Re: [Emc-users] USB and HAL question

2007-02-12 Thread Manfredi Leto
Hello,

I've started hal_joystick from terminal just typing hal_joystick, after
realtime was started because emc2 was running.

Now, I need to run hal_joystick automatically when I start emc2...is it
possible include a command for example in a .hal file?
If not, how could I make hal_joystick run when I start emc2?

thanks,

Manfredi

Yes, there is. Please see the hal_joystick manual page in emc2.1
http://linuxcnc.org/docs/2.1/html/man/man1/hal_joystick.1.html. I
don't recall if hal_joystick was included in emc 2.0.

[Emc-users] jog-scale question

2007-02-12 Thread Manfredi Leto
Hello,

why if I set a value for jog-scale from a .hal file, using for example:

setp axis.0.jog-scale 0.1

when I start EMC2 and Axis, if I use hal meter to look at axis.0.jog-scale
pin its value is 0...and external jog doesn't work. Now using Show Hal
configuration I can change the value of the pin, for example to 0.1 and now
external jog works.

Is there a way to set the jog-scale value from the .hal file so that it
remains the same after emc2 starts?

If not, how could I set the jog-scale value? maybe using PyVCP?

Many thanks,

Manfredi

I'm wondering if Lie Seng Thok wants to use EMC2 to drip feed an older

he'd like to run on an EMC2 controlled machine.

Because EMC2 runs on a fully functional computer, you can use
networking, USB sticks, and many other ways to get the GCode to the

[Emc-users] position pid loop

2007-02-12 Thread Larry Kopas

hi

I'd like to know how the position control works in emc. the pid params I
see are only for axis speed control, what I can't understand is how emc
holds the motor at a particlar position and apply opposing force if tried to
rotate. I was expecting to see pid params for position loop, but cannot
find in any ini file.

Re: [Emc-users] Via motherboard

2007-02-12 Thread Manfredi Leto
Hello

I have used a ITX (smaller than ATX) board with a VIA 800 MHz. I can say
that with the VIA CPU the system with Ubuntu and EMC2 was at its limit.
After I replaced the VIA CPU with a PIII 733 I purchased on ebay
(inexpensive...5 euro or something like that) and now the system with EMC2
run much much faster. Now I think I will replace the PIII 733 with a PIII
1000 when I will find one at very low price...

So my opinion is, if you want to buy one of these VIA based motherboard, try
at least the new CPUs more than 1 GHz.

for example, this one is a ITX with a 1.3GHz VIA CPU

http://www.mini-itx.it/product_info.php?info=p106_VIA-Epia-SP13000-LVDS.html

I think an ATX would cost less, specially if you find it on ebay.

Manfredi

Hi,

Has anyone tried one of these boards with EMC?

It's cheap and I can cram it into my controller box easily.

Hi -

I have a VIA systems board (600Mhz) running a Mesa
5i20 doing 40 to 60ipm rapids without any problems.
Ubuntu is pretty bloated as default, I removed all the
Gnome fluff and run plain old X with the Openbox
windows manager, it works great. And if it blows up,
thats only a $99.00 board that I will loose, pretty
cheap to replace considering the total cost of running
a CNC system.

Re: [Emc-users] position pid loop

2007-02-12 Thread Jeff Epler
The stepgen HAL module has a tuned feedback loop between the slow
(servo) thread and the fast (base) thread, and it also has
parameters to control the maximum acceleration and velocity. Whatever
position command you give stepgen, it issues properly-spaced steps that
track that position as closely as possible while respecting the limits
specified by the HAL parameters.

When the position command is emc's axis.X.motor-pos-cmd, stepgen can
reach the requested position every time because emc also includes code
to limit acceleration and velocity to the inifile values.

As you say, the feedback position is simply found by counting the
number of step pulses actually issued.
