Paul,

Refer to either the manual or K3 Utility "Force a Firmware Download" and
follow the instructions given there.
That condition is usually the result of a communications glitch during a
firmware download. Always wait until the firmware load completes before
touching the K3 or the computer.

Also connect the KXUSB directly from the PC to the KX3 without an

Just holding the power button for 10 seconds is not sufficient.
Go to the K3 Utility Help file, and click on Troubleshooting.
From there, select Forcing the K3 into Firmware Load Required Mode
Then follow ALL the instructions shown.

Don't panic! Disconnect the K3's APP power connector for a few minutes.
Then connect your true serial cable (not USB) and try again. It will
probably start loading again automatically when you open the K3 Utility.

The K3 does a nice job of protecting itself from update problems.

Also try forcing an MCU load (from page 45 of the owner's manual):

Forcing a Firmware Download
If you accidentally load an old or incompatible
firmware version and find the K3 unresponsive, do
the following: (1) unplug the K3 from the power
supply and wait 5 seconds; (2) plug the power
supply back in; (3) hold the K3's POWER switch
in; after about 10 seconds, you'll see the TX LED
flash (you'll also see MCU LD on the LCD); (4)
load the correct firmware version.

Re: [Elecraft] MCU LD

2009-09-06 Thread Doug Joyce
Hi Tom: After having built my K3 (s/n 2432) back in Jan, I agreed to build
one for a good friend last month and ran into somewhat the same problems.

The build went well, the unit received on the three bands from the XG2 at 1
microvolt and the K3 Utility would do the 5 and 50 watt TX Gain calibration
as well as the filter set up in both the main Rx and the KRX3 sub receiver.

The new K3 unit (s/n 3288) came with MCU Ver 3.14 and DSP Ver 2.16 installed
and I decided to do an firmware upgrade to 3.19 / 2.17. The K3 Utility
(Ver 1.2.8.10) is installed on a Dell D830 notebook and I'm using a native
serial port directly to the K3 - this configuration has been used to do
about 12 updates to my own K3 since I built it in Jan/09 all with no
problems. When the K3 Utility was used to check the Firmware in the new K3,
it confirmed the MCU, FPF and DSP1, but not DSP2. It acted as if the Aux
DSP board for the KRX3 wasn't there. I tried to upload a full new Firmware
vers set and it would load correctly the new MCU and FPF but would not load
the new version of either DSP1 or DSP2. At the end of the load attempt the
new MCU and FPF would remain but it would revert back to the original DSP1
Ver 2.16.

I contacted K3Support and had prompt replies from both Dale and Gary and we
tried various things. After checking and rechecking the connectors between
the RF board and the Front Panel board, as well as the connectors between
the DSP boards and the Front Panel board they asked me to measure the
voltage at U1 pin 8 on the KIO3 board. It needs to be at least - 5 V DC.
Mine was ok so then they sent me replacement Main and Aux DSP boards to
try. Unfortunately the results were the same with the new Main DSP board.

At this point Dale asked that I return the K3 to Aptos, which I did. It's
there now and scheduled to be checked out Tues or Wed of this week.

Good luck in getting yours fixed. I'll update you once I find out anything
further with this one.

Be very sure of the cable connection and COM port selection. Use the Windows

The K3 Utility should find the radio when you test communications from the
ports tab. The expected speed is 38,400 and it should give you the warning
dialog that says that the K3 Utility is waiting for MCU firmware.

If you can't get that far, you can't load firmware. It could be cable, PC,

Run REGEDIT. Look for

Re: [Elecraft] MCU LD and K3 Utility

2009-07-10 Thread Dick Dievendorff
The registry key is HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Elecraft\K3 Utility. Too
much Microsoft going on here today!

If you can, would you describe blew up better for me (a private e-mail
would be fine). I'd like to determine what happened and fix it, if I can.

The K3 Utility retains its information, as Vic described, in the Windows
Registry. Start Regedit from the Windows start menu run box, and then
navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Elecraft\K3 Utility. You
may delete the entire key and all the named values, as the K3 Utility
creates this key with default values on each startup if it's not already
there. The COM port name is part of that information.

Subject: [Elecraft] MCU LD and K3 Utility

Things are really balled up. I tried to upload the latest firmware but as I
was checking to see which serial port was connected to the computer, the K3
Utility blew up and in spite of my best efforts to uninstall and reinstall,
when I launch it, it tried to connect to the K3 on a port that doesn't exist
and just hangs and crashes. I've rebooted, looked for a .ini file that
might be referenced for that bogus port, but I can't find it.

This is on a windows machine running XP with all the latest updates.

Of course, the K3 is hung up in MCU LD mode and since I can't talk to it,
just sits there. I've powered down for an hour or more and tried but to no
avail.

I am hoping to be active in IARU so this is the last thing I need right now.

HELP Please!

Pete, W1RM

Re: [Elecraft] MCU LD and K3 Utility

2009-07-10 Thread Ron D'Eau Claire
Running the utility trying to access an invalid port should not cause any
problems at all, except that you won't be able to communicate with the K3.
And invalid or missing port should not cause it to hang in any way.

The first step is to load the Utility with *nothing* connected between the
PC and K3. It should run normally except that it can't talk to the K3, so
you won't get any report on current firmware, etc. You'll see ??? on the
Utility screen in those places.

You didn't describe your best efforts to uninstall and reinstall or what
computer/OS you're using, but if you're running Windows that should include
removing the program using the install/uninstall utility in the Control
Panel, then rebooting the computer *before* trying to install the new
Utility. Then, of course you download the utility program again from
Elecraft rather than trying to install a potentially-corrupted version
already on your HD.

I may not have the latest K3 Utility, but the version I have and all the
earlier ones offered a way to choose the port from the screens. Click on the
PORT tab. If a list of ports isn't shown in the drop-down window, click
REFRESH PORT LIST.

Normally, if you're not sure which port works, you'd first be sure you have
the K3 connected to the PC and turned on, then click on TEST COMMUNICATIONS.
If that fails then you'd try a different port.

In your case, the K3 is hung so it may not respond to a TEST
COMMUNICATIONS query. In that case you need to force an MCU load as
described on page of the Owner's Manual (Rev D). Since you don't know which
port is correct, you may need to do that trying different ports until it
works.

Hi Pete,

I was waiting to see if K6KR or someone more knowledgeable than I was
around, but I guess
not, so here goes.

Run REGEDIT. Look for

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Elecraft\K3 Utility

That's where the port (and other) information is kept.

I hope this helps.

2009-07-10 Thread Ron D'Eau Claire
Oops. Dick's and my e-mails crossed in cyberspace. He's the programmer and
Utility expert. Like Vic I was responding only because no one else seemed to
have been around (yet).

My suggestions stand (and I apologize, I see now you did say you had Xp) but
Dick is in the best position to lead through to the solution.

RE: [Elecraft] MCU LD

2008-09-23 Thread Dick Dievendorff
Don't attempt to load firmware into your K3 through a microHAM device. Use
a USB to Serial Adapter or RS-232 cable that sends exactly what is sent by
the K3 Utility.

Some users have sometimes succeeded by changing the microHAM Router to a
radio type none before loading K3 firmware, but sometimes (depending on
the microHAM router version) that doesn't work either.

   OK,
I tried to load new firmware to the K3, not using the USB-serial
cable, but thru the micro keyer interface which is normally connected
to the K3. At first my PC 'sees' the K3 but during upload something
went wrong and now I have a K3 displaying MCU LD and a blinking TX
   LED.
   Anyone has a lead here?

RE: [Elecraft] MCU LD

2008-09-23 Thread Joe Subich, W4TV

From the microKEYER Manual:

If your radio includes upgradeable firmware,
DO NOT perform any upgrade through microKEYER.

That said, with any microHAM interface you must set the radio
type to None (Ports | CAT | Set), check the Disable router
queries box, check both Forward autoinformation to CAT port
boxes, and set the 2nd CAT port to None before attempting
an firmware update.

After all of that you still need to keep a real serial port
or a generic USB to RS-232 adapter for emergencies.

You need to set the radio selection in Router to none and I also turned off
polling
just in case.

Do that and then upload the firmware again with the utility.
