Having satisfied my curiosity now I think I will stay with Heron for a while, (9k on the same HW) until maybe some other user finds a fix. I use Lucid now on other (non realtime) machines, the difference is not important. -Original Message- From: Andy Pugh [mailto:a...@andypugh.fsnet.co.uk] Sent: den 23 november 2010 22:22 To: Enhanced Machine Controller (EMC) Subject: Re: [Emc-users] Migrating from Heron to Lucid On 23 November 2010 21:07, Lars Andersson l...@larsandersson.com wrote: Seems I'm in the wrong place (kern vs. user), this looks better (but not good) 25k isn't stellar, but is perfectly usable. Thanks, I did read that document but missed it. [Emc-users] Migrating from Heron to Lucid
Hello list, I have been using EMC2 with 8.04 now for some time on an medium old PC with and having a consistent latency below 10 000, pretty happy with it. My HW is a 3 axis mill, stepper motors, Gecko 540, Motherboard says ASRock 775i65G, 865 chipset, Pentium4 3GHz and nvidia MX400 graphics. As a consequence of bad weather and too little to do, I thought I'll give Ubuntu 10.04 a try. So put in a brand new hard disk and do a fresh install from the live USB stick. Installation went without a glitch. Good, now do a quick check on latency, is now over 200 000, not so impressive, clearly display related it jumps around when resizing the glxgears display. So I change my nvidia board to an ati radeon, this brings latency to 25 000. Tried ATI and VESA drivers, no difference. Tried the GFLRX driver but this gave me a seg fault in glxgears (libGL.0). I could not resolve this so I simply reinstalled EMC2. BTW. Using the VESA driver was a little involved. Driver vesa in xorg.conf gave me (EE) VESA: Kernel Modesetting driver in use, refusing to load https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/KernelModeSetting taught me this: Creating a file with echo radeon modeset=0 /etc/modprobe.d/radeon-kms.con And executing update-initramfs -u made it possible to load VESA. Didn't note any performance difference though. To summarize, moving from 8.04 to 10.04 brings my latency from 10 000 to 25 000, is there something more I can do? Maybe stick with 8.04 (I still have it installed) ? Any other suggestions for me to try are welcome! -- Beautiful is writing same markup. Try loading 10.04 from http://www.ubuntu.com/desktop/get-ubuntu/download then install EMC as per http://wiki.linuxcnc.org/cgi-bin/emcinfo.pl?Installing_EMC2 The 10.04 live installation wouldn't even boot my PC. The official one worked fine. (Not a media problem - simply doesn't work with my PC hardware.) My latency halved without any configuration, I've also accepted every update since. Doesn't seem to be a problem either. Steve Blackmore -- -- Beautiful is writing same markup. Internet Explorer 9 supports standards for HTML5, CSS3, SVG 1.1, ECMAScript5, and DOM L2 L3.
