 Les,

Is there a version named workstation? Never heard of it.

For the synaptic problem, maybe try apt-get check ?

My install experience with Sheetcam has been all positive.

Autopackage version on Ubuntu 8.0.4 worked
0.0.26 + 2.8.8 debs on Ubuntu 8.0.4 worked
0.0.24 + 2.8.7 debs on Ubuntu 6.0.6 worked
0.0.26 + 2.8.8 debs on Mepis 6.5 worked (KDE desktop btw)

A couple of notes.
The libs directory has broken symbolic links to /home/les.local.

The set-up wizard loses it's settings whenever SheetCam is closed. The only
exception is on 8.0.4 which has a Sheetcam.ini file in my home directory.
Maybe it was left there by the autopackage install?

Any specific other distros you would like tested?
Having a blast with your app. :)

**Apologies if this is a repeat post. Sometimes this mailing list is a
frustrating format.**

Is there a version called workstation? Never heard of it.

For the synaptic/apt problem maybe try apt-get check ? Forcing installs
is not ideal.

I have had zero failed Sheetcam installs so far.
Autopackage on Ubuntu 8.0.4 worked.
0.0.26 + 2.8.8 debs on the same 8.0.4 worked.
0.0.24 + 2.8.7 debs on Ubuntu 6.0.6 worked.
0.0.26 + 2.8.8 debs on Mepis 6.5 worked. (KDE Desktop btw)

A couple of issues:

Broken symbolic links to /home/les/.local littered about in libs directory.

Preferences are not saved between runs. The exception being 8.0.4 which has
a SheetCam.ini file in the home directory. Maybe this file is leftover from
the AutoPackage install?

Having a blast with this app so far :)

Hi Eric,

I replied before but it didn't seem to get through. I think I have found
a problem with the sheetcamlibs package. Try
downloading and installing the sheetcamlibs package again.

If you still get the error, open a terminal and enter the following:
sudo dpkg --force-remove-reinstreq sheetcamlibs
You will probably have to enter your password.
Hopefully that should force dpkg to delete the package.

Sorry about that,
Les

 I have just uploaded the Linux version of 0.0.24 to www.sheetcam.com.
 This release now comes as a Debian package (.deb). This covers all of the
 Debian derivatives such as Ubuntu, Knoppix etc. If you can't use .debs then
 let me know and I'll see what I can sort out. I do intend to support RPMs in
 the near future. In many distros, simply clicking on the package in your
 browser will install it.

 The Linux version comes as two packages, the libraries and the application
 files. The libraries (sheetcamlibs-2.8.7.deb) need to be installed first.
 Once they are installed you should not have to install them again for quite
 a while. The application, SheetCamTNG-0.0.24.deb will change with every
 release.

 If you already have the Autopackage version installed, here is how to
 uninstall it:
 Open a terminal. In Ubunto it is in Applications-Accessories-Terminal.
 Enter the following:
 package remove SheetCamTNG
 package remove wxlualibs
 package remove wxgtk

 If you want to remove Autopackage itself then enter:
 package remove autopackage
 package remove autopackage
 The first time removes the graphical front end, the second time removes
 Autopackage itself.

Installing sheetcamlibs-2.8.7.deb on Ubuntu 7.0.4 I get the following message:

it seems that your package contains some file included in libwxbase2.8-0 that

Note that I dont have previous version of sheetcam installed in my system.

As quickdirty solution I forced the overwrite of offending files:

dpkg --force-overwrite -i sheetcamlibs-2.8.7.deb

Finally, I run the program: wow !

Hi Les,
The library problem is always an issue. I used to produce a windows
program that had to run on many different versions of windows. I finally
ended up building statically linked executables. These contained all the
necessary code and did not depend on the users run time environment.
The distributed code is larger, but runs on a larger selection of O/S
releases. Perhaps a statically linked linux project would work for
sheetcam.

Hi Lawrence,

That is what I do for the original SheetCam. I can't do it for TNG
because the plugins need to access the libraries at the same time. The
wxWidgets docs specifically state that statically linking in this case
won't work.

I think I have found a way round the issue by having a private set of
libraries and using LD_LIBRARY_PATH to override the system libs. It is a
bit of a hack but it appears to work.

Thanks,
Les

The line I use for Ubuntu Hardy 8.04 is:

These are the latest wx libs and the ones for 7.10 work fine on 8.04.
They also have versions for different distributions of debian and

Hi Kent,

Most of the install issues have been with older versions. More recent
Linux distributions are more standardised and easier to work with.

With dialog boxes, the help is supposed to appear on the side of the
window. It works reasonably well on Windows but Linux windows tend to be
a lot more spread out so the help gets a bit big. Maybe that was one of
those good ideas that doesn't work too well in practice.

[Emc-users] SheetCam TNG V0.0.24 for Linux released

2008-06-17 Thread Leslie Newell
Hi all,

I have just uploaded the Linux version of 0.0.24 to www.sheetcam.com.
This release now comes as a Debian package (.deb). This covers all of
the Debian derivatives such as Ubuntu, Knoppix etc. If you can't use
.debs then let me know and I'll see what I can sort out. I do intend to
support RPMs in the near future. In many distros, simply clicking on the
package in your browser will install it.

The Linux version comes as two packages, the libraries and the
application files. The libraries (sheetcamlibs-2.8.7.deb) need to be
installed first. Once they are installed you should not have to install
them again for quite a while. The application, SheetCamTNG-0.0.24.deb
will change with every release.

If you already have the Autopackage version installed, here is how to
uninstall it:
Open a terminal. In Ubunto it is in Applications-Accessories-Terminal.
Enter the following:
package remove SheetCamTNG
package remove wxlualibs
package remove wxgtk

If you want to remove Autopackage itself then enter:
package remove autopackage
package remove autopackage
The first time removes the graphical front end, the second time removes
Autopackage itself.

Most users have little trouble adding menu items. Providing a png/gif is a nice

Yes, that is the route I am intending to go. Nixstaller looks to be a
good bet. It has the useful ability to automatically create rpm/deb
packages on the fly. This way the install gets integrated into your
normal package manager. I have yet to fully test it but it is looking
promising.

 Most users have little trouble adding menu items. Providing a png/gif is a
 nice
 touch.

If the .package installer works correctly it does install menu entries
and mime types. There is a logo in share/pixmaps/sheetcamlogo.png if you
want to set up a menu item manually.

 Linux is a bit of a dog's breakfast with all the various distributions. Best
 of
 luck.

Thanks. It is a real pity that installation is so hard. IMHO this needs
to be solved before Linux can take over the world ;-)

  I'm a cheerful testmule btw. :}

Thanks.

I'm not certain that we want to blame the install issues on Linux.
These kinds of things tend to be more of a distro issue. I've been
running Linux since RedHat 5.0 and have suffered through several kinds
of install stuff.

Two thoughts -- one not well liked by the community. The first is that
I'm a real believer in .deb. In fact the recent Ubuntu releases really
seem to handle this very well.

The second, a simple tarball. Most of the distributions know how to
unpack them.

I would second Ray on .deb files. Another thing to consider is that
since EMC2 is primarily supported on Ubuntu, and I would guess EMC2
users would be your main linux customers, it might may the most sense to
primarily target the same platform. A plus is that the ubuntu .deb
should install fine on Debian, and with Alien you can convert to .rpm -
although I don't know how well that works. I've successfully converted
many .rpm packages to .deb with it though.
Just my .002 cents.

[Emc-users] SheetCam TNG for Linux released

2008-06-04 Thread Leslie Newell
The moderators of this list have kindly allowed me to announce the
release of SheetCam for Linux. SheetCam is a general purpose 3.1/2D CAM
package. It was originally aimed towards routing and plasma cutting but
has now evolved into a competent milling package as well. This release
is part of a ground-up rewrite of the original Windows only SheetCam and
is still in beta so you can expect some bugs and missing features. This
release of course comes with a post processor for EMC - just go to
Options-Machine options and pick EMC from the list.

While it is in beta development it is free to use. The only restriction
is that each release will cease to function after about 30 days. If you
keep downloading the latest releases you will have a fully working free
CAM package. Once the beta development is finished, you will have to buy
a license to keep using it. I will try to keep the price as reasonable
as possible.

As I cannot afford to support packages for every Linux distro, I am
using Autopackage which should install on most reasonably up to date
distros. I have tested it on the EMC Ubuntu 8.04 and it works fine as
long as you have it installed on your hard drive. It will not work
directly from a live CD. On 6.06 there are a few issues with the
graphical installer and it does not set up menu shortcuts. I am working
on solutions to these problems.

You can download it from http://www.sheetcam.com/downloads.shtml. If
you have any probelms, let me know and I will do my best to sort them out.

Any possibility of posting a tarball, or of compiling from source? My
problem here is that Autopackage doesn't support 64 bit systems yet,
even with the ia32 compatibility libs installed.

Oddly enough, I can run the Windows version of TNG in Wine just fine! I
even had to install the vcredist_x86.exe update on your download page to
make it work... It looks very nice!

Thanks,
Matt

2008-06-04 Thread Leslie Newell
Hi Matt,

It is rather sad that it is easier to install the Windows version on
Linux than the native Linux version :-(

SheetCam is a closed source commercial app so I am afraid can't provide
the source. I have had so many problems with Autopackage that I am
investigating a different install method. Give me a few days to see if I
can get it working.
