Re: [Elecraft] K3 VFO A/B

2008-09-14 Thread Brian Alsop

Most of you are missing the issue.

The issue is that pressing SPLIT should do it all in one press.
The three past rigs I've owned from the big three all did this.

It isn't about AB once or twice.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 VFO A/B

Brian,

If that is the case, please tell us what specific transceivers you have
used.

Split allows on to transmit on the VFO B frequency (and mode?) while
non-split operation transmits on VFO A.

My K3 works like that, my K2 works like that, as do my Yaesu FT-900 and
FT-847.

I don't believe anything else is needed or desired - and I want it that way.

I do not want SPLIT to change the VFO B contents in any way. None of my
radios do that and I am quite happy with it that way.

What would *you* like the SPLIT button to do?

Joe,

In addition, there are several top operators who do *not* want the mode
and filters copied from VFO A to VFO B every time. That was why the
2-button tap was introduced.

So *no*, the AB should *not* necessarily copy mode and filters every
time it is tapped. If you want to copy everything, tap it twice - makes
perfect sense to me.

Rather than one group shove THEIR idea of how it SHOULD work down the other
group’s throat it would seem that Elecraft would be well advised to

Don,

In addition, there are several top operators who do *not*

Why do you insist on saying mode and filters? You are NOT
listening to what I'm saying ... and completely twisting what
I want to accomplish. The tap dance has its place, but mode
should be copied with frequency.

Filters, receive antenna, preamp, AGC, etc. are separate issue.
With the CW + SSB option to handle cross mode operation, mode
should be copied with frequency - *NOT* with the auxiliary
settings.

As is stands, there is no convenient way to set up the mode
of VFO B. If one uses a single tap, only the frequency is set.
With the double tap, ALL parameters (mode, filters, AGC, VOX,
RX Ant, etc.) are copied. It is counterproductive to reset
the ancillary settings just to set the VFO B frequency to
that of VFO A but mode is generally a function of frequency.
There must be a simple way to set up VFO B when it's on another
mode/frequency and the user needs to go split. B Set, mode,
mode, mode, B Set is neither simple nor intuitive. It is
too easy to forget or mess up in the heat of battle when trying
to set up for split.

If you believe that mode should be copied with the frequency, an appeal
to Wayne with that specific request might get some attention, but I
certainly cannot predict the outcome. Many minds have contributed
already to the production of the current operation, and your solution
while IMHO worth considering, was not the outcome of the previous exercise.

If you understood what I was saying, you were misrepresenting
it. The bottom line, MODE should be copied with FREQUENCY,
the other settings belong with either the second tap or left
for B set, setting B set procedure. It's frequency and
mode that matter when setting up for split. If the user has
a KRX3 and is doing dual or duplex, the second receiver will
likely have other settings (filter, RX Ant, AGC, etc.) that
should not be changed and they will need B set, setting,
B set in any case.

How can you copy mode without copying bandwidth? Maybe it would have to

otherwise not.

Tap AB twice. This was introduced several versions of the firmware
back. The folks who are operating cross mode do not want the mode
transferred, only the frequency, but other situations require that the
full contents are copied.
So tap once to transfer only the frequency and tap twice to transfer

can see instances where you want this behavior (like monitoring CW
with one VFO, SSB with the other), but for many of my purposes,
it's a real pain. Any way to change this behavior? Sorry if this
is RTFM.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 VFO A+B

2008-05-29 Thread Lyle Johnson

Whilst playing with, sorry exploring, my K3 this morning I have set something
that causes VFO B to track VFO A. Simply put as I tune VFO A both A B
frequencies change together. This only occurs on 40m, the band I was listening
to at the time. All other bands are normal.

Unfortunately I cannot remember what I did I have been searching the manual,
fruitlessly since lunch time.

HOLD SUB and UNLINK will appear in the display.

Lyle KK7P

RE: [Elecraft] K3 VFO A+B

2008-05-29 Thread Dick Dievendorff
You probably have linked the VFOs on 40 meters. This was described in the
firmware release notes for MCU 1.73:

VFO LINKING: Holding the SUB switch links/unlinks the two VFOs. When
linked,
VFO A is the master; turning it moves both VFOs the same amount. VFO B
can be
set to the same frequency by tapping AB, or it can be offset a fixed
amount from VFO A.
Setting them to the same frequency will permit diversity receive with
the subreceiver.
