RE: Rack populating??-Rationalize it !!

2000-07-25 Thread Bandele Adepoju

You need to concern yourself with how may shelves to
install in a rack only if you are responsible for the
rack and its contents. If your responsibility is limited
to the shelf, don't worry about the rack. Test rack with
your shelf only - at top half.

For rack concerns, I only populate racks at 50% load to
test, if the shelves are of identical type. My experience
has shown that if you are going to have any problems with
emissions or emissions margins, you will see this at half
rack with identical shelves. Anything beyond this would not
be cost effective.

However, if the shelves are of different type, you MUST
test at full rack.

Methinks I must protest against the "keep adding until no more
than xdB".
As near as I can tell that was put in place by the FCC and others to
minimize
cable bundles - I cannot see how that applies to rack systems. The
fundamental
truth is that - no matter how one rationalizes it - if the full system is
not
tested then you flat have no idea what the real emissions profile is.

Come on stop rationalizing - admit that there will be systems in the field
that
fail - and move on. This is a byproduct of volume vs test. The higher the
volume
the more rationalization takes place (witness the Class B procedures) until
the emissions standards will be rendered irrelevant.

RE: 8591EM monitor output

2000-07-25 Thread CARTER

The differences between PAL & NTSC go way beyond modulating RF. Even at
baseband, the monitors will be different & one may not work with the other's
signal. The Frame rate, or vertical interval is different - NTSC based on
North American AC at 60 Hz, as opposed to European 50 Hz, and the Horizontal
sync is different, as a result of being harmonically related to the vertical
sync. There is an issue (probably not with the signals in question) with the
color sub-carrier frequency offset from the video carrier, and the fact that
(because of the aforementioned) the video (baseband) bandwidth for PAL is
much wider than NTSC. A monitor may work with the other format if it is a
little forgiving (has some slop built into the sync'ing circuits). Give it a
shot with whatever is on hand, then go shopping if need be.

A modulator for PAL is different than NTSC! PAL receivers use different
frequencies and I also think there are other differences!) . However, I
would assume that if you're in a locality that has PAL receivers then you
should be able to easily get a PAL modulator.
Remember also, that most "new" (last 5 years or so) receivers (at least US
NTSC ones) have a base-band video input (making them also a monitor!), then
you wouldn't need a RF modulator!

Jeff:

Radio Shack sells an RF modulator that will do the job. If you feed it
to a
VCR you can also record the results as well as view it on a TV set. As
mentioned, it produces NTSC compatible video on CH3 or 4. Price should
be
around $25. U.S.

Re: Rack populating??

2000-07-25 Thread Lfresearch

In an experiment we performed using a 16 slot rack we determined that the
noise floor level increased with the number of cards we added to the system.
But we also observed that the spectral line associated with the primary
clocks on eack card did not increas significantly as more cards were added.

We finally ran the test with 4 cards as a good compromise.

You can pick up a "not feeling well" or dead - older VCR in thrift shops or
garage sales for 2-5 dollars. Most all of them had "packaged" modulators
inside. A check of the modulator by connection to a TV and checking for
sync is advisable. Remember to measure the voltage prior to ripping it out
of the unit or proceed with caution as some of them I have encountered use
odd voltages (3.8 to 11 volts). Good hunting //M. Taylor - (Dodging fires

FIRE ENCLOSURES ACCORDING TO IEC 60065

2000-07-25 Thread Rafael González

Dear Sirs,

We have a doubt about the subclause 20.2 ' Fire enclosure' of the standard
IEC 60065:1998.
The clause 20.2 has three additional subclauses.

The subclause 20.2.1. is applicable only to equipment with open circuit
voltages exceeding 4 kV (peak).
The subclause 20.2.2. is about requirements for internal fire enclosures and
here we have a problem:

Must all the equipment have a fire enclosure or only those which contain
circuits with voltages exceeding 4 kV?

Best regards,

Jeff:

Radio Shack sells an RF modulator that will do the job. If you feed it
to a
VCR you can also record the results as well as view it on a TV set. As
mentioned, it produces NTSC compatible video on CH3 or 4. Price should
be
around $25. U.S.

RE: UL Recognized 24VDC PC Supply

2000-07-25 Thread Mel Pedersen

Hello:

QQPX2 would be the UL category you should check. ITE or other type power
supplies will not do for a hazardous location.

There are many things one needs to consider when dealing with Explosive
Atmospheres not considered in ITE or other safety standards.

Listed under QQPX2 are:

Diversified Technical Services
1400 Distributors Row
Harahan LA 70123

Sola/Hevi-Duty
Unit of General Signal
1101 S Wells Street
Lake Geneva W1 53147

Vicor Corp
25 Frontage Road
Andover MA 01810

Hope this helps,

If you have a copy of the UL recognized component directory they
have a gazillion companies that have recognized supplies. I am looking at
the 2000 edition volume two (CCN QQGQ2)for power supplies used in ITE and it
runs from page 845 to 1274. There are different sections for medical
equipment and other uses. Its a good place to start hunting.

Subject: UL Recognized 24VDC PC Supply

Does anyone know of a good source for a UL Recognized 24VDC PC Supply? It's
not too difficult to find 24VDC input power supplies, but finding one that
is UL recognized is another matter. I'm trying to get a product certified
for use in hazardous locations.

Thanks,
