Let’s see….. The popcorn package label says “Place bag in a 1000 watt
microwave oven. Set power level to HIGH. Cook for 5 minutes……” When
you take the popcorn out of the oven, it is HOT and it BURNS your finger to
touch the popcorn.

If you believe the power through this COLD RESISTOR can cook a popcorn,
then
I have a Golden Gate Bridge to sell you. Of course, what long term side
effects cell phone has on the human body (ringing in ear due to one sided
hearing, muscle cramps in the arm and neck, poor brain development in young
children due to concentration to sound coming from only one ear, hormonal
imbalance due to lack of exercise….) is unknown to people. But cooking
popcorn with a cell phone radiated power is ridiculous.

George

My oven does the MIL STD popcorn bag in just a few seconds over 3 minutes.

I hate to guess the ratio of viewers of that video who analyzed the conditions
(antenna direction, underlying physics) to those who now know they have proof
that cell phones are more dangerous than ever.

A cell phone battery can last for about 6 hour talk time after one full
charge, so the power consumed per second is very low. The power transmitted
through the antenna is probably 5 to 7mW. For the law of conservation of
energy to work, you will need about 100,000 cell phones all transmitting IN
PHASE for this to work. To put this another way, the size of a popcorn is
about the same as the size of a ¼ watt through hole resistor (with wire
leads). This resistor, through its natural surface heat dissipation, will get
hot when you drive 1V, 250mA of power through it. But when you decrease the
power down to 10mW (less than 5% of the rated power capacity), the resistor
will not even get warm. What I am saying is this – the cell phone antenna
radiates power in all directions, so very little arrives at the popcorn, but
even if you take the full power (10mW) and drive that through the ¼ W
resistor, the component will not even get warm (at 5% capacity) to the touch,
as compared to the burning hot popcorn out of the microwave oven. If you
believe the power through this COLD RESISTOR can cook a popcorn, then I have a
Golden Gate Bridge to sell you. Of course, what long term side effects cell

If no headset is supplied, or perhaps marketed to 'go with' the phone,
EN 50332-1 cannot be applied. The companion standard, EN 50332-2, which
applies to signal sources and headphones separately, is also referenced
in the Note. BUT PLEASE NOTE, it is a NOTE, giving information; there is
NO requirement to apply either standard.

In fact, both standards are highly controversial and steps are being
taken to create a more satisfactory situation. Meanwhile, I recommend
that you include in the instruction book for your product, advice about
the subject, along the lines at this Microsoft web site, under 'Zune and

Mobile cell phones & popcorn

2008-06-18 Thread Jacob Schanker
Popping corn by cell phone radiation is clearly, and fortunately, not
possible. Besides, the antennas are pointed the wrong way for maximum
radiation into the kernels !

CNN broadcast a story about the video yesterday. It is available on the web at

if anyone is interested.

Next topic: Can directing laser pointers at kernels pop the corn, and would
this violate an EU regulation?

RE: OATS tests after rain

2008-06-18 Thread Rudd, Adam
Mac,

I have witnessed significant variations in measurements depending on if the
OATS was wet or not. It was several dB, and that amount varied a lot over the
frequency range. Additionally, IIRC the way it varied over frequency was also
not particularly constant rain storm to rain storm. I don’t have any solid
numbers or plots to share though, just that we avoided it whenever scheduling
allowed.

These days, I only have a semi-anechoic chamber; however, once we have results
that we are happy with and that meet internal guidelines, we send the EUT to a
third party test lab for official verification where they use an OATS. It has
a tent that covers just the EUT area, not the entire 10 meter site, so there
is plenty of area for water to puddle up. We have them test rain or shine,
whatever they are comfortable with, which I think as long as there is no
lightning posing a safety hazard they will run the test. If my margins are
where I want them to be, 6dB+, I’m pretty confident it will pass. The EUT
has been thoroughly tested in my chamber, so I have results that reflect
normal conditions; I just need some results from an accredited laboratory to
show that I am passing, to put in my final report, and to base my conformity
statements on.

Hello Colleagues

After rain on an OATS, what are your typical guidelines for the resumption of
test?

I worked with one great engineer on this board at one time who had seen
dramatic differences on his OATS after rain and would shut down until the next
day when the site was dry.

We are trying to run two shifts here and in S. Florida have afternoon rains
that are frequently short in duration.

I have done a few experiments that shows that it seems OK as long once the
rain has stopped and any standing water has run off. There are some damp spots
under the ground mesh and maybe some residual moisture on the mesh.

Thoughts? Experiences?

Does anybody have any input / advice on the above clause regarding its
applicability to the headset socket of a DECT phone (for instance) - if the

I don’t have a copy of EN 50332-1 but I am guessing that it outlines a

earpiece or speaker. If no headset is supplied then unless a reference
earpiece or speaker is specified, the test is not carried out and would be not
applicable - Right or wrong?

RE: mobile phone safety

2008-06-18 Thread Scott B. Lacey
I suspect this is the kind of "artistic license"
used in many TV commercials. It fits in nicely
with talking cows and other absurdities. Seen
in proper context most people would see it as
a clever joke.

I'm guessing this comes from an ad that got
posted on a viral video site.

Hi Daniel:

Can you describe the type of equipment involved? Does it use wireless
transmitters? Does it have connections to the wireline phone network?

I can probably help identify the applicable requirements, but I would like to
narrow down the scope a bit first.

OATS tests after rain

2008-06-18 Thread Elliott Mac-FME001

Regards,

Re: mobile phone safety

2008-06-18 Thread Ken Javor

Obvious hoax. Consider how hot popcorn has to get to pop. Do you feel
any heating with a cell phone next to your body? Less intuitively,
consider the difference in power density levels. The smallest
microwave generates hundreds of Watts of rf power, the typical oven
generates over a kilowatt. Further, the microwave oven is a
mode-stirred chamber, a reverberation chamber: all that energy is
contained in a small volume and forced to bang around until absorbed
by the item placed within the cavity. That's why you're not supposed
to operate the oven empty - with nothing to absorb the energy, it can
reflect back into the magnetron and damage it. Imagine you had a 500
Watt TWTA driving a 20 dBi standard gain horn. I'm taking bets from
anyone on the list or off that you put a bag of popcorn in front of
that horn and nothing happens. Let alone a cell phone.

Power Spectral Density Measurement

2008-06-18 Thread Grace Lin
Dear Members,

I need your help to find out what may be wrong/inaccurate for the power
spectral density measurement per 47 CFR 15.247.

I was told the data I took was about 6 dB higher. I follow the measurement
procedure (PSD Option 1) for the digital transmission system, published by the
FCC (

https://fjallfoss.fcc.gov/oetcf/kdb/for
s/FTSSearchResultPage.cfm?id=21124&switch=P). The antenna port of the
transmitter was connected to the R&S ESU40 receiver (in spectrum analyzer
mode). Data was taken with and without 30dB attenuators to avoid overload
issue. RBW=3kHz, VBW=10kHz, Span=1.5MHz, Sweep=500s. I couldn't figure out
where might be wrong.

Thank you and look forard to your instructions.

Best regards,

Grace

The 1988 version is superseded by the 1996 version, which you can buy
