Re: [Elecraft] New KX2 - what am I doing wrong?

2020-11-23 Thread Walter Underwood
For the AM broadcast band, this is normal. Here is a 2016 post from Wayne, N6KR
about
using the KX2 for SWL. The reduced sensitivity is to reduce intermod in the PIN
diodes used
for T/R switching, if I remember correctly.

Also, the KX3 and KX2 are designed to be used with the preamp for normal
operation.

=
By the way, sensitivity of the KX2 is excellent for SWL segments between the
ham bands. The sensitivity does fall off pretty rapidly below about 3 MHz
because the KX2 was designed for 80-10 m and doesn't have filters specifically
for 3 MHz or lower. You can still tune down to as low as 500 kHz, but you'll
only be able to copy very strong signals below the 160 meter band.

Re: [Elecraft] New KX2 - what am I doing wrong?

2020-11-23 Thread Bill Frantz
I will add, the Elecraft tuners can tune almost anything. When
you do a tune (Don's last step below), if the relays click for a
long time before settling into a not-super-good solution, that
is a symptom of no antenna, or a short circuit in place of an
antenna. If you are on the same band as the setting on the AX1,
tuning should be fairly quick.

The AX1 does not work inside my house unless I take it near a window.

So take a look at your situation - take the KX2 outside with
the AX1 and a trailing counterpoise wire to see if you can hear
any signals.

Make sure the switch on the AX1 is set to the band you are listening to.
Do a TUNE to set the KX2 ATU to the frequency of interest.

Re: [Elecraft] New KX2 - what am I doing wrong?

2020-11-23 Thread Doug Daniels
Have you only tried the AX1 or have you tried the BNC binding post with two
wires connected to it? I've tested my KX2 by painter's taping the antenna
wire to my ceiling and running the counterpoise along the floor. If that
works, you know it's the AX1 and not the rig. CQ WW CW is this weekend,
there will be people wall to wall on the bands, good time for testing.

2020-11-23 Thread Philip Cochran
Yes, I have a counterpoise attached. I’m in my home office. The counterpoise
just lies on the floor. I do not (yet) have an external antenna. My concern
is that I hear nothing at all on any band at any time. It’s as if there is no
antenna or a broken connection internally. My experience years ago was that I
could regularly hear something on at least some bands.

The AX1 is not much of an antenna without it.

Have a look at http://www.dl2rum.de/rumsoft/Elecraft.html

Re: [Elecraft] New KX2 beta firmware available with built-in CW/Data logging function

2017-08-06 Thread gm0...@gmail.com
Wayne,

I have had good success with the KX2 logging function for CW SOTA. Works
well and quite easy to review and transfer using the LG; command in KX2
Utility.

The only issue I have is storage, even using memory for CQs it's full after
50 of my short SOTA exchanges. Is there any way storage could be doubled, or
even 3K rather than 2K?

If 2K is all that is available, perhaps the Band, Mode and time could just
be embedded into the main stream like <0951> rather than having using half
of the memory with its own stream?

Here is the top of my latest log, not much surplus information information
in there

Re: [Elecraft] New KX2 beta firmware available with built-in CW/Data logging function

2017-06-18 Thread John Oppenheimer
Hi Wayne,

Testing the new logging feature in 2.77. A couple of suggestions:

When dumping the log using LG; can the dump stop after dumping the last
valid character, rather then a long string of "---" ?

Can the memory keyer operations be logged. Maybe just a M# or some other
character string which can be identified as a memory keyer with number
operation. Maybe an "R" for repeat.

Would the KX3 logging feature integrate with the PX3? I have found the PX3
USB keyboard interface very usable for digital operation, but logging is an
issue. Dumping the log later in some standard format would also be useful.

2017-05-18 Thread Adrian Helwig via Elecraft
Hi Wayne,
fantastic information! I think last Year during HAM Radio in Germany I was
discussing this with Eric and there You go :)I'm also interested in having
this on KX3 even if since I have KX2 the KX3 is more station transceiver it
would really simplify logging process for occasional QSOs. And with PX3 You
also have nice way to present the information.
Maybe You will some time implement also automatic logging features like Ulrich,
N2DE is doing with his CW Machine (http://www.i2rtf.com/files/CWMachine.pdf).
See page 57... only an idea :)
many thanks and regards from Germany

Logging of casual QSOs can be inconvenient when you're using the KX2 while
hiking. You might be taking a break at a scenic overlook, using the rig like an
HT, with one hand holding the rig and the other sending with the attached
paddle. (This is in fact my favorite style of operation.)

For times like these, we’re adding an automatic logging feature to the KX2.
When MENU:LOGBOOK is set to ON, the KX2 will record the last 2048 characters of
your outgoing CW, PSK31/63, or RTTY text. The only requirement is that you use
the rig's internal keyer, with either an attached paddle or an external one.

2048 characters is enough for 50 to 100 contest-style QSOs, or about 5 to 10
casual, bare-bones QSOs. You can turn logging on/off easily by assigning the
LOGBOOK menu entry to a programmable function (PF1-PF4). You might want to turn
it on when starting a QSO, then turn it back off once you’ve sent the other
station’s callsign, RST, etc.

To view the logged text, there will be a LOG display mode, accessed using the
DISP switch. While in this mode, VFO A can be used to scroll forwards and
backwards through the text. This allows you to review contacts you’ve made,
perhaps sometime in the future when you have time to update a paper or computer
log. Text can be erased by holding CLR while in LOG display mode. Transmitting
exits LOG display mode immediately.

The logged text includes your band and mode changes (e.g. *14.0 CW*). Also, any
time you're transmitting, a time stamp is generated once per minute. The time
stamps don’t appear in the text itself. Instead, they're shown on VFO A as you
scroll, e.g.:

    LOG 0030

The KXIO2 option module includes a real-time-clock. If a KXIO2 is installed,
time stamps will reflect the actual 24-hour UTC time. Otherwise time stamps
will reflect the relative time since the radio was turned on, which starts at
00:00.

Of course there are limitations to this logging method. But as long as you send
each station’s callsign at least once during a QSO, you’ll have a record of it,
along with the band, mode, and time. You could log additional QSO information,
if desired, by continuing to transmit; power should be turned down to zero in
this case.

This feature is likely to be available shortly after we get back from Dayton.
We hope to add this to the KX3 as well, if there’s enough interest.

Hi Wayne,

you are a genius! And it is better implemented than I thought. Great: no
additional gear needed. And of course it would be a help for the Kx3.

So I will order the clock for the Kx2. I didn't do it for I thought that
this space would be used for an I/O Board connection to the forthcoming Px2.

Thanks and all the best

Re: [Elecraft] New KX2 firmware with 4 programmable functions and home/field ATU settings

2017-04-16 Thread Irma & Linas(LY2H)
Thanks Wayne!
Pf1-Pf4 in the rev.2.75 works just great and makes my mobile operations so
much easier! I have assigned Pf1 to VOX, Pf2 to XIT, Pf3 to BKLIGHT, Pf4 to
DUAL RX ( that's more for fixed rather than mobile use).
I have yet to discover the sense of having two ATU Data Sets. Theoretically
it lets you to skip the tuning procedure each time you swap the known
antennas. But practically what matters is how many buttons you need to push
to get the antenna tuned. So, with two ATU sets you have to push at least 3
buttons ( go to menu, choose the set, go back to general display) in order
to get the antenna right. But for ordinary tuning procedure you only need
to push the ATU button once and the antenna ( any antenna) gets tuned in a
second! :) . And last but not least, even the same antenna may need
different tuning depending on the physical condition like snow, rain etc.

Anyway, thanks for a quick reactions to the elecrafters community ideas!
Happy Easter everybody!

Re: [Elecraft] New KX2 firmware with 4 programmable functions; need testers

2017-04-09 Thread Irma & Linas(LY2H)
Good news and thanks!
Looking fwd for this great improvement to be download-redy for the rest of
us.
I am a new (up to 2 months) KX2 user so the first things I found myself
missing is more Pfn buttons, at least 2. Now there going to be 4 of them!
So my first set would be PF1 =VOX, PF2= XIT, PF3=BKLIGHT, PF4=PS. Using the
radio car mobile a lot I already use the existing Pfn for the VOX in CW
mode, and the XIT is the second mostly needed. I will finaly decide on the
last two after some more time of variety usage.

I already use ANT1 and ANT2 for my 2 primary antennas. But if I connect a

then I've lost the settings for those bands for one of my primary antennas

Or have I misunderstood something?

Re: [Elecraft] New KX2 No Transmit

2016-07-03 Thread George King

Hi Guy,

Small wire in center pin connector - no change. No burr on the
connector. Connection feels normal - not too hard or too easy. Center
pin receptacle not spread. 50 ohm connector.

I did make a test lead with a BNC female connector on one end and the 2
pin Molex on the other and hooked the antenna up through this test lead
- same problem.

Thanks for trying to help. It's got to be an antenna connection problem
somewhere. Receive is good - good audio.

the cable BNC pin is not making contact with the jack's center pin
receptacle.

See if there is a burr on the outside of the BNC jack barrel that
prevents being able to shove the BNC all the way home.

Is the twist motion at the end of hooking up reasonably easy? It
shouldn't be hard if it's shoved all the way home.

See if the center pin receptacle in the BNC jack seems "spread apart".
There have been poor quality BNC plugs with oversized pins which
spread apart the center pin receptacles in BNC jacks and cause
problems later.

Hardware is not always good. I once had to deal with a Type F
connector that lacked threads to grab the threads on the jack's
barrel.

The BNC jack can be bad, or a cold solder joint to the circuit board,
etc, etc. It just sounds like BNC problems.

You wouldn't be using 75 ohm BNC plugs would you? I remember something
about 75 ohm BNC hardware causing problems.

I checked the connector from the ATU to the RF board and it seems to be

result. I made a jumper cable with a BNC connect on it and connected it to
the ATU bypassing the installed BNC connector - same result.

Re: [Elecraft] New KX2 No Transmit

2016-07-03 Thread Matt Zilmer

Hi George,

You should check the two RF cables to make sure they're seated. There is
one cable from the ATU to the RF board (two-pin connector at the RF
board), and another from the BNC socket to the ATU. Both of these need
to be seated in order for the KX2 to work. The 25.4:1 SWR indication
usually means the BNC to ATU cable isn't seated, but I would check both.

I just received my KX2 and really like it. I have the ATU and battery
installed. Receive works fine, but I cannot transmit. When I press
PTT I get several beeps and in some cases the radio shuts off.
Sometimes I get a Hi CUR message. Here is some data:

7.213 MHz,Voltage 11.7, Power set at 8 watts. When I press ATU
to tune the tuner works hard and displays 25.4 - 1 while trying to
tune and never changes. Is this telling me the SWR is 25.4:1? The
antenna SWR checked at the BNC connector on the antenna at the radio
with an MFJ 259B is 1.3:1

7.285 MHz, Voltage 11.7, Power 8 watts, SWR checked with MFJ 259B
is 2.0:1. Same result when I press ATU.

When I bypass the ATU I still get the same result except that I do not
see the 25.4 - 1 display.

Also, same result on all other bands. I installed the side panels
before I tried to transmit. I thought maybe I had a bad antenna
connection. A check with an ohm meter shows a good connection between
the BNC connector and the antenna connection on the ATU board.

I checked the connector from the ATU to the RF board and it seems to
be mated properly. I tried transmitting into a 50 ohm dummy load with
the same result. I made a jumper cable with a BNC connect on it and
connected it to the ATU bypassing the installed BNC connector - same
result.

SN is 463, just installed firmware 2.66. Did not try to transmit
before upgrading to 2.66 or installing the side panels. Seems to me I
have a bad antenna connection somewhere. Does this make sense?

Any help will be appreciated.

If you'd like to try the audio-CW interface, set MENU:SW TONE to one of
the CODE settings. Upon exiting the menu, your radio will now have CW
feedback on *almost* all of the switch and knob functions. It's not
perfect, but it's the minimal subset that would allow a blind op to use
the radio.

Also attached is the document that describes the radio and its Morse UI

Not sure what you mean by "rugged". It's a very similar case to the KX3,
just smaller. Opens clamshell-like just like the KX3 only with two
thumbscrews instead of four. Not waterproof, but like the KX3 its pretty
well "shockproof" when packed with camping gear or sitting on a rock for an
operating desk somewhere.

Re: [Elecraft] New KX2?

2016-05-19 Thread Walter Underwood
There is some sort of myth about the KX3 not being rugged. It was designed for
trail use. With around 10,000 sold, I haven’t heard any reports of problems
with ruggedness.

My KX3 has fallen hard enough to bend the BNC connector and it works fine.

I would expect the KX2 to be slightly more rugged because the boards are
smaller. That’s about it.

Of course, the SideKX panels provide extra protection for the knobs. That’s
handy.

Guess if it is unveiled at Dayton - more excitement!

Quick look-over and doesn't appear to replace my KX3 which has more
to offer me. I don't do SOTA so don't need super-small. Will enjoy
reading about it once details are published.

Interesting that Elecraft chose to go with a
reduced sized KX3 as their new offering, but it
does make some sense. There are several new,
smaller QRP rigs coming out these days, and
possibly this may blunt the interest in those to
some extent. It's also just a tad bit
irritating that the info we are seeing, for the
most part, is coming out of Japan!!! I don't
quite get that. Well, we are probably only a few
days away from more info here.

As an owner of a KX3, I won't be moved too
quickly to jump on this new offering. However,
those on the fence up to now may find this to be
a more appealing option. It's not yet clear
what you are giving up--a couple of watts
apparently, and a couple of bands at both ends
of the HF spectrum (160 and 6). I assume the
PX3 will mate with the KX2, but not sure.
Hopefully the ATU option will be as good.

One thing that intrigues me somewhat is that the
KX2, combined with the KPAX100, might be a more
versatile portable/mobile combination than the
KX3 as a substitute. For mobile operating, the
KX3 is a bit clumsy, but the reduced size of the
KX2 might make it work better--not sure.

Anyway, I just continue to be fascinated with
what Elecraft comes up with. They are fun to
watch! I had sort of expected maybe something
with a larger display, and maybe a touch screen,
but not yet! That may be a K4 feature, whenever
that comes about.

I agree with you... I use my KX3 mobile, but it is a bit of a clumsy thing
(though I use it with only 15 watts, it works wonders).

I will add the 100 watt amp at some point. I don't need the 2 bands, so I
would be VERY interested in this rig.

It weighs 13 ounces. You might be able to get a full kit under a pound
(batteries, antenna, etc.).
