Re: [Emc-users] Logitech Gamepad

2008-12-07 Thread Stuart Stevenson
Gentlemen,
I have connected a wireless USB game pad to the dahlih. It worked -
but I didn't see much of a use for it on a small three axis mill.
All the buttons and levers were recognized and worked
I was able to manipulate the machine from more than 100 feet away.
(line of sight)
It is a Saitek P2900 Wireless
The configuration files are on www.mpm1.com:8080/dahlih/dahlih_testing_home
The files are for an older version of EMC2 but you should be able to
use a lot of the information
Have fun
Stuart

Unless one can find a (gameport) gamepad on ebay (there are some) all
new ones are USB and today about half are wireless.
Not being an expert of EMC or Linux I'm not sure if the wireless ones
would work or not.sure would be nice though not to be connected by a
cord. One problem would be the dependency on batteriesnot a good
thing in the middle of a milling job if they fail.

Plugging and unplugging USB devices is generally a bad idea, I think.
That causes a re-assignment of ID numbers across the entire USB
controller. I'm not sure if the higher speed bulk modes used by flash
devices are also a problem (I keep remembering that I saw issues with
kjournald on an IDE flash disk), and I think the problems people have
pointed out were all using USB storage devices.

I use a USB mouse on most systems, and even a USB keyboard on some.

What version of EMC2 are you using? (I'm assuming you're using EMC2 ...)

There is documentation on using non-consecutive axes:

You may need to specify "AXES=9", since W is normally the ninth axis.

If you still have trouble after reading that documentation, please
either include your ini file in the email, or put it on the web
somewhere (like http://pastebin.ca ) and give us a link to it.

Thanks

[Emc-users] 4 linear axes naming

2008-12-07 Thread eric carlson

Hi, I have a bridgeport conversion that I did with both quill and knee drive.
I am using the trivkins module naming the axes X,Y,Z,A
I cannot change 'A' to 'W' without the program not misbehaving (will not load)
'W' is included in trivkins... why can't I call it 'W'?

Thanks,

Eric

I am quite confident you could change the power transistors and current
sense resistors on the Gecko 201 drives and go up to 10 A/phase or so.
I don't know how much work that would be to do, probably not too hard.
It would void the warranty, of course.

[Emc-users] 4th and 5th axes

2008-12-07 Thread Ádám Novák
Hello,

Can anyone suggest me a dealer or company that produces such
2-axis-rotary-tools that the axes hang on the Z axis so that the milling
tool would rotate in two directions. I need to use this method as rotary
tables can not be used due to lack of space.

Regards,
Adam

Thanks all, I had missed that thread on 'the Zone' - I
don;t get time to trawl through it very often. I'm excited
by Marriss's latest offer on that thread though and hope
there is some way I can tap into it. I think I'll also have
a play with Emory's ideas and see if I can fry a few 3055's.

Re: [Emc-users] microstepping stepper power drive

2008-12-07 Thread Emory Smith
You should be able to substitute bigger output transistors and emitter/source
resistors for the originals. You might have to go to a lower resistance for the
resistors to "trick" the drive into not going into protection. Halving
their resistance
would allow 5 Amps from a circuit designed to limit at 2.5 Amps, etc.

If the drive uses TTL chips, there should be plenty of base drive for
the heavier
outputs. If CMOS, you might have to use Darlingtons for the outputs.
Your stock drive probably uses plastic TO-220 outputs, right?
Some 2N3055s (with proper heatsinking) would allow around 15 Amps.
Resistance divided by 6, use 2 Watt non-wirewounds in parallel to get the
power rating.
Big honkin' NEMA 56 motors would be easy for it.

hth,
Emory

Ah yes, I got all excited when that chip came out and built a 2 axis daughter
card for our Anything I/O cards (6A 50V) (the 7I41). The problem is that the
chip changes current control mode depending on whether winding current is
increasing or decreasing. While this may be appropriate for high speed
operation, it causes major current errors while stepping slowly. So we dropped
the 7I41. Allegro has a replacement the uses SPI instead of step+dir but I
lost interest. We will have a low cost step motor drive based on a DSPIC some
time next year.

I had a similar problem when I first installed Hardy and had not had
a problem with Dapper.

I don't remember all the details but I believe the protections on
the files in /dev/input/* were created with protections without
read/write access required for a non-root user.

I made a new udev rules file:
/etc/udev/rules.d/50-emc_hal_input.rules

$ cat 50-emc*
SUBSYSTEM=="input", mode="0660", group="plugdev"
KERNEL=="event*", mode="0660", group="plugdev"

With this file you can use reboot or try:

Re: [Emc-users] Logitech Gamepad

2008-12-07 Thread Jeff Epler
It looks like the wiki page is in error. The correct loadusr line is
> loadusr -W hal_input -KRAL Dual
In the other order, halcmd wouldn't wait for hal_input to finish
starting up, so a subsequent 'net' command might happen before the
hal_input pins are created; the same would go for a 'show pin' command
to see what the pins were.

Not sure if this is 100% of the problem or not, but it sure could be
part of it.

I corrected the wiki page where I found this incorrect information.

Re: [Emc-users] Logitech Gamepad

2008-12-07 Thread Len Shelton
John,

EMC did work, but the "input" module was not loading and neither the input
section nor its pins appeared in the list under hal configuration.

As I recall, /var/log/messages reported *could not find "Dual"* or whichever
of the other names and ids I tried to use.

I will be at the shop later today, and I'll copy the hal files and upload
them for review. I also cannot tell you from memory exactly which version is
on that machine. We have a half-dozen EMC2 boxes in the shop. I'll check.

I do know my hal file included:

 loadusr hal_input -W -KRAL Dual

And my ini file included:
 HALUI = halui

Then, as instructed, ran EMC to locate the pin names under hal
configuration. When I discovered it wasn't finding the device, I also tried
other words to replace "Dual" that I scraped from /proc/bus/input/devices as
per the hal_input man page.

What I did to get it to work was to follow the other example:
 loadusr hal_joystick -d /dev/input/js0 -p joypad

So basically it is not even a problem anymore, but I am curious as to why it
wouldn't work. I suppose it will never be an issue, as I wouldn't expect js0
to change unless maybe I had a second joystick type device plugged in.

What exactly is the file that hal_input parses to identify the input
devices? Because if it is reading /proc/bus/input/devices, then the parser
is broken for certain, at least on that particular version.

When you followed the tutorial exactly did EMC work and the joystick did not
work or did
EMC throw an error and not load at all?

If EMC loaded then go to Machine/Show HAL Configuration and see what the pin
names
are... your joystick might be different.

and as Steven suggests post your .hal file on pastebin.ca so we can look at
it...

It is very difficult to diagnose when you don't provide specific info...
like what you added to
your hal file, what you expected to happen, what actually happened...

Subject: [Emc-users] microstepping stepper power drive

Can anyone give me a clue as to whether or not it is
possible to increase the power handling of any of the
microstepping stepper driver circuits available on the web.
There are quite a few designs about such as the PIC
microstep project based on PIC chips but they are all
limited to about 2A per phase. I have a couple of steppers
which take about 4.2A per phase that I'd like to hang onto
my Harrison Lathe but I can't find an economical way to do
so - commercially built units are virtually all outside my
available budget at the moment but I have a large stock of
various electronic components which I could build from...

As far as I can see, the limiting factor is the current
monitoring which always seems to be tied to the output
transistors/FETs. The fact that there are no designs
published for drives handling currents in excess of 2.5A or
so makes me wonder if there is some limiting factor that I
don't know about. While I can build circuits and
troubleshoot them relatively easily (back in the day, I
built an Apple II clone using separate components and wire
wrap and it worked!!), I'm no good at designing circuits -
guess I've never just got down to learning all the maths...
been too busy making things!!

So, is there a way I could change the output transistors for
higher current devices and just fiddle around with the
values of current monitoring resistors or something??

[Emc-users] microstepping stepper power drive

2008-12-07 Thread Ian W. Wright

Best wishes,

Re: [Emc-users] Logitech Gamepad

2008-12-07 Thread John Thornton
When you followed the tutorial exactly did EMC work and the joystick did not
work or did
EMC throw an error and not load at all?

If EMC loaded then go to Machine/Show HAL Configuration and see what the pin
names
are... your joystick might be different.

and as Steven suggests post your .hal file on pastebin.ca so we can look at
it...

It is very difficult to diagnose when you don't provide specific info... like
what you added to
your hal file, what you expected to happen, what actually happened...

Re: [Emc-users] Logitech Gamepad

2008-12-07 Thread John Thornton
AFAIK it has to be a PC gamepad not an Xbox one.
