And you, Peter, should be happy to know that all the 7i76 needed was a
powerdown reset, the machine seems to be running normally now. I pulled
the 3 wires hitting TB3 and wire nutted them together, made sure the
jumpers were as below, and linuxcnc -l came up running normally. So now
I have spare cards that s/b here tomorrow afternoon. Thank you for the
prompt service.

Got that all scribbled on the manuals front pages, plus disconnecting my
5 volts from TB3-21&22 so it doesn't feed back into the computer.

Field power should remain the same unless that can confuze things. Thats
a separate 15 volt supply, not switched, although it could be plugged
into the power strip that controls all the motor power. Should I? I
think the boxes line cord will reach. Maybe, its a scrap. No bets. :)

I think that covers it but dbl-check me.

I'd also point out to Peter that the scale of the drawings in the 7i76
manual needs to be expanded. The only text on page 52 thats readable is
the Mesa, all the other lines are so thin they're lost in a 1200x1200
printout. It all looks like its scaled for a readers digest sized page,
and gets lost on an 8.5x11 page. I can scale it up, but forgot to this
time.

Todd is correct, on the SainSmart board, and depending on which pdf I'm
reading, all pins 18-25 are grounded. The choice is to use a usb cable
to steal power, or a separate terminal in the corner. So jumpering the
5i25 will short things out. But, in the box I used, I'm not sure I have
room for 2 of the 7i76D's. So remove the SainSmart, and put its single
used input function someplace on the 7i76D seems to be my only choice.
But going back to the 5i25, I see I _can_ set p2 and p3 independently.
Thank you Peter! W1=down, but W2=up will power P3 only. This will
simplify the setup considerably.

So to convert the 7i76 to cable power, disconnect my separate 5 volts
from TB3-21 & 22, move W2 to rear, and on the 5i25 put W1=down, W2=up.

Now I just need enough giddyup to go do it. Can't find it. By the time I
fix us lunch, I'll be ready for a nap. Got up too early as the trash
collection trucks woke me about 4 AM.

Take care all, and thanks to Todd Z. for the reminder. Making me stop and
check is always good.

Yes, you can see page 2 of the 5I25 manual:

W1 (P2 POWER ) W2 (P3 POWER)
UP UP BREAKOUT POWER ENABLED
DOWN DOWN BREAKOUT POWER DISABLED (DEFAULT)

Note that you also need to set the 7I76/7I76D in the correct mode:

W2 left = gets 5V power from 5I25

W2 right = needs external 5V power

Non-mesa cards can never use the FPGA supplied 5V option so W1 should be down

The 7I76s 5V should come from the 5I25 = 5I25 W2 UP 7I76 W2 LEFT

You can't set the 5i25 to supply 5v to the parallel port BOB, it will
short out the 5v supply. (parallel port BOBs have those pins all
connected to ground.)

Now you have tickled my curiosity bone, Todd.

I /think/ the SainSmart 5 axis bob does give you a choice, but I've never
intentionally used it. I'll have to check the docs as I've several
copies in the garage. In any event I don't think the SainSmart bob is
smart enough to need a reset anyway. The Mesa 7i76D however does need a
full powerdown. The question then becomes how to I power the 7i76D from
the 5i25 as I don't believe I can control the power to P3 and P2
independently. So for testing, the p2 will need to be disconnected.

Yes, you can see page 2 of the 5I25 manual:

There are at least 2 ways.

You can use the command-line tools that exist in the LinuxCNC version of
the Hostmot2 repository:
https://github.com/LinuxCNC/hostmot2-firmware
(Some info in the readme)

Or you can use a more advanced version of the ISE.

Hi all

I need to set a 5i25 up as a dual lpt port. I want to replace my

Does anyone know where I can go look for the files please?

Hopefully last question. There is a load  of files there and the
names makes no logical sense to me. What file should I be looking at
please?

Is there a way to build your own bit files?

pin files have names that either contain the name of the daughter board
they match (7i76 etc) or the BoB (G540 etc) or the functions included, and
the number thereof, where sv = servo (pwm + encoder) st = stepper, rm =
resolver (7i49)

The files (in configs/hostmot2) that end in .pin are text pinout files
The names match the breakout used (7I77, G540, C11 etc)

The corresponding files that end in .bit are the matching firmware files

What breakout board are you using? (the configuration must match your brekaout
