In Japan, utility companies should maintain "100V" mains voltage
within 101V +/- 6V at utility supply point.

I think it is rare to mains voltage goes below 90V at the equipment
point in general, but I think it not bad idea to provide more margin
by designing equipment to work perfectly witin 85V to 110V.

Re: Japan mains voltage

2002-06-07 Thread ggarside

Standards aside, one other practical point to consider (all countries), the
+/- 10% (or whatever) that may be quoted by (or required of) the utility
company applies only to the point at which they deliver to their customer.
There will then be an additional volt-drop within the customer's
installation, from the utility supply point to the equipment connection. In
a large industrial facility (factory), this may be significant.

The volt-drop might tend to be higher in 100V than 230V systems. Also, in
many cases, the utility will be providing supply to a building or an entire
factory site, at MV voltages, and the customer will be responsible for
transforming to 100V (or 110/115/120/230/240V, etc.), and they will usually
be free to decide whether they want to bother keeping to the +/- 10% range
or not.

Yes, we have experienced similar problems at some sites in Japan.
This is one of the reasons why we specify our power supplies (we buy
them in) to cover the range from 85 V.

RE: Japan mains voltage

2002-06-04 Thread Robert Wilson

In designing power supplies, it is common to use nominal mains voltage
+/-15% (e.g. in North America, 115 +/-15%, or 98V to 132V) as a design
guideline. The same +/-15% is generally true for European 230 V designs.
Thus, using +/-10% for Japan seems a little skimpy. Given the rather odd
collection of voltages, line frequencies and power systems in use there,
if it were me, I'd allow for AT LEAST +/-15%.

As you probably know the mains voltage for Japan is 100V.
For safety we are testing up to - 10%: 90 V.
However for some situations in Japan , it seems you can even expect

So we are planning to define a general rule that a product for Japan

RE: Japan mains voltage

2002-06-04 Thread ron_wellman

Hello Eric,

Some companies have environmental test programs that subject their products to
all types of power line conditions that are not covered in regulatory
requirements. As far as line voltage tolerance testing, this depends on the
specifications you publish externally for your products. However, what
tolerance you test to internally may be greater than what you publish with a
product specification.

It just so happens, when I was with the old Hewlett-Packard, we usually tested
to +/- 12% for test and measurement products when the published tolerance was
+/- 10%. However, these products were intended for light industrial and
laboratory environments.

Finally, to the best of my knowledge, I haven't heard of Japanese line voltages
dropping below 90 Vac.

Darren,

The information that I have seen from the two sources listed below is that
Japan is nominally 100V 50/60 Hz. The 50 Hz is primarily in Eastern Japan
(Tokyo, Kawasaki, Sapporo and Yokohoma). The 60 Hz is primarily in Western
Japan (Osaka, Kyoto, Nagoya and Hiroshima).

Check out the two web sites below. They both contain lists for voltages

Darren -

the Japan mains voltage in the range you request is 100V.
As I understand it, though this is open to correction, Japan
has both 50Hz and 60Hz distribution systems, depending upon
where you are located, even on the large island. I do note,
however, that the US Dept. of Commerce's publication,

other sources that indicate both 50Hz and 60Hz.

Much of Japan is 100V 50Hz (worst case for transformers). Japan approval
should cover 50/60Hz. Hotels generate a 120V 60Hz for US appliances.

The 200V supply is more complicated. I had a JEOL electron microscope that
wanted 3-phase 200 volts. They would not let us run it on 208V 3-phase and
we had to install an elaborate conversion network.

The voltage in Japan is 100VAC, however the frequency is 50 or 60HZ
depending where you are in the country.

Re: Japan mains voltage

2002-02-20 Thread JRadomski

Darren,

The mains voltage in Japan is 100V +/- 10%. Half of Japan is supplied from
a 50Hz system and another half is supplied from a 60Hz system.

RE: Japan mains voltage

2002-02-20 Thread Crabb, John
According to "World Electricity Supplies" from BSI,
voltage is 200/100, 60 Hz.
We have certainly produced 100V 60 Hz "specials" for
Japan.
