " w2 not found on COM28"   && "unable
to open com 28"

I've verified the existance of com29 on device manager at 9600 &
I've rebooted... I've even read the W2 manual several times. I used to
have this working obn a different computer.  And can make it work on my
toughbook portable.  I 've tried different usb ports on the main machine
& com settings.

Ideas

[Elecraft] Elecraft W2 VHF/UHF Coupler use with 12VDC preamps

2019-04-21 Thread SVangen
It appears from the schematic that the Elecraft 144-450 MHz Directional
Coupler for the W2 SWR/Power Meter can safely pass DC voltage without any
direct interface nor danger of damage with the sensor electronics. My
question, has anyone confirmed that the VHF/UHF couplers are safe to use
with 12VDC in-line coax powered preamps (i.e. Icom AG-25/35 preamps with an
Icom IC-9100 Sat Transceiver).
Thank you,
Scott Vangen WB0QMZ

[Elecraft] W2 Connection Issues

2019-03-07 Thread Floyd Sense
Thanks to all who responded on this and all is now working properly.
Last evening, as I was pulling my hair out on this problem, the software
suddenly recognized the W2 and I was in business.  This was after I had
plugged/unplugged the W2 end of the cable dozens of times, reloaded
drivers, etc.  At the time, I thought maybe the problem was a dirty or
corroded plug or jack as the previous owner had never connected the W2
to his PC.  After reading these recent posts, it's also possible that I
powered down/up the W2 while the software was running.  At any rate, I
cleaned the plug with DeOxit and inserted it several times into the jack
and it's still working well.

I calibrated the W2 against my LP-100A and a setting of 498 on the W2
resulted in about 5 watts difference between the two at the 1,500 watt
level.  The difference at lower power levels  was a bit more or less
than that depending upon the level.

Re: [Elecraft] W2 connection issues

2019-03-07 Thread kq8m
Hi Jim,

If you figure it out please let us know. I have the same problem with a Win
7 machine. Everytime I start the software I must turn the W2 off then back
on for it to be detected even though the software sees the com port.

I have two W2 units that I use with different K3's and different W10
computers. One of them is reluctant to connect when I start up the W2
utility program. So I power the W2 off and back on with the utility program
active and it connects just fine. This is consistent behavior.

The other seems to be able to connect just fine. I have not spent any time
trying to figure out why one requires the off/on sequence but just live with
it.

There may something in the physical connection to the computer. i.e.
through a USB port, through a COM port, etc.

[Elecraft] W2 at 472kHz?

Has anyone tested a W2 at 472kHz?  Does it work?  I would be putting 50w
through it at that frequency using a transverter.

Re: [Elecraft] W2 Software

2018-10-28 Thread Joe
Now I'm confused. The web site says that the W2 Current Production
Firmware is V1.00, 4-12-2010.

When I look at my remote station using the W2 Interface Ver 1.12.1.18
W4SMT software, the bottom of the screen says "Connected to W2 ver 1.07"
 Why the difference?

Re: [Elecraft] W2 Software

2018-10-27 Thread kq8m
Thank you, David.

That is exactly what I am looking for. I am also thinking of writing a little
utility to display the data.

On that page is a link that is supposed to go to a mod for the W2 but it goes
to the serial interface commands file. I think Elecraft is having trouble with
their new design. Oh well, they will get it fixed.

You are right. The W2 Utility is used mainly for updating the firmware. I
believe you are looking for the W2 Interface software. The new web site doesn't

I would suggest you may have a cable issue to test first. Try reconnecting the

get help.

I wonder if anyone has seen this before.

I was chasing a problem with high SWR on my 2K HF probe where on the radio, the
antenna SWR reads 1.3:1 without the SWR probe installed and 2.9:1 with it
installed.

Yes, I have changed my RG214 jumper cables to a few others. I even replace the
probe with a double female couple and the SWR dropped down to what I expected
(about 1.3:1).

It is only on 6M that it has bad readings. This is at my remote base, and
as I right this, I should have tested on a dummy load, but that will have to
happen on my next trip.

So, as I asked before, anyone else see it fail only on 6m?

Re: [Elecraft] W2 wattmeter maximum Cat5 cable length

2018-07-10 Thread Jack Brindle via Elecraft
The cable is indeed not cat-5, but rather 8 individual wires that carry power
and ground one way (to the box) and analog sensor signals back. The twist
action in CAT-5 does not help here at all.
The things to watch for are signal loss due to resistance (shouldn’t be too
bad, depending on the wire and length), and RF pickup. The latter can lead to
bad and erratic readings.
The best advice is to keep the cable as short as possible.

2018-07-10 Thread Dick Green WC1M
Thanks. First real info I've gotten. I said Cat5 because the documentation
mentions it and I believe it says you can use a standard Ethernet cable.

I haven't taken a close look at the coupler circuitry. If it's like most remote
couplers I've seen, a too-long cable can cause a drop in the DC voltages that
carry the forward and reflected power signals. If the coupler does a conversion
to digital, then the cable length wouldn't be an issue. But that sounds pretty
fancy!

the standard cable is not Cat5, it's just a ribbon cable with RJ45's (I
think?) at each end.
Cat5 should work, though, and I'd be surprised if anything less than ~50ft+
would be an issue.

Re: [Elecraft] W2 wattmeter maximum Cat5 cable length

2018-07-10 Thread Jeff KC9WSJ
the standard cable is not Cat5, it's just a ribbon cable with RJ45's (I
think?) at each end.
Cat5 should work, though, and I'd be surprised if anything less than ~50ft+
would be an issue.

[Elecraft] W2 wattmeter maximum Cat5 cable length

2018-07-09 Thread Dick Green
The W2 wattmeter comes with a 5-foot Cat5 cable to connect the coupler to the
display unit. I need to use a longer cable, maybe 10-15 feet. I’ve searched the
reflector archives and web for any information about the max Cat5 cable length
but haven’t found any.

Does anyone know? Does the calibration routine in the W2 Utility compensate for
different cable lengths?

Seems like I had a power connector issue with mine once. Using a
different power cable took care of it.
One of the sensor lights should be lit.  If no sensors are connected the
S1 and S2 lights will alternately flash.

Re: [Elecraft] W2 Wattmeter 440 band accuracy?

2017-07-30 Thread Don Wilhelm

Michael,

In general, digital wattmeters have the same accuracy at any point on
the scale - unlike analog wattmeters for which the accuracy is stated as
a percentage of the full scale reading. On a 20 watt scale, a 25% error
would be up to 4 watts!

You might want to look at the specs for that 440 MHz transmitter as
well. If it 2.6 dB or so, getting 2.8 watts out for a 5 watt setting
may be what you can expect.

only 25% of full scale?

Trying to decide if the 2.8 Watts I am reading at 440 MHz on high power is

too low with a spec of 5 Watts output! If it is I can send it back to the
place of purchase to be checked and exchanged if necessary.

There seems to be no problem on the 2 Meter band at only 25 % of scale (5

Watts) readingjust on 440.

Re: [Elecraft] W2 Wattmeter 440 band accuracy?

2017-07-30 Thread Philip
That would depend on what kind of digital you are talking about. I don't
think the W2 reads instantaneous peak power. That usually takes special
circuitry to do . Hint: a digital slug for a bird 43 wattmeter costs way
more than the meter does. Analog meters will not read properly in a
digital environment. Try the radio in analog mode.

[Elecraft] W2 Wattmeter 440 band accuracy?

2017-07-30 Thread Michael via Elecraft
I just purchased a new Yaesu digital handheld and the power level on the
440 band is low (2.8 v 5.0 Watts), and was wondering if I can trust the W2's
accuracy? Another mobile higher powered transceiver also reads low on all
power levels on the 440 band.

I built the kit version of the W2 and have the VHF/UHF coupler

Why is there a +/- calibration button on the PC interface if the unit is
calibrated properly?

I can send my HT back to be tested and exchanged if it isn't making specs
but don't want to be told that
my wattmeter reading was inaccurate!

Is it possible to support more (say 4 total) with some kind of external

I have a K3 with three XV series transverters (144, 222, 432). Each

currently use separate external meters at the output of each amplifier. I'd

Re: [Elecraft] W2 watt meter- multiple sensors question

2017-07-22 Thread Don Wilhelm

Dave,

Certainly, just find a switch that can switch all the wires of an
Ethernet cable and you will be in business.
Of course, you would have to operate the switch manually unless you can
come up with some scheme to operate the switch when each transverter is
powered on.
