[Emc-users] Season's greetings

2020-12-25 Thread Jon Elson

Stuart,

I hope you and your family have managed to avoid the virus
and are doing well.

We mostly have, but Daniel did get the "Covid toes" about April.

Matthias has been a police officer in Topeka for about a
year now, so not that far from you.

I've attached a writeup on what has been going on with us.
How is your shop coming along? I know you were still
getting set up when I was there last, it has been

quite a while.

Merry Christmas and a happy new year!

Jon
Ann has been living with us for some time, but we have seen no sign of her
following through on the travel trailer/nomad plan, to our great relief.

Ellen is still teaching 2nd grade in the Lousiana, MO schools. She has put
in requests with some St. Louis area school districts, but no action, yet.
Her roommate, and now two of the roommate's kids have confirmed COVID.
Ellen so far has dodged that bullet, but she had to be out of work for two
weeks.

Naomi is doing doordash now, as her cleaning business in Chicago is pretty
much shut down.

Matthias has been a Topeka police officer for almost a year, now. They have
had a second baby, the two were born about 11 months apart. (We now know
these are called "Irish twins.") They are looking at buying some property
and moving out of Topeka.

Daniel transferred to the LA office of PriceWaterhouse, and has lots of
crazy stories about the COVID madness out there. Also about hopping in
his car and going to the beach for a run nearly every day. Jealous? ME?

Samuel is the last one in college, at Lindenwood.

The big news here is I bought a more modern pick and place machine from an
auction for $500 (I was the only bidder). After careful examination of the
pictures, I was pretty sure this unit was in the best condition of all the
machines in that auction. It arrived in working condition, and then stuff
started to break. I had to replace a major circuit board without being
completely sure that was the problem (but it was) and then a camera went out
and I had to replace that. Other stuff was messed up (a head had been replaced
by monkeys and they didn't realize the motor was the wrong type, and they lost
a bunch of ball bearings out of a ball spline while fooling with it.
THEN, I had to learn all the details of programming it.

Anyway, after spending about $6000 more Dollars on repair parts and accessories,
it is fully functional and I have assembled a few circuit boards with it.

Now, I have to find somebody to take my OLD pick & place machine.

I've been working remotely from WU most of the time, and go in for a few hours
about one day a week. We have too MANY Zoom calls, now, that just drone on
endlessly.

We are not going anywhere for the holidays this year, everything is just
too messy.

I must have asked that once before, as its already there in the form of
sserial_port_0=1xxx already.

And a halmeter does show the first 4 ports as having an analogin_0 thru
3. Looks like I need to net it to a scale and feed it to a near for
spindle-at_speed and the tach. But a nephew brought over some Christmas
dinner, enough for about 3 meals, so my next step is under the covers
for a nap.

Thanks Peter.

It does, in the details of setting process data modes of the
smart-serial protocol.

The point is, that this isn't something that is (or should) be
documented in the hardware manual, it is documented in the Hostmot2
driver manual.
http://linuxcnc.org/docs/2.8/html/man/man9/hostmot2.9.html#config%20modparam
(See the section on the sserial_port_N options.)

Greetings and Merry Christmas.

The 7i76 manual has mention of modes 0, 1, and 2 for reading the analog
voltages applied to the first 4 inputs.

But no place in that lengthy manual does it mention how to switch it so
this mode 1 is enabled so as to enable that ability.

The hostmot2 man page has the information

basically you set the mode with a token/value pair
in the hm2_xxx driver command line like:

sserial_port_0=23xx

(this sets sserial port 0 channel 0 to mode 2 and channel 1 to mode 3)

And it does output a 0-9.9 volt signal for a 0 to 397 HZ input on the
vfd's VO terminal. So where do I put this mysterious "mode 1" ???

Thanks Peter.

I don't think that's found on the HuanYang's. One flea clip switches the
front panels speed pot to an external pot look-a-like such as is
contained on the mesa 7i76 and probably others. Works well.

Got it, finally, my own stupidity, I measured and found a couple volts of
AC on those terminals from an internal scan, and then I grokked that it
was to interpret the FWD terminal as a "RUN" command, which is now set
at pd044=01. Then the next terminal, REV was to be seen as a reverse or
pd045=03, and now those controls work as expected from axis as long as
pd023=1, enabling the reverse.

So I won't need the hy_vfd after all. Next is to see if I can get a
useable signal from the VO terminal, one I can feed a near module for a
spindle-at-speed signal. And maybe even a SWAG to drive the tach with.
But to do that right, needs a much lower max range of the A2D's for an
7i76D input, 36.2 volts for a full scale reading of 255 is way too high.
zero to 5 volts would be much more useful. But its a step in the right
direction, just not as accurate as I'd like. That if scaled, would be 95
rpm per bit change at the very best.

But first, I have to figure out how to enable the A2D's on the first 4
inputs.

Onward and upward, and a very Merry Christmas all.

So many other open source projects wither on the vine, but

Which is one of the reasons I'm still putzing with register settings. I'm
running it, but only fwd at an LCNC set speed ATM. rev is being ignored.
Looking at the block diagram on page 12, there is no voltage on the
fwd-rev terminal when the spindle is off. There was with the old 110
volt vfd, opens at the 7i76 had +10 volts on them and sensed the ground
to enable fwd or rev. So I'm still reading thru the exceedingly fine
print for a clue as to why there is not a voltage there so the ground
from the 7i76D can be sensed. Either a wrong setting someplace, or I
have a defective vfd. Needs additional investigation but its 2 to 3
steps up a stepladder and my back's crushed discs limits the time I can
stand and balance there to 2 or so minutes at a time. But that's my
problem, not yours ;-) When I do find it, I'll mark it down in the back

[Emc-users] hy_vfd driver

2020-12-25 Thread Gene Heskett
Greetings all;

First, Merry Christmas to all.

And its white out, nothing in the air ATM but about 3" on the ground at
4AM on this special day.

Running this spindle via a usb-2 at 19.2 or thereabouts kilobaud strikes
me as a not very high priority thing, and since I have so successfully
used a slower thread on the pi running the Sheldon with all its manual
controls running in a 200hz thread, I woke up just now with the thought
that with all the data that hy_vfd has to shovel around, there is
absolutely no reason to addf it a 1 khz servo-thread, and it would be
just as happy running at 2x a second in a vfd-thread.

It will be running on a D525MW mobo, which is not a particularly speedy
mobo anyway. Decent latency but its still a slow intel atom 2 core cpu.

So like the pi, it has a shortage of cpu cycles, actually fewer than the
pi because the pi has 4 cores running at 900 khz, vs 2 at 1.4GHz for the
atom.

Thoughts? Any reason to addf it to any faster a thread than 2x a second?

Thanks all.
