Hi Dan,

looking good.

So that's my last year, compulsively building CNC machines with Ebay
steppers and drives. I was using Mach3 with windows until I got pissed
off at windows and tried out EMC2.

Probably a choice you won't regret. But I hope we'll get your oppinion on
that in a while.

snip
I am having some issues but I am slowly working them out, I think. One
big issue for me is the Ubuntu Linux file system. I don't know where all
 the EMC files are.

They are a bit scattered, but mostly because we tried to follow the way
things are done on linux.
On a debian system dpkg -L packagename, will show you each file from that
particular package.
(you'll probably want dpkg -L emc2).

I was hoping to get some pointers on customizing Axis a bit. In
Particular changing the layout and adding some more buttons.

Changing the layout can't be done without changing the code, but adding
things can be done using PyVCP
(check: http://www.linuxcnc.org/docview/2.2/html//hal_vcp.html
and http://wiki.linuxcnc.org/cgi-bin/emcinfo.pl?PyVCP)

Regards,
Alex

[Emc-users] Large Retrofit Advice

2008-03-23 Thread Tony Bussan
I am hoping that I can get some advice from those of you that have done
large scale retrofits of bigger machines. We have a Cincinnati Millicron
with tool changer that we are retrofitting with EMC2.

What motion control cards have you had good success with? Right now I am
leaning toward the Motenc-lite.

How are you handling the 5/24 volt transition between computer and machine?
Are the Motenc breakout boards good enough or is OPTO22 the only way to go?

How are you handling the massive number of I/O? I have something like 116
in and 38 out digital. I don't think I want to use parports. Is there a
generic large digital I/O PCI board I am not finding?

Has anyone done much modification to AXIS to make it more compatible with
existing physical control panels? Removing duplicate buttons and sliders
from AXIS, etc.

Thanks in advance,
Tony Bussan

Re: [Emc-users] Large Retrofit Advice

2008-03-23 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
hi Tony,

we are releasing a new motenc board that will provide servo and stepper
controls. the io are similar to motencLite with opto22 style connectors. In
addition, we are also planning fieldbus I/O support (most likely devicenet)
that will extend the i/o points to accomodate large mills. the fieldbus I/O
come in a variety of ac/dc/relay contacts. so you don't need to use opto22
style i/o boards.

[Emc-users] Jogger wheel + switches

2008-03-23 Thread amtb
Hi
I think in order to EMC2 becomes more friendly to use on the shop floor
need implement Jogger wheel.
Many times list was back to talk about jogger wheel but problem still
there. Jogger wheel is very important with switches that switch between
axis XYZAB and changes increments from 0.0001, 0.001, 0.010 and 0.100.
Any commercial or better to say real implementation of EMC2 should have
basic jogger wheel with switches.
So my question is it possible to make standard software inside of EMC2
that uses 4th connector on 5I20 and some kind standard board like MESA
Electronics made breaker board for axis motors. I think most jogger wheel
uses 6 connectors.
Thanks
aram

EMC2 has had jogwheel support for close to two years. We had the
jogwheel working on the Mazak at last year's CNC workshop.

You can use anything that counts encoder pulses - either a spare
hardware encoder counter, or a software counter plus generic digital inputs.

[Emc-users] 2 boades 5I20 on one computer problem

2008-03-23 Thread amtb
Hi
I ask before MESA Electronic about what type of connectors to 5I20 board I
should use in order to use 2 boards on one computer.
On mother board PSI connectors so close to each other that it is
physically impossible to put two boards 5I20 together.
So Peter said about special type of connectors and I forgot manufacturers
of those connectors.
Does any one remember those type connectors that MESA Electronics
recommended.
Thanks
Aram
