[Emc-users] LCNC 2.6.4 (Release) - Replace Bundled Mesaflash utility?
Greets - I've been playing with the Wheezy/2.6.4 release on the Live ISO and intended to move it over to an older 2.4 machine while upgrading hardware in the process. (old system: Mesa 7i43) The target machine will have a Mesa 7i90 via EPP. The included samples do not run, unfortunately. Peter assisted somewhat, in that there is a typo in the 7i90.ini file where the board name needs to have a capital I, but that only gets us partway. The version of Mesaflash utility bundled with the install is 3.0.0-July which has the '--list' option still available. When executed via script or CLI, it throws a Segmentation Fault. Downloading the current ver 3.0.0 that does NOT have the '--list' option (time to change the version numbers, isn't it?) builds and executes, and successfully finds the 7i90 board attached. Apt, however still believes the old version is current, so even removing and force reloading the package won't update it. LCNC insists on using the old version when it finds it, and balks when it was force-removed. I saw an old thread on gmane about this, but it didn't appear to get resolved. I realize this is a more generic Linux question overall to some extents, but it's specific to the LCNC build: it's not how does one make the package, but WHERE should it be extracted to, made from and made to, so that LCNC uses it? The loading of the hm2_7i90 driver appears to depend on running mesaflash (according to dmesg), so there's no moving forward it seems until I can resolve this. Use this boards with a pico power supply and a 16gb dom ssd (thanks andy!), and you have a compact and eficient main control unit. This is a question for people using LCNC on larger machine tools. We have been patiently waiting for jog while paused and it does not look like we are getting it anytime soon. My question is how are others working around this? For instance I am working on a job machining gears with hardened teeth and we have to remove .250 form one face, roughing insert lasts about 2/3 of the way through the roughing program and we have to rotate the insert. Feed hold leaves us in a position too close to the part to change the insert. Our only solution is to exit program and move tool away to rotate insert and restart program from the beginning and cut air until we get back into the cut. We try to run from line but even if we call constant surface feed in our MDI spindle start the spindle runs at the cap RPM. Re: [Emc-users] Question for larger machine users of LCNC
This doesn't directly answer your question about jog-while-paused, but I'm curious about the specific use case you describe. How do you decide when to change the insert? Do you wait until it chips or starts cutting poorly? Or do you always change it at the same point because you know it won't last all the way through? If you wait for it to chip or stop cutting properly, it seems to me that it isn't good enough to simply pause, jog away, change the insert, jog back, and resume. Don't you have to actually back up in the program a bit and re-machine the area that was improperly cut? On the other hand, if you have decided to always change the insert at the 2/3 mark just to be safe, then can't you simply program the change in the g-code? At the end of a pass, rapid over to a safe spot, stop the spindle, and do the change. Then start the next pass. The loading of the hm2_7i90 driver appears to depend on running mesaflash (according to dmesg), so there's no moving forward it seems until I can resolve this. The driver does not depend on mesaflash, and works for me with the included hm2-servo/7i90.ini file (after I fixed the typo) What exact error message do you get? Re: [Emc-users] Question for larger machine users of LCNC
Honestly while I am sure there are ways to workaround that particular problem I have had many situations where a jog while paused feature would have come in very very handy. It is really something sorely missing from LinuxCNC. Hell even being able to just stop the spindle or turn off the coolant would be nice to check progress let alone being able to move tool away and inspect the work during a program. This is something that would be very useful in a multitude of operational situations. John Kasunick wrote This doesn't directly answer your question about jog-while-paused, but I'm curious about the specific use case you describe. How do you decide when to change the insert? Do you wait until it chips or starts cutting poorly? Or do you always change it at the same point because you know it won't last all the way through? We let the insert go as long as possible usually..ceramic inserts will start to notch on the interrupted cut (60-62 Rc) if we can make it all of the way through we will and let the finish tool clean it up. If you wait for it to chip or stop cutting properly, it seems to me that it isn't good enough to simply pause, jog away, change the insert, jog back, and resume. Don't you have to actually back up in the program a bit and re-machine the area that was improperly cut? Not really on roughing cuts. We always use a fresh tool on finish cuts to make sure any sins get covered up. On the other hand, if you have decided to always change the insert at the 2/3 mark just to be safe, then can't you simply program the change in the g-code? At the end of a pass, rapid over to a safe spot, stop the spindle, and do the change. Then start the next pass. See above... not always the case. In a production situation this would work in our case we are running 8 pieces of this particular job and that is a lot for us. We try to run from line but even if we call constant surface feed in our MDI spindle start the spindle runs at the cap RPM. If it is a consistent amount and predictable wear, one QD solution is to program to rough to half the amount, stop spindle, move tool, M1 to pause, change insert, S to restart, move tool back and restart cut. On a similar note, I have a lathe with a 6T Fanuc control. It will let you pause, move tool, do whatever, and restart cut, The caveat is that the tool has to be moved back to the EXACT position that you moved it from at pause. Ed. Every control (Cincinnati, Heidenhain, Fagor) we have in the shop has this ability except LCNC I have 9 Turning centers and 6 CNC mills. I understand free comes at a cost LOL...I currently have three Turning centers running LCNC and a vertical machining center in process of getting LCNC and I just bought a couple of VTL's with Fanuc 6T controls that will be retrofitted with something. I am running big work and insert and or cutter failures are common. Constant and predictable just does not come to light in our job shop environment I am sure it would in a production situation and I would gladly program around it. I am grateful to have found this software and glad we took the time tackle the learning curve as we are better off for it but as I said earlier there is a cost to pay and in our case this is one of them. Even if we could call up our spindle parameters in MDI and run from line (being very careful) it would be much better but as I pointed out in another post the G96 is for some reason ignored from MDI even though the flag does come up. Arriving at the proper setting for start from line is a matter of scanning all the code up to the restart and setting the parameters correctly. I did this for tkemc years ago but naturally the code has disappeared and I'm not at all certain I could recreate it. Basically it has to do with setting all the codes before the restart that are modal. eg. build a small program that used gcode to set the parameters, stream all the remaining code to a temp file. Cat the parameter gcode to the front of the tmp file and run as a program. Not exactly elegant but it does work. Hope you didn't get too bored reading this. Peter - dmesg dump at: http://pastebin.com/2uZJV2Gi but the core is an inconsistent Module Descriptor What led me to believe Mesaflash was important is that when I had it installed, and prior a force removal, it would load just after the RTAI[math] section and give two lines of segmentation faults. Seemed logical at the time that perhaps it was trying to perform some form of lookup (like probe_parport). May have just been coincidental. The typo I found was a capital 'I' in the BOARD= line This seems to have been fixed in the latest ISO The version of Mesaflash utility bundled with the install is 3.0.0-July which has the '--list' option still available. As I recall we usually would jog away, take care of whatever needed addressing and then kinda jog near to where it was before but never precisely where it was before and hit go and it would take care of the rest. I honestly don't remember exactly how it worked just that it worked and we used it an awful lot in a job shop environment. here is a page I found on the HAAS setup and how it works... http://atyourservice.haascnc.com/expert-tip/run-stop-jog-continue/ On Fri, Nov 21, 2014 at 11:12 AM, Eric Keller eekel...@psu.edu wrote: On Fri, Nov 21, 2014 at 11:00 AM, Pete Matos petefro...@gmail.com wrote: I had heard that machinkit has the jog while paused or was going to be using it. The typo I found was a capital 'I' in the BOARD= line This seems to have been fixed in the latest ISO The version of Mesaflash utility bundled with the install is 3.0.0-July which has the '--list' option still available. Re: [Emc-users] Question for larger machine users of LCNC
If you read that HAAS control description of how their Run, stop, jog, continue works it seems to be pretty logical to me. It simply requires the OP to after he has jogged to wherever he need to jog back to a position CLOSE to where the pause happened initially and then hit a key and the machine then takes over jogging at 5% speed to the original position. This seems like a good idea and easier to get the machine to do. You will note that it does not allow for TLO changes which while important are not super critical in my view and apparently theirs too. The changing of an insert while typically not perfect should not change the offset that much and I guess it is understood that you would not want to do this on a critical dimension of a finish pass. It would sure be nice tho. Either way just having the ability to raise the millhead and turn the spindle and coolant on and off to take a quick measurement or inspect progress would be a big deal for me. Re: [Emc-users] was larger machines now jog while paused
Jeff, Yeah I cannot imagine why you would NOT want a feed override or a spindle override slider. I use mine all the time to either carefully run thru a program at slower speed, check the approach of a toolpath to the workpiece, or just to optimize a feed or speed that has already been programmed to get a better finish etc. etc. I think on some level much of this trepidation comes from worrying about inexperienced users crashing due to these features. I completely understand their concerns but perhaps some of these more advanced features could be added yet disabled in the software if you want so you can let new users run more safe settings. The reality is that many people like us are trying to run commercial machines with LinuxCNC and are looking for MORE features not less. I realize that the software is free and dependent upon programmer types to work on it at their will and leisure. I wish I knew how to do it or I would attempt it myself. Peace Pete Most of our controls have the ability to feed override the jog speed. There has been a move to get away from this in lcnc and this is an example why we still want the option. Heading back into a cut you can have control over that speed. Not sure what is needed it seems he made a Glade VCP panel or something that allowed him to show the controls easier maybe? If all of that works as he shows is it something that is working outside of linuxCNC controls to accomplish this or does it actually interface the main system and the panel was just to make it easier to show what is going on. I really do not understand all the logistics of getting say that HAAS movement to be utilized in LinuxCNC and I am sure it is not easy but it seems that it really the way it should be to me. I think as many times as this discussion has come up since I have discovered LinuxCNC it would be something that is a higher priority. it seems like there are always people suggesting lesser options rather than tackling the problem itself. It will let you pause, move tool, do whatever, and restart cut, The caveat is that the tool has to be moved back to the EXACT position that you moved it from at pause. Sounds like exactly what LCNC users want. (And everyone with a Torchmate plasma table!) Would it be possible to have a predefined pause and move command set that could be inserted into the code on the fly, pop it in immediately after the current line being executed? Hit the pause button, the code gets inserted to interrupt the machine. It stops the cut and moves to the location to service the tooling. Hit resume and it returns to the position to execute the next line of code, while the inserted commands get removed. It wouldn't work so well for when the current line has the machine moving a long distance before the next line will execute, but for code that has a lot of short movements it could do the job. --- This email has been checked for viruses by Avast antivirus software. http://www.avast.com -- Download BIRT iHub F-Type - The Free Enterprise-Grade BIRT Server from Actuate! On 22 November 2014 01:49, Dave Cole linuxcncro...@gmail.com wrote: Is there any reason why that patch could not be reviewed by the LinuxCNC devs and then pushed to master for further testing?? Looking at the patch, it is a big change. But, it doesn't do a lot more than the offset-in-HAL approach does, in fact it ends up looking very much the same. Where it beats offset-in-HAL is that it works in axes rather than joints. This is a big improvement for non-cartesian machines, less so for anything using trivkins. In some ways I like the patch because I have thought for a long time that every axis should have an external offset input for special purposes. (temperature compensations, that sort of thing). It isn't jog-while-paused. It is a set of offset pins. It could _look_ like jog-while paused, if something else manipulated those pins in the right ways. For a trivkins machine, so could the HAL offset approach. It is easy to imagine a HAL component that offsets the joint positions, and during pause watches the jog-wheels to change those offsets. I might even write it to try out the idea. The patch is a nice start, but in some was only serves to point out that the really hard part might be persuading the system as a whole, and especially the GUIs, to send jog commands to the JWP code in pause mode. -- atp If you can't fix it, you don't own it. http://www.ifixit.com/Manifesto -- Download BIRT iHub F-Type - The Free Enterprise-Grade BIRT Server from Actuate! For the next hardware version we are planning to support resolvers (3-8Vpp ref, 1-12Vpp sin/cos) and encoders/gms (ttl / 1Vpp / 11µA) with a single interface. The current resolver only interface is a bit noisy (resolution: 12-13bit/rev, accuracy: 9-10bit/rev after sw filtering) and does not work well with non-floating signals. On the driver side we try to get rid of the ttl and analog parts whith a small controller for current / voltage measuring, pwm generation, break release, temperature control, ... It is all driven by interrupts and direct register writes, it doesn't use any Arduino libraries at all, not for PWM generation, not for analogue reading and not even for computing the arctan. (it uses an integer-only algorithm and a lookup table) http://wiki.linuxcnc.org/uploads/Resolver.pde My servo amp has a very good resolver interface, featuring 10kHz excitation with driver(8Vpp signal, to reduce noise), lowpass filter, and 12 bit resolution. included are eagle files, spice simulation, and code. It could be used to make a converter to other interfaces, or you can just use the whole project to drive your servos. It has even got a hal implementation to configure things at runtime. https://github.com/rene-dev/stmbl Rene -- atp If you can't fix it, you don't own it. http://www.ifixit.com/Manifesto -- Download BIRT iHub F-Type - The Free Enterprise-Grade BIRT Server from Actuate! Re: [Emc-users] was larger machines now jog while paused

It simply requires the OP to after he has jogged to wherever he need to jog back to a position CLOSE to where the pause happened initially and then hit a key and the machine then takes over jogging at 5% speed to the original position. I have been experimenting with the JWP from Machinekit in LinuxCNC. On the stock LinuxCNC 2.6.4 source in git I downloaded https://github.com/mhaberler/machinekit/commit/6b0aaf39b81cc6507de41b5a 74a6b0414744ea38.patch And applied it with git am -3 6b0aaf39b81cc6507de41b5a74a6b0414744ea38.patch Then recompiled. Then in a lathe config, by setting the new hal-pins motion.pause-offset-x 1 motion.pause-offset-x 1 Looks like the above line should have said z, not x ;-) motion.pause-jog-feed 1 motion.pause-offet-enable 1 I get the behaviour shown here: http://youtu.be/mSx2zIUWVzQ I suspect that this would work for you, though appreciate that what you want is something in the released software. That looks like it could be handier than sliced bread AND bottled beer. I would vote for that going into LCNC in a heartbeat. I can also see, for somebody really familiar with our gui's, a quad of buttons and an offset of that axis's display, one could then run the paused point in and out to achieve a setting that hopefully would clear the workpiece while moving in and out of the paused mode, from any place on or in the workpiece. Obviously would need to be adjusted on a per part operation basis, and probably should be saved in position.txt too. And just to save me at my years from loose nut behind the wheel mistakes, ramping the spindle slider back to 100% as it arrives back at the work position when unpaused would also be a nice touch as then it truly would be a 1 click resume. Yeah, I know, folks in hell want ice water too. But none of this is impossible now that its been done. This subject comes up about 2x annually. We wear it out and little or nothing is done. This looks like a heck of a good start! So, tell us why not? Cheers, Gene Heskett -- There are four boxes to be used in defense of liberty: soap, ballot, jury, and ammo. [Emc-users] Will a Dell Optiplex 755 work for LCNC?
I got it cheap, real cheap. Has 4 gig of PC5300 DDR2 and a Core 2 Pentium 4. Also has a low profile PCIe x16 video card. It's small enough to be mounted inside the cavernous 1990 vintage control cabinet I stripped all the original electronics out of. Most importantly it has a parallel port to which I can connect a Pico universal stepper controller. --- This email has been checked for viruses by Avast antivirus software. http://www.avast.com -- Download BIRT iHub F-Type - The Free Enterprise-Grade BIRT Server from Actuate!
