Re: WTC - voice alarm system?

2001-09-21 Thread Doug McKean

It is my hope no takes offense with what I'm about to say.
It is not intended to have that effect.

The ASQ is not any sort of regulatory agency at all. It can
only suggest things to be done in light of quality standards.

To make such effects would be to input and effect changes
within the NEC or the NFPA. Those agencies can most
definately impose immediate effects.

It is not without great sympathy for those who died that I
say this is a professional forum by professionals. And that
there is no secure data being discussed here. It is precisely
the effect to be restrictive about open exchange of information
that terrorists want to have.

In light of the fact that someone's daughter I know was on
the plane which went down in Pennsylvania, would we,
should NOT discuss the safety issues of knives aboard
a plane? Where would this restriction stop? Or does it?
What subjects are to be restricted here?

I think it was most appropriate for John to ask the initial
question and I would support such discussions in the future.

And it is with my deepest apologies if this offends anyone.
It was not my intention.

RE: WTC - voice alarm system?

2001-09-21 Thread David_Sterner

Paul,

American Society for Quality ( website, http:/www.asq.org ) is asking for
professionals to volunteer for a panel to do this type of analysis.
Probabilistic evaluations (Reliability, Quality, Fault Tree) are more ASQ
than EMC.

We all want to do something constructive and are frustrated by our
inability to contribute. Here is a chance for us to help.

I would agree that, hypothetically, requesting pictures of plunging bodies
would be totally inappropriate; however discussing the safety aspects of
the
WTC appears to be very on-topic for our group. Regarding the non-security
of
our group; I doubt that anything we say about the WTC can cause any further
degradation of security to that site.

Everyone must deal with this shocking event within their own reference
frame. The more technically inclined among us try to salvage some lessons,
in building design or crowd control or emergency techniques, perhaps as the
best tribute they can pay to the unfortunate victims.

2001-09-21 Thread Nick Williams

I'd be grateful for comments as to the application of the EMC
Directive to petrol engine powered pedestrian controlled lawn mowers.
So far as I can see there is no reason not to think of them as any
other household appliance, albeit not a mains connected one.

Testing these in any kind of sealed environment clearly raises some
interesting challenges. Observations and comments on any experience
which people can offer would be welcome.
