RE: ENV 50121-5

2001-09-07 Thread Stewart, Judd

I am a little miffed at the cost of some of these standards! The preview as
some have suggested is a great idea.

Here in the US the government published Mil-Standards. These standards were
created with taxpayer monies and therefore were available from the
government printing office for the cost of printing. With the invention of
the Internet by Al Gore many of these standards are available totally free.
Recently I have been seeking standards concerning fasteners and it appears
the government is getting out of the standard business and giving the
document to a independent organization who in turn will charge me for
something I have already paid for..go figure.

I wonder sometimes were this is leading, Are we going to be faced in our
personal lives with pay per view government rules!

I agree that the scope should be in the public domain so we
can
verify relevance before committing to purchase. I for one
really
wouldn't mind spending a whole day (week even!) reading
the
various scopes if I know that the decisions I will make
about
which standards to purchase, will be correct. As things
stand at the
moment, I spend that week waiting for the wrong standard to
arrive in
the post! I have at times resorted to a trip to the local
public library
to check on the scope but even that has taken a whole day
because
I keep *asking* for the wrong standards based on what I
thought would
be the applicable standard.

Finding the right standard really should be a lot more
straightforward.

Is there anything we can do about this?

Yes. Since you are in UK, write to the Director of Standards
at BSI and
put your point to him. In other countries, write to the
appropriate
official in your national standards body.

Support letters from individuals and companies with letters
from trade
associations.

Military Equimpment and the EU

2001-09-04 Thread Stewart, Judd

Good morning!

I am faced with coming up with a regulatory strategy for equipment that
will be sold to a foreign military (member of the EU). The equipment is
entirely military and has military unique attributes. The products range
from battery operated hand held devices to laptops that can use a battery
adapter which plugs into the mains.
All units have LI-ION batteries and High voltage inverters for powering the
LCD backlight.
Some have a standard PCMIA card slot which will allow the user to install a
commercial modem if he chooses. We do not provide this card

I have reviewed the LVD and EMC directives and find no exclusion for
military equipment. Is there?

What other directives may be applicable?

Thanks in advance

Australian Safety Requirements

1999-03-02 Thread Stewart, Judd
Hello everyone!

My product ( ITE) is installed in cars and I am looking for regulations that
govern this type of product and installation? I have found contacts with
regard to EMC but nothing on Safety.

Does anyone have an email address of a regulatory agency that deals with
Safety of ITE in vehicles?

Regards,

Judd Stewart

Directives

1998-12-08 Thread Stewart, Judd
Hello Everyone...!

I have a couple of questions concerning the EU and directives and how they
apply to ITE .

1) I have in my hands guidelines on the application of Council
Directive 89/336/EEC. I retrieved it from the Europa server but have been
unable to find other such documents, LVD for example. Does anyone know the
proper technique to search for the main text of the directives (not the
amendments, I have found a zillion of those).

2) Can anyone shed some light on which directives (Safety, EMC, etc.)
would apply to automobile mounted ITE.

Any help is most appreciated

...Happy Holidays...

IEC 320 APPLIANCE COUPLER APPLICATION

1998-10-30 Thread Stewart, Judd
Good afternoon everyone,

Problem-

A universal battery charger that I am reviewing is powered by AC 110-220 or
24VDC.

The 24 VDC enters the device via a male IEC 320 connectorOUCH!.

The AC enters via a non-detachable recognized power cord with NEMA- 5-15
molded male connector.

Commons sense would tell you not to use this connector for the DC but they
did...The likely hood that someone would plug AC into it is extremely high.
I am looking for a regulation/standard to reference that would prevent this
sort of application...

any Ideas?

Thanks in advance,

Basic insulation

1998-03-20 Thread Stewart, Judd
Hello from San Diego,

My question deals with possible violation of the creepage distance in a
primary circuit.

We are currently designing an ac filter assembly. The board is extremely
small and we need to put text in etch (copper) on board. About the only
place is an area that provides basic insulation from ground.

Do I have an issue here?

Any help will be most appreciated.

Thanks in advance

MOV's

1998-02-19 Thread Stewart, Judd
Hello from San Diego,

Does anyone know of components that will meet the requirements of
EN60950 and also function as a MOV. The component will bridge basic
insulation in a primary circuit.

Thanks
