Hi Listees!

The year is starting out on a good note.

I just found out that the USA Department of Defense now has a public access
site for all 100,000 or so DoD documents. [This is new, since they
previously required that you sign up for a commercial account.] All you have

to do now, to get a pdf of any active USA specification, is just go to:

There are at least four chemical compositions that qualify for the term
petroleum spirits You can find their specification at the ASTM website

http://www.astm.org/DATABASE.CART/PAGES/D235.htm

The spec you want is:

RE: Seeking assistance from Chemical Experts

2001-01-02 Thread georgea

We might be trying to make a mountain out of a molehill here.
The basic intent of the various standards is to ensure that power
rating information is not easily rubbed off. The international
standards IEC/EN60950 (sec. 1.7.15) stipulate 15 second rub tests
using water and petroleum spirits. The makeup of these spirits
is stipulated.

However, if a label withstands the rub test with any of the usual
household spirits, e.g. kerosene, isopropyl alcohol, rubbing
alcohol, lamp oil, lighter fluid, gasoline etc., it will probably
withstand the test same with any of the uniquely specified
petroleum spirits.

I assume each of us has at one time tried to remove printing or
the complete label from a jar or bottle for other uses. My own
experience is that if one spirit will work, so will the others.
Some (gasoline) will work faster than others (lighter fluid).
Conversely, if a randomly chosen spirit will not work, it is time
to try a knife blade or blow torch (just kidding about the torch).

Just to give you an idea of how confusing this issue is, I have privately
received responses stating that all the following are acceptable:
 Kerosene
 Isopropyl alcohol
 Rubbing Alcahol
 Lamp Oil
 Hexane

Now I am not a chemical expert, but the chemical properties of these
chemicals are not similar to one another (the simplest comparison is the
boiling point, the above range from 60C - 300C).

Calling UL and asking them what they use is easy...the hard part is proving
that whatever the subject chemical is, it complies with the standard. Just
wondering if anyone has had this experience before.

SCV EMC Society January 2001 Meeting Announcement

2001-01-02 Thread Neven Pischl
Meeting Announcement:

Santa Clara Valley Chapter of IEEE EMC Society Meeting

Scott Bennett:
The Physics of Electromagnetics Without Abstract Mathematics

Tuesday, January 9, 2001

The January meeting of the Santa Clara Valley EMC Society will be held at SGI in
Mountain View, 1600 Amphitheatre Pkwy., building 40, in the Presentation Center
above the lobby. The social gathering will start at 5:30 PM, and food and
drinks will be available. The technical presentation will start at 7:30 PM. A
map with the location of the SGI campus is available at the Santa Clara Valley
web site www.scvemc.org .

Abstract :

The basic point source of electromagnetic fields -- the charge element -- is
derived and described with basic physics and high-school mathematics. The
charge element is a simpler point source than the current element -- it has
five field components, whereas the current element has seven -- yet these two
basic field sources are shown to be equivalent.

The physical causes of the two H-field and three E-field components of the
charge element are easily explained, and they are kept obvious with the
descriptions derived for those components. Simple examples are then given to
show how to use charge elements to better understand the fields of full-size
currents, and the physical origins of those fields.

Neven Pischl

Re: TNV-1 in Norway

2001-01-02 Thread JPR3
In a message dated 1/2/01, Gaétan Hogue writes:

I have an TNV-1 interface (ISDN) on a card going in a computer.
Some of my designers told me that we need reinforced isolation
 transformer(3kv) in Norway.

Hi Gaétan:

The main requirement for reinforced insulation is between the TNV-1 circuit
and the AC power mains. This is usually taken care of by the insulation in
your power supply.

Your designers may be referring to the requirement for supplementary
insulation between TNV-1 circuits and earth ground. In the main text of EN
60950, only a hipot test is required (clause 6.4.1), but Annex ZB in EN 60950
calls out additional requirements for Norway and Sweden. For Norway, you
will need supplementary insulation unless you qualify for the exemptions
related to permanent grounding or a Type B mains plug.

If you decide to implement supplementary insulation, keep in mind that in
addition to a 1500 VRMS hipot test, there are specific requirements for
creepage distance, clearance distance, and distance through insulation. This
will affect your board layout, your choice of transformer, and (sometimes)
your choice of connector.

Recently, I was asked to show that the hexane that I was using for UL1950
and related standards (Marking durability test of 1.7.15) infact complied
with the requirements in the standard, Specifically:

The petroleum spirit to be used for the test is aliphatic solvent
hexane having a maximum aromatics content of a 0.1% by volume, a
kauri-butanol value of 29, an initial boiling point of approximately
65°C, a dry point of approximately 69°C and a mass per unit volume of
approximately 0.7 kg/l.

I am communicating with the company that I purchased the chemical from, and
all I get is the MSDS Sheets which do not have all of the above information.

Has anyone else had to locate these specifications? How did you go about
obtaining them. I am not opposed to having a lab test for these
characteristics, but I have no clue where to begin with such a
test...chemistry was NOT my best subject!

I know that this conversation came up in the past and I believe everyone
agreed that standard hexane would suffice...I just need to be able to show
that hexane meets the above requirements.

Thanks in advance,
Kenneth

anyone successfully built an 8-10 foot wide durable outside structure using
PVC pipe? If so, what type of PVC pipe was it?

Seeking assistance from Chemical Experts

2001-01-02 Thread Kenneth McCormick

Thanks in advance,
Kenneth

CEPT Standards

2001-01-02 Thread Mike Hopkins

I've had a request to meet CEPT T/TR 02-02E, but can find no references to
this. I found the CEPT web site, but they don't mention any standards at
all. Can only find references to radio conferences, postage stamps and
amateur radio -- nothing specific to testing products.

Anyone out there have any information that would at least tell me what this
is ??

Thanks,,,

USA DoD Document Source

2001-01-02 Thread Price, Ed

Hi Listees!

The year is starting out on a good note.

I just found out that the USA Department of Defense now has a public access
site for all 100,000 or so DoD documents. [This is new, since they
previously required that you sign up for a commercial account.] All you have
to do now, to get a pdf of any active USA specification, is just go to:

http://astimage.daps.dla.mil/quicksearch/

and search by number, title or subject.

Wouldn't it be nice for all the other regulatory bodies to take a hint here?

TNV-1 in Norway

2001-01-02 Thread Gaetan Hogue

Hi all

Can you help me

EN60950 or IEC950 nordic deviation

I have an TNV-1 interface (ISDN) on a card going in a computer.
Some of my designers told me that we need reinforced isolation
transformer(3kv) in Norway.

For me, this result is reliant on the host equipment, and whether the host
employs a connection to earth.

I think that the computer power supply must be reinforced already and the
Interface transformer can be only 1.5kv.

Do I need 3kv transformer for TNV-1 interface in Norway for pc cards?

Thanks

Thanks to everyone who responded. Several of you suggested using PVC pipe.
We have tried using schedule 40 PVC pipe (the stuff you find at Home Depot)

anyone successfully built an 8-10 foot wide durable outside structure using
PVC pipe? If so, what type of PVC pipe was it?

HP6842A harmonics analyser - is it obsolete?

2001-01-02 Thread Colgan, Chris

Happy New Year!

Not such a happy start for me though. I have been informed by Agilent that
they will not be supporting a software upgrade for the 6800 series harmonics
analysers for A14 to EN61000-3-2.

I have studied A14 and there appear to be some measurement technique
changes. Does this mean that I cannot just set my HP6842A to measure class
A limits to test to A14? If I cannot, does anyone know of a company that
has written or can write a software upgrade for me?

Or have Agilent turned several thousand pounds worth of compliance test
equipment into a few hundred pounds worth of power supply?

It's just a wire, isn't it?

2001-01-02 Thread Douglas C. Smith

Hi All,

After a few weeks of holiday rush, I managed to write my
technical article for January.

And when is a wire, not just a wire?.

After a few month's of articles on measurement techniques,
this month's Technical Tidbit article on www.dsmith.org is
more along the lines of design and system reliability. The
article is about the amazing property of a conductor to
develop significant series voltage drop across its length,
even from an ordinary logic signal. Many engineers and
technicians already know that the inductive reactance of a
conductor exceeds its resistance at most frequencies, but
even logic signals can produce volts of drop across the
inductance in a short wire. The article also contains an
amusing personal experience having to do with this effect.
Go to http://www.dsmith.org for the article.

I hope everyone had a good holiday season.

Doug
