Re: OSHPark and gEDA/PCB
I have sent artwork from PCB to OSHPark and received exactly what I sent
them. Problem being exactly what I sent was ... wrong. There were no
circuits on the back side due to me not paying attention to the files I was
renaming. As to OSHPark vs some of the Chinese fab houses (iTead, Seeed),
it really depends on board size. If the best you can do is 2" square, go
with the overseas fab houses. If you are after dainty boards and don't need
a boatload, go with OSHPark.
I am not thrilled about linking to this info, but,
http://letsmakerobots.com/node/37591 and
http://letsmakerobots.com/node/38709
might be of some interest. I scanned the first link and found the mention
of the bottom file not being what you want to rename, but rather, the
group1 file actually holds the image of the bottom traces. The second link
is a quick post about custom silk screen on the bottom of a board using PCB.

Way back at the start of this email, someone was talking about different
DEs. I personally have been running Bodhi linux, an Ubuntu derived distro,
for a few years. The lead Dev recently posted a blog about installing
moksha, an Enlightenment derivative, on Debian Jessie. Enlightenment does
things differently, but, it is quite light on resources. I believe
something like lxde is comparable.

Re: [Emc-users] computing max acceleration for an actuator

2015-08-27 Thread Kyle Kerr
Late to the party armed with nothing more than book smarts, may not be
enough.
If you can accurately measure time over distance, you should be able to
find relatively close max accel. Once the time over distance is constant
from point to point you go back and say 0 to 100 took 500mS and 14mm or
whatever. Then you just do the math to find acceleration.

On Thu, Aug 27, 2015, 6:47 PM Dave Cole linuxcncro...@gmail.com wrote:

If you set the max acceleration lower than
the actuator is capable of, I assume it will work fine and just take longer
to ramp up to full speed than it could in theory.

Yes. It will work fine. You want the accel limit lower than less that
what it can actually do. Years after you set this up and things get a
 little gummed up,
you don't want your actuator to be slower than what you command. That
may result in following errors and frustration.

The same is true of the max velocity.

 longer

Jerry I didnt answer your question.
to measure acceleration there's an industry standard 'step' test.
The 'step' is to apply the voltage required to achieve max velocity.
This voltage **instantly** rises from 0 to the value needed for max
  velocity.
Thats where the name 'step' comes from,
Its a square edge on a scope.

A second measurement is now needed,
Some way to determine _when_ the
  maximum velocity is actually achieved.

Old school dc motors gave us Tachos so this was easy.
I dont know what you can put together.
You could attach a voice coil to the end, I suppose.
Measure when the output voltage goes constant ( at max vel )
A scope should show a 'knee' starting at 0Volts.

But if you measure time from the 'step' until the max vel,
you have the precise acceleration _time_.

The acceleration time divide by time is the acceleration

( example .240 Sec accel time to achieve 800mm/minute velocity
is .24 sec to achieve 13.333mm/sec
  is 55.555 mm/s/s

 3.15/sec / 0.02ec = 157.5in/s/s )

I have a question about the voltage to drive a stepper motor
12 volts works but higher voltages make the motor weaker
I am building a simple stepper driver
A nema 23 2.7 amp stepper motor and 36 volt power supply
The controls are hand held, forward ,reverse, stop, and speed
I built the controls and driver using a 12 volt battery to test
Now I completed the project and am using the 36 volt supply
The motor runs at the same speed but it is so weak I can hold the
shaft and stall the motor This is also the same with 36 and 24 volt
  batteries
With a 12 volt battery I can not stall the motor
  I am using http://piclist.com/techref/io/stepper/SLAm/SLAm_bld.htm
and an Arduino I would be happy if someone would point out my
  stupidity

The chip uses a constant current setup using PWM. When you raise the
supply voltage then the trip-current is reached sooner and recovery
may take too long for the next PWM cycle.

The datasheet says that the off-time is between 7 and 12
microseconds. Your high voltage level may cause a feed-through on
the current-limiter because of the increased rising flank of the
current. This decreases the on-time vs off-time and the effective
current to the motor is reduced which results in a lower torque.

The problem may be in the physical setup, where too much noise is
propagated. You should check the wiring and use an oscilloscope to
check the signals for spikes etc..

I do not have an oscilloscope

You may have to cultivate a friend who does have one. As a scope user
myself since 1951, there is no other way to measure things where time vs
voltage or amperage needs to be measured.

and I don't think noise is the problem
I am single and it is usually pretty quiet around here :)

The noise being refered to is electrical, not acoustical and steppers,
with their built in PWM modulation in a decent driver that does regulate
current to maintain the average, is one noisy puppy electrically, which
is the sort of noise being referred to.

One more question though. After half an hour powered up on 12 volts, how
does the motors temp (its gonna be hot, use an IR thermometer) compare
with 1/2 hour powered up on 36 volts? If its smell it hot in 10
minutes, pull the plug, your drivers are not regulating the current
adequately and the motor is saturated, possibly damaging the rotors
magnetism forever If its many degrees cooler, then the driver may be
turning itself down to protect the driver. If its smart enough, most of
the lower cost drivers aren't. I have let the magic smoke out and broke
the mirrors on quite a few allegro A-3977 based drivers. I switched to
2M542's off fleabay about 5 or 6 years back, buying enough to switch
them all out with one spare for the parts drawer. Its still there, has
  not been needed.

 No IR thermometer
I ran the motor on 12 volts for about 1 hour and the chip was only barely
 warm to touch
Then I ran the motor on 36 volts for about 1 hour and the chip was only
 barely warm to touch
The 36 volt power supply is close in the same container so I disconnected
it and ran the motor on batteries
Same results the motor is very weak

Wireless connections just require a bit of research. You may need to do a
bit of incantations in the terminal, but, it is likely your wireless can be
made to work. Worst case you find a wireless adapter known to work and go
from there.

Hooking thgem up to the local network is almost a requirement as there are
often several updates to the system as a whole at 2 or 3 day intervals.

I do not of course know how your home network is setup, but I long,
decades ago, set my network up on an abitrary address someplace in the
192.168.xx.xx block. This address range is NOT allowed to go through a
router that s/b the first thing your modem, cable or DSL sees. From that
point it feeds an 8 port switch so I can have cat5 to several places, like
to this machine, and to the two machines in my tiny shop building in the
 back yard.

Setting it up can be daunting for someone used to a windows connect
directly to the modem, but I consider a router with enough memory so a
reflash with something like dd-wrt to be a basic requirement from a
security standpoint. Then it handles all the translations from your
address, and Native Address Translates (NAT) between your outside address,
and your local net, on a one way basis. Its 2 way, but with the provision
that you can initiate a connection to cnn.com and it keeps track of what
your machine asks for and allows the response from cnn.com back into your
browser. But even if cnn.com knows your address, it is only the outside
address, and attempted access by cnn.com when you did not request it, will
be refused. So its best of both worlds.

There are several people here who can guide you in doing this if
interested. Folks probably more familiar with it than I and who have
better memory than I. At 80, I think I am the senior member of this
group, and the wet ram is beginning to show the effects of being a senior
citizen and retired for a decade and change.

You won't like Wildblue at all. Unless you can get some kind of decent
price/speed with cellular, you should stick with Hughesnet. At least
if you go over you get a free renew token every month to allow you to
get back to full speed. Wildblue has nothing comparable and if you
happen to go over a week into your month of your bandwidth cap, which
is limited up and down, you will be screwed for a month and get to pay
full price for a month you couldn't even use service.

@Ian, the satellite service in the US is terribly expensive for any
kind of speed. I pay $80/month with a 475mb download cap on a 1.6 meg
