I tend to agree Eric. I have not commented yet. We need to understand what happened with the original message in this thread and more importantly how to prevent it. Power cuts happen, for whatever reason and we can't have them bricking the radio, whatever it happens to be doing at the time. I am sure Elecraft have been working on it, probably late into the night. For the record, I like my K3, it has excellent design and is one of the best transceivers available to date. Much of this is due to firmware which has no doubt grown to be a very complex system, with all that entails. I like powerpoles, they work well and mine don't fall out. They easily handle 30A. Crimps are best avoided unless done professionally so I always solder them. They have revolutionised my station's configuration providing quick reliable foolproof 12V interconnects. When the external power source is higher than internal batts, radio will use the external supply. The internal batts are unused and will indicate open circuit voltage. I have my K3 hooked up to the AL600 and it works great. Now I would like to add the auto band switching. Has anyone done this and how does it work out? Did you home brew the cables or is there a supplier that sells them? ARI-500 works if your ALS-600 is the newer one with provision for remote switching. The original LPF board was not relay controllable. You can also use the W9XT BCD-10 and source driver boards if you're willing to do a little packaging work. 73, ... I have an article approved for publishing in QST that shows how to add automatic relay switching to the AL600. 12 relays and a band decoder that provides a ground for each selected band are required. Monty K2DLJ ARI-500 works if your ALS-600 is the newer one with provision for remote switching. The original LPF board was not relay controllable. When someone has an intermittent power issue and their rig uses Molex, I check there first. I usually find the socket pin spread and making poor contact. I can fix it for a while by using a small tube to help compress the socket pin to proper size. I have no such problem with Power Poles. I've become extremely fond of the Rollabind / Circa (Levenger) / Arc (Staples) systems. The only real investment is the punch; the discs themselves are cheap, and you can either buy nice binders or make your own. Traditional three-ring binder components can be used just by re-punching them for use with the discs. The Levenger lever punch is a bit spendy, but it'll punch through cardboard, so you can make binders for any size/shape you like. Andrew,Phil hit the nail on the head. When you have the power supply attached (or an external battery with a voltage greater than the internal battery voltage), the KX3 Battery Voltage displays the UNLOADED voltage of the internal NiMH cells. When you remove that external power, the internal battery powers the KX3, so the KX3 Battery Voltage displays the LOADED voltage of the internal NiMH cells. The difference between the loaded and unloaded voltage is primarily due to the internal resistance of the NiMH cells. The LOADED voltage reading will vary depending on what the load current is. If you see 10.2V during receive, and you key the rig with few watts of output, you will see that loaded voltage drop a bit farther due to the added current draw. That is the effect that internal battery (cell) resistance has.The internal resistance of the cells has a good effect, too. It is partially responsible for the self leveling effect (the tendency for a group of cells in series to end up at the same voltage after charging) that is inherent in NiMH cells.The KXBC3 is strictly a constant current charger. You turn it on for a length of time, and it tries to keep the current at a constant of about 10% the capacity of the cells...about 200ma in the case of the KXBC3. I don't believe there is a trickle charger as a design feature in the KXBC3; however, there appears to be a very small reverse current leakage that may tend to reduce the effects of the self discharge properties of the cells. It is probably small (a few microamps?) in relation to that, but my LSD (Low Self Discharge) Eneloop 2000's seem to stay charged longer if I keep the radio hooked up to a 13.8v supply. I haven't quantified this yet. The self discharge rate is so low with these cells that it is difficult to tell. As Don pointed out, it may depend on the source voltage, so there is another variable thrown in.MarkKE6BB Hope this e-mail works out. Ed: Here are a few relevant numbers: XV144: NF = 0.8 dB SP144VDG: NF=0.55 dB, gain=24 dB, 25w max rating Coax Loss for 25-feet: RG-58= 1.25 dB RG-213= 0.55 dB LMR400= 0.38 With SP144VDG at antenna: system NF=0.61 dB using 25 feet of RG-58 system NF=0.60 dB using 25 feet of LMR-400 so it doesn't matter what coax you run Assuming sky temp of 250K at 2m (probably the best one will see somewhere out in the desert) receiver sensitivity for SSB is in the range of -138 dBm, which is excellent. For urban noise levels sky temp of 500K, receiver sensitivity is -136 dBm - with SP144VDG at XV144 and 25 foot of coax to antenna: system NF= 0.93 dB using 25 foot of LMR-400 system NF= 1.10 dB using 25 foot of RG-213 system NF= 1.80 dB using 25 foot of RG-58 coax makes a big difference in NF. sky temp=250K: sensitivity = -138.4 dBm with LMR-400 and sensitivity= -137.6 dBm with RG-58 sky temp=500K: sensitivity = -136.4dBm with LMR-400 and sensitivity= -135.9 dBm with RG-58 I looked up in QRZ.com and Trinidad, CA looks pretty rural so maybe you can use the lower sky temperature figure for estimating performance. So what does this tells us: Preamp at antenna is best (we knew that) and one can run cheap coax (without degrading NF and sensitivity). If you keep preamp in the shack then you want to use good low loss coax for best performance. Considering that you may not have a lot of stations nearby and making long-distance contacts involving weak signals, I would put the preamp at the antenna. The SP144VDG is self-switching with RF sensing so only 12v need be provided. This is a very simple setup so why not install it at the antenna? I will say that I normally use external coax relays with plain preamps, but I have installed on a 2m yagi a RF sensed ARR preamp for simplicity for use with a FM 2m radio. It works very nicely with stations 70+ miles away running FM simplex. It is "almost" as sensitive as my my four-yagi eme array+ preamps ( but not quite). I run 80 foot of LMR-400 from the preamp to the radio. One sidenote: 25w is not very much power to operate long distance on 2m. [Elecraft] K3, Microham MK2R+, Rear Phone Jack = Hum
Hello Group, I just installed a Microham MK2R+ SO2R box, I connected the HP Audio input of the MK2R+ to the 'rear' phone jack of the K3. Lot's of hum on the receive audio and distortion on my monitored ssb transmissions. When I unplugged the cable from the rear phone jack on the K3 and plugged it into the front panel phone jack, the hum goes away. Any ideas why the front panel phone jack works without hum but the rear phone jack has hum? I was hoping the rear jack would work as then I would have a totally uncluttered front panel on the K3, all the cables would be plugged in the rear. Any ideas? Rich, Check your cables. That sounds like an open shield somewhere in your cabling. Do you have a very early K3? Those had inductors in series with the ground path that should have been bypassed. [Elecraft] KPA-500 Question
I'm assembling a KPA-500 that I received today and I'm at the step where I mount the Rectifier bd to the Z-bracket. It looks like the 4 holes for mounting the rectifiers should be threaded for 4-40 screws but mine has about 1/8" holes. There is no mention of using a screw and nut to mount them and there is none provided. Gary, Try to put a 4-40 screw into the holes. If it goes through, it is a 1/8 inch hole (clearance for 4-40 screws), but if it must be threaded in, all is well. A threaded hole for 4-40 will look almost like a 1/8 inch hole.
