FW: [Elecraft] KPA800 @ $2.8k: count me in/out

2005-04-25 Thread Dan Barker
Who could ever need more than 640K (5 watts)?

Bill Gates

I figured on $3k+ if not more. The legal limit linear may be over $5k so I
would have to mortgage the house!

FW: [Elecraft] KPA800 @ $2.8k: count me in/out

2005-04-25 Thread Cyberia
I sent this by mistake to Stan (W5EWA) when I meant to send it to the group.

Sorry, Stan!

I seem to recall when I was a youngun and first getting interested in
amateur radio that everybody knew Collins was the Cadillac of rigs. I've
never owned or operated one, nor do I have any first-hand knowledge of their
quality or how much they cost.

I therefore obtained the following cost info off the web. It seems that the
Collins 75S-3C receiver cost about $750.00 in 1967. According to an
inflation calculator I found, that's the equivalent of about $4200.00 today,
and it's only a receiver.

Should it then be a big surprise that the IC-7800 with its two independent
receivers (and transmitter) costs $10K+?

...ducks as those who think it heretical to even compare the two begin to
foam at the mouth

My idea of spendy IS 1500 bucks. 10,500 bucks for a radio is pure
H S... I think the whole amateur market is getting out of hand. But
 that is just my opinion.

I thought this amp was going to be spendy. You are near the range where
my estimates begin. I figured on $3k+ if not more. The legal limit
linear may be over $5k so I would have to mortgage the house!
