As some of us on this list know (and the rest of us should know), the
Morse-based Safety of Life at Sea requirements have been changed about
15 years ago to a satellite- and SSB- based Global Maritime Distress and
Safety System. New ships, and many older ships, no longer have radio
equipment capable of and certified for working MF or HF Morse, and with
the exception of a handful of historical installations, there are no
coast stations available to work them, even if the ship's comm officer
holds the appropriate Radio Officer and RadioTelegraph Operator licenses.

The best approach would be to get permission from the Master of the
vessel to operate a ham station which, by law, must be separate and
distinct from the ship's radio communication system. The operator must
have the appropriate authorization from the country of the ship's
registry as well.

At least that's what the law says

Phil has a great idea.

Since the GMDSS system is virtually always located on the navigating bridge
where one of the officers there operate it, the space for the radio room
should be available for a Ham rig.

Now to hide a K-line setup behind vintage front panels identical to those in
the original Titanic ;-)

Actually, it was spark that played a role, and we probably won't hear that from
the Titanic II, since it hasn't been legal on the air since 1938.
CW was still at least a decade off, though the date seems to be elusive.
Spark was still the mode used in 1920 for ships at sea, as chronicled in the
novel The Nymph and the Lamp, by Thomas Raddall, a good read.
And, yes, it would be nice if Morse Code could be heard from the Titanic II, in
any mode.

Re: [Elecraft] OT - Titanic II 2016 ...and CW?

2013-03-02 Thread stan levandowski
My own research done for a recent club presentation suggested that Spark
was dead around 1920 for commercial purposes as a result of Lee
DeForest's vacuum tube which ushered in the age of CW. I also found
several references to spark having been outlawed for use on the ham
bands in 1923-1924. By the late 1920s the only spark transmitters still
in operation were legacy units on naval vessels. What I wasn't able to
determine is if the term naval meant Navy or Merchant or both. In
any case, my point is the Titanic sent CQD and later SOS using Morse
Code. 73, Stan WB2LQF

Tony, here is a link to an article and if you page down one or two
