Creepage dist. for more than 1000V ?

2001-07-29 Thread Israel Yeshurun

Hello all !

I wonder how to specify creepage distance for Information Technology
Equipment.Table 6 in UL1950 or EN60950 specifies minimum creepage of
10 mm for Working voltage = 1000 V, pollution degree 2, material group IIIb
(basic insulation) linear Interpolation is permitted between nearest
specified points. So how can one determine creepage distance for 1500 V,
2000 V ?

 Thanks in advance

Hazardous Infrared radiation ?

2000-05-22 Thread Israel Yeshurun

Can some comment on this ?

Can Infrared radiation (not Laser) be hazardous ? Obviously, high
enough IR intensity should be hazardous. As the eye may not blink under
exposure to IR (as the eye can not see it) the natural eye protection
mechanism may not function.

Any standards, guidelines available for permissible exposure limits to
Infra red radiation ?

Many thanks to every contribution !

FW: Compressed Air. Pneumatics, Safety requirements

1999-11-22 Thread Israel Yeshurun

 -Original Message-
 From: Israel Yeshurun
Subject: Compressed Air. Pneumatics, Safety requirements

Dear Group Members,

I would appreciate comments to the following:

General: In some equipment, Compressed Air is used to
energize mechanical parts (in addition to electrical power used in the
equipment) safety Interlocking of those mechanical parts, can be
performed by draining of the pressured air or by equalizing air pressure
on both sides of the operating pistons, or by ?? The compressed air can
be supplied from outside of the machine or be produced inside the machine
by intended internal air compressor. This may rise the following
 questions:

1) For Low Voltage Directive Equipment, utilizing compressed air,
are there any specific Safety requirements? I looked in UL1950, EN60950
 but could not find such.

2) Regarding Machinery Directive products: Are there specific
 requirements? intended standards ?

   Any response will be appreciated,

Regards, Israel Yeshurun,
 Compliance Engineer.

Hot Surface. Hot air.

1999-10-07 Thread Israel Yeshurun

 Dear Group Fellows

I would like to raise the following two issues:

   1) UL1950 / EN60950 Safety standards, Subclause 5.1 - Heating, Table
16 part 2, specify permissible temperature rise for external surfaces of
equipment in Operator Access Area..
For external surfaces, made of metal which may be touched, it allows
temperature rise of 45 degrees Kelvin, assuming ambient temperature of 25
degrees Celsius it allows surface temperature of 70 degrees Celsius = 158
degrees Fahrenheit !
Note (4) in this table applies to external surfaces that are not likely
to be touched in normal use and measure less than 50 mm, in this case it
allows a temperature rise of 75 degrees K, that under 25 degrees C ambient
allows
100 degrees C = 212 degrees F !!

Now, 70 degrees C for external equipment surface that may be touched
seems pretty high to me. 100 degrees C metal surface will, I believe, cause
a burn to that part of the human body that touched it.
So maybe my interpretation is not true ??and, can someone point
another regulatory source for Hot surface permissible temperature ?

  2) Regarding Hot air flowing out of equipment, in UL1950 / EN60950 I
could not find a requirement or limit for the maximum permissible
temperature for it, Can someone point another regulatory source for Hot air
permissible temperature ?

Note: The equipment I relate to is ITE or Office, but information from
Machinery standards or other sources is welcome !

Many Thanks
Israel Yeshurun

Safety Instructions in Electronic Format

1998-06-03 Thread Israel Yeshurun

 Hello All !

Please advise: For products pursuing compliance with the EC Low
 Voltage Directive and EN60950:

 1. Must the User safety instructions be provided as a hardcopy or may
it be provided on CD ROM, or as a part of the Product Software?

 2. I assume that it is at the manufacturer sole discretion to provide
Service safety instruction as hardcopy or as an electronic media.

 Comments ?
