I have a long history in broadcasting with SS, much of it unpleasant
because of its tendency to gaul, freeze and require bolt breaking (3/8"
bolts) strength just so it can be replaced, anywhere up to 2000' up in the
air. So I'm not real fond of putting an SS bolt into a casting that isn't
readily replaceable. These black iron grade 12's will be just fine. They
won't be out in the weather, at least on my watch. :)

Thanks.

Cheers, Gene

   Gene,

if you can use SS, here are a few about half way down the page:
http://www.albanycountyfasteners.com/Socket_Head_Cap_Screw_6MM_A2_Stainless_Steel_p/507.htm

I haven't ordered directly from their website, but I have been
ordering 4-40, and M3x0.5 nylocks from them through Ebay, and I'm quite
satisfied with them. I've been buying bags of between 100, and 250,

Are you in Torque Mode?

refer to http://www.copleycontrols.com/motion/pdf/412.pdf

there is no tacho feedback for torque mode

there is no 'step test' for torque mode

( and step means an instant velocity command change form 0 to maximum used ,
like 0 to 8V )
no frequency is needed , the test uses one edge and a storage scope.

doesnt matter at all if you are in torque mode, set by the s2 switch from
outside the case

"""
TORQUE MODE

For transconductance:
( Iout / Vref ) = Ipeak / 10V:
1) Set S2 ON
2) Set Ref Gain fully CW
3) Set Loop Gain fully CCW.
4) To increase gain, turn Loop Gain CW. To decrease gain,
turn Ref Gain CCW.
"""
in this mode torque is purely a linear function of Vref ( Vcmd in
Fanuc-ese )

I signed a We The People petition on that just last week. I understand
that the USA and Zimbabwa are the lone holdouts, and IMO it is one of the
contributing factors to the US's descent into 3rd world status. When I

That's really cool. A lot of people have asked about a simple

been like: yeah - ought to be possible - doesn't seem too hard.

A writeup is worth a lot more than that!

While list archives are forever, it might be nice if you'd also make

Thanks!

All this one has is the std 10mm hex head and some round headed stuff that
needed at least a #3 phillips. 9/16 diameter heads on 8mm, too big in

I can use the 40's just fine, but I think the 30's might be a bit short,
but lemme go out in the morning and check the tail block for sure. To get

Another way is to invert the DIR pin output polarity. This is done by
determining which GPIO bit your X DIR signal is on and setting the
invert_output attribute of that GPIO bit.

something like:

setp hm2_[HOSTMOT2](BOARD).0.GPIO.004.invert_output true

You're right. If he THINKS the servo amps are in torque mode, but the
jumper is
actually in velocity mode, it will be quite hard to make work. The
velocity integrator
will be trying to make it run away all the time. The Copley 400-series
has a
jumper inside the case to select velocity or torque mode.

Greetings all;

Does anyone know where I can order just a few, I need 3, of the above bolt
without a $30 to $50 minimum order?

The bearing blocks for this screw are machined only for socket head bolts,
and normal 10mm hex heads do not leave room to get a wrench or socket on
them to properly tighten them.

Locally, there are no socket head metric bolts stocked at all. None, nada,

Its either that, or cut me some bushings out of 1/8" pipe & use 40mm long
bolts which I have, and get get up to 50mm long at Lowes. But that would
be my 2nd choice.

Thanks guys.

The 50mm ones - I have a whole bunch; just slightly under half the shank is

15mm straight shank (roughly measured)

send me your shipping address, and I'll put some in the mail Monday, or Tuesday

Note while this could be useful for comparison, it depends on what you set your
scale to represent. Voltage? axis velocity?, torque?
The PID setting are greatly different for each representation.
Of course even then they can be quite different.

I remember Peter pointing that out when I was building PNCconf
At the time I think he recommended axis velocity.

Re: [Emc-users] backplot setup

2013-01-27 Thread Chris Morley

You didn't mention if this was in AXIS or gladeVCP - but the answer could be
the same.
Since you are using a 5 axis machine with rotary axis there is an INI setting
to look at.
Under the [DISPLAY] heading
GEOMETRY=XYZA etc

Geometry sets how the backplot displays rotary movement.
More specifically what order the translations are done.
Beyond that I have never seen a really clear explanation of how it works,
But it's easy to try different settings.

Both AXIS and gladeVCL's HAL_gremlin use this, but I wouldn't have thought
this would give you an offset in X only.
Are you sure it's always X?

If you were talking gladeVCP I would have said this sounds like loading a
program
then touching off in X. If you don't explicitly tell HAL_gremlin that you moved
the origin,
(by reloading the plot) then it plots where it thinks the origin is, leading to
this offset showing.

Re: [Emc-users] Help, out of inputs on my parport

2013-01-27 Thread Kip
Greetings all! My shift registers seem to be working well as a cheap
and easy port expander! Apologies for how long it took me to write it
up, but we are currently in the middle of the FIRST Robotics Challenge
build season, so I'm spending almost every evening mentoring high school
students.

I've attached a schematic of the circuit used. Notice it creates 16
output and 16 input lines using only 3 output and 1 input pin on the
parallel port.

I also attached the .comp file to drive it. It count base-thread ticks
for timing. I have it configured to update every 1 ms with my system,
but this is configurable. While 1 ms is too slow for micro-stepping, it
is plenty fast enough to detect the pulses from my cooling fan
tachometers, turning pumps on and off, reading control panel buttons,
and blinking status LEDs.

The complete write-up can be found here:

http://www.shafferhouse.org/linuxcnc/LinuxCNCShiftRegisters.pdf

It goes into a lot of detail that is probably too basic for most of the
readers of this list, but please let me know if there are things you
would like me to add.

Enjoy!
-Kip

If the drives are indeed in torque mode (which is hard to reconcile with
tuning the drives step response via a potentiometer), It may be very hard to
tune a bare unloaded motor at a linuxCNC 1 KHz sample rate (~300 hz bandwidth)

No, he says he's running in torque mode, so this is probably right, for
that setup.
I'd suggest adding a tach and going to velocity mode, but if that is
hard, then you
have to tune it for torque mode. You might contact Igor Chudov, who is
using
Copley amps in torque mode with my (Pico Systems) analog interface. He
may have some suggestions.

This sounds like torque mode

This is really hard to understand if the drive is really in torque mode.
This behaviour sounds a little like a velocity mode servo that has no
tachometer feedback

That is, in torque mode, all the you can step is the motor current (and torque
is proportional to motor current) so unless you are plotting acceleration,
linuxCNC will not see anything like a step.

With steps in acceleration you should see a roughly parabolic
position, and a linearly increasing velocity.

A couple of things: If you have any significant I term, a step input will
cause 'integral windup' and overshoot. For this reason once you close the
loop in LinuxCNC you should not make step movements (or leave I at 0 until
basic tuning is OK)

Viesturs,

I have a couple of diesel powered trucks. Most of them have the plug
style block heaters that screw into the engine block to
keep it warm. Those work well.

I also have a semi tractor and installing a screw in block style heater
was near impossible due to the frame around the engine.

So I installed one of these:

http://www.amazon.com/Kats-13150-Aluminum-Circulating-Heater/dp/B000BQUUR6/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1359301989&sr=8-3&keywords=engine+heater

It works really well heating up a 855 cu in / 14 liter diesel engine
block. I have the heater mounted about in the vertical center of the
block and it somehow "pumps" the coolant around, it is not just convection.
You can here the coolant flow, it may be a steam expansion cycle of
something. I'm not sure, but it works very well.

I don't know if you can get full access to Amazon.com from your
country.. if not try a proxy server here in the US to get "local" access
and then
do a search on "engine heater". My search returned over 2000 results!
They have every sort of engine heater imaginable listed.

I use Copley 423's a lot. Tune the copley with expected load and no
linuxcnc 1st. Use maximum
command voltages of 8 to 9 Volts ( allows headroom for correction needed
when at max cmd Vltg.)
The Copley manuals tell how. Basicly use a 'battery box' like 2 pcs 9V
batteries with a pot and a switch.
Use that as the command voltage source (+/- 0 to 9V). Test with expected
load. After it gets stable, inject the maximum ( 8 to 9V) cmd using the
preset pot and the switch. This is the 'step test' ( immediate reaction
to max cmd. Measure how long it takes your system, under load, to get to
max velocity). Have the scope on the tachometer. How long it takes to
get to the max tacho value is the accleration potential of your system.
The sharpness of the corners of the ramp are how well you have it under
control ( 'stiffness'). Go for a bit of undershoot on those corners
rather than overshoot, or at most oscillation.
The Copley manual really do tell how to do this step by step. AFTER you
get the amp ready, THEN let linuxcnc send the command voltages. You will
not get the acceleration you achieved in your 'open loop' tests, expect
at most 80%. This testing is neccesary and has to be done under expected
loads. So clamp stuff onto moving joints (clamp well too, cuz this is
the time when runaways occur at first.

Tuning with no load at all might be hard or impossible. Do you have the
motors attached to the ballscrew/machine?
Full speed at 0.4V command would mean you throw away a factor 20 of dynamic
range.
I'd suggest you do something to get full speed at closer to 8 or 9 V
command - maybe lower the supply voltage to the drives, adjust the max
current, or something.

It sounds like you have two loops: one in the drive and one using linuxcnc.
It's hard to say what is going wrong without knowing more about the system.
What loop is the drive closing? with what feedback? What loop is linuxcnc
closing?

[Emc-users] Servo tuning MESA 7i48 cards

2013-01-27 Thread Marshland Engineering
I'm running Colpey servo drives but I cannot get them tuned in with
LinuxCNC.

The servo is a current drive with a +- 10 volt input.
As there is not much load on the drive so a +-0.4 volt will swing the motor
at full speed.

The manual for the drive says to supply a stepped input to it and tune the
feedback pot till the motor steps nicely without overshoot. Done this with a
1 HZ signal generator.

Now when I'm runing it with LinucCNC, I get a lot of overshoot and
eventually, if the step is big enougth, a following error.

I've tried P, I and D values varying from .05 to 5 and output voltages from
1-10 and none seem to make any real improvement.

I'm stuck.

Thanks Wallace
