Re: Difference between the HP 8566A and the HP 8566B

2003-11-25 Thread Ken Javor

I don't think that is correct. I believe an 8566 is an 8566, when it comes
to frequency range. I think the B model had better rf performance,
specifically a cleaner local oscillator, resulting in a lower noise floor at
low frequencies (below 1 kHz).

I believe it was the 8568 that went to 1.5 GHz.

Re: Difference between the HP 8566A and the HP 8566B

2003-11-25 Thread robert Macy

Alas, all my vintage reference books are in storage.

As I recall, B refers to lower frequency capability and/or
finer BW resolution, like from 30Hz BW down to 10Hz BW

Simply has extended lower ranges.

RE: Difference between the HP 8566A and the HP 8566B

2003-11-25 Thread Sykes, Bob

We're getting close ;-)

The frequency ranges are as Don states.

The A or B versions of either analyzer will work with the 85650A QP adapter

Only the B version (of either) will work with the 85685A Preselector.

No, this is not correct. The 8566 in either version covers 100 Hz to 22
GHz. I think Gaby is confusing the 8566 with the 8568, which in both A and
B models covers 100 Hz to 1.5 GHz.

I am going from memory right now, but I believe the B models of both
spectrum analyzers have the capability of accepting a quasi-peak adaptor,
and have additional functions related to reading out values from the
screen. Also, the 8566B could accept a preselector (perhaps the 8568B could
too). If I remember correctly, the trace of the A versions could be read
out only as X-Y coordinate values, and it was up to the user to translate
them into level and frequency (knowing what the settings are). The B
versions read out directly in level and frequency (IIRC).

Re: Difference between the HP 8566A and the HP 8566B

2003-11-25 Thread Kent Chesley

Gaby,

HP 8568 100kHz to 1.5GHz
HP 8566 100kHz to 22GHz (options to 325GHz)

As for the A/B, I have had both and found that there is no difference in
their displays or their functions. There are more options for the B
versions, extended RAM (16K), etc. and found that the A versions were
limited using the HP OATS software. Both units and versions can be used
with a preselector and or a qusi-peak adapter.
When using a 68 or 66 with the preselector and QP adapter, these analyzers
become CISPR16 compliant receivers, giving you the best of both worlds.
I have used both analyzers for many years and found them to be two of the
best out there. However, if buying anyone of these today, you need to
consider the maintenance factor. HP no longer supports this line and parts
are hard to come by for the 68.
