Hi Eric, I replied before but it didn't seem to get through. I think I have found a problem with the sheetcamlibs package. Try downloading and installing the sheetcamlibs package again. If you still get the error, open a terminal and enter the following: sudo dpkg --force-remove-reinstreq sheetcamlibs You will probably have to enter your password. Hopefully that should force dpkg to delete the package. Sorry about that, Les Eric H. I am running a fresh install of Ubuntu 6.06 workstation. The only other application installed since the install of the OS was EMC. Hi Les, The library problem is always an issue. I used to produce a windows program that had to run on many different versions of windows. I finally ended up building statically linked executables. These contained all the necessary code and did not depend on the users run time environment. The distributed code is larger, but runs on a larger selection of O/S releases. Perhaps a statically linked linux project would work for sheetcam. cheers On Wed, 2008-06-18 at 14:59 +0100, Leslie Newell wrote: Hi Andrea, I had sort of expected that to happen somewhere along the line. Re: [Emc-users] SheetCam TNG V0.0.24 for Linux released
Hi Lawrence, That is what I do for the original SheetCam. I can't do it for TNG because the plugins need to access the libraries at the same time. The wxWidgets docs specifically state that statically linking in this case won't work. I think I have found a way round the issue by having a private set of libraries and using LD_LIBRARY_PATH to override the system libs. It is a bit of a hack but it appears to work. Thanks, Les Lawrence Glaister wrote: Hi Les, The library problem is always an issue. I used to produce a windows program that had to run on many different versions of windows. Les: It's interesting to see the problems some are running into. Starting with a fresh copy of Ubuntu 8.04LTS, I installed SheetCam TNG V0.0.23 last week using the autopackage. No problem. Re: [Emc-users] SheetCam TNG V0.0.24 for Linux released
Hi Kent, Most of the install issues have been with older versions. More recent Linux distributions are more standardised and easier to work with. With dialog boxes, the help is supposed to appear on the side of the window. It works reasonably well on Windows but Linux windows tend to be a lot more spread out so the help gets a bit big. Maybe that was one of those good ideas that doesn't work too well in practice. Les Kent A. Reed wrote: Les: It's interesting to see the problems some are running into. [Emc-users] SheetCam TNG V0.0.24 for Linux released
Hi all, I have just uploaded the Linux version of 0.0.24 to www.sheetcam.com. This release now comes as a Debian package (.deb). This covers all of the Debian derivatives such as Ubuntu, Knoppix etc. If you can't use .debs then let me know and I'll see what I can sort out. I do intend to support RPMs in the near future. In many distros, simply clicking on the package in your browser will install it. The Linux version comes as two packages, the libraries and the application files. The libraries (sheetcamlibs-2.8.7.deb) need to be installed first. Once they are installed you should not have to install them again for quite a while. The application, SheetCamTNG-0.0.24.deb will change with every release. If you already have the Autopackage version installed, here is how to uninstall it: Open a terminal. In Ubunto it is in Applications-Accessories-Terminal. Enter the following: package remove SheetCamTNG package remove wxlualibs package remove wxgtk If you want to remove Autopackage itself then enter: package remove autopackage package remove autopackage The first time removes the graphical front end, the second time removes Autopackage itself. If used incorrectly autopackage installs can go pear shaped. Very. Yes. I am finding that out the hard way :-( .run/.sh/.bin have worked well here. I don't know how difficult this might be. Yes, that is the route I am intending to go. Nixstaller looks to be a good bet. It has the useful ability to automatically create rpm/deb packages on the fly. This way the install gets integrated into your normal package manager. I have yet to fully test it but it is looking promising. Most users have little trouble adding menu items. Providing a png/gif is a nice touch. If the .package installer works correctly it does install menu entries and mime types. [Emc-users] SheetCam TNG for Linux released
The moderators of this list have kindly allowed me to announce the release of SheetCam for Linux. SheetCam is a general purpose 3.1/2D CAM package. It was originally aimed towards routing and plasma cutting but has now evolved into a competent milling package as well. This release is part of a ground-up rewrite of the original Windows only SheetCam and is still in beta so you can expect some bugs and missing features. This release of course comes with a post processor for EMC - just go to Options-Machine options and pick EMC from the list. While it is in beta development it is free to use. The only restriction is that each release will cease to function after about 30 days. If you keep downloading the latest releases you will have a fully working free CAM package. Once the beta development is finished, you will have to buy a license to keep using it. I will try to keep the price as reasonable as possible. As I cannot afford to support packages for every Linux distro, I am using Autopackage which should install on most reasonably up to date distros. I have tested it on the EMC Ubuntu 8.04 and it works fine as long as you have it installed on your hard drive. It will not work directly from a live CD. On 6.06 there are a few issues with the graphical installer and it does not set up menu shortcuts. I am working on solutions to these problems. You can download it from http://www.sheetcam.com/downloads.shtml. If you have any probelms, let me know and I will do my best to sort them out. Les - Check out the new SourceForge.net Marketplace.
