[Emc-users] USB KVM switches

2012-09-09 Thread Kent A. Reed
Gentle persons:

Running remote desktops is fun but sometimes nothing less than
connecting directly to a computer will do.

For years I have used a 4-port PS/2 Belkin OmniCube to switch my KVM
between various boxes (computers and servers under/beside the desk;
naked boards on the desk; you get the idea). The Belkin's hot key
feature let me switch ports from the keyboard (sequential
ScrollLock-ScrollLock-port#) and I could park the switch itself out of
sight.

I recently purchased a Trendnet TK-409 4-port USB KVM/Audio switch to
replace the Belkin and get me out of PS/2-USB adapter hell, not to
mention eliminating some redundant speakers.

Everything about this product was right (including its price, US$60) and
it works BUT after the fact I've discovered its hot key function seems
to be inoperative when connected to a Linux system (Ubuntu or Debian, at
least). Using the hot key sequence I can switch between ports
connected to MS Windows systems or from one of them to a port connected
to a Linux system but not vice versa. I have to use the port-selector
buttons on the case to switch from a Unix system.

Bummer. The connector arrangement on all four sides of the case is
compact but makes it extremely inconvenient to place the Trendnet
KVM-switch near the front of my desk so I can reach its buttons.

Why didn't I just buy another Belkin? The models I'm aware of cost more
than the computers and motherboards I'm running.

Does anyone have a suggestion for an under-US$100 alternative you know
will hot-key switch to/from Linux systems?

Regards,
Kent

It seems NumLock can also serve as a hotkey, which I would *not* have
expected in the least, or that you can work around the problem by
switching to a console, rather than the GUI.

Now, as to how a PC swallows keystrokes from a USB keyboard that's
plugged into a KVM switch *upstream* of the PC, I have no idea...

I happened onto the console vs GUI gag right after I posted.

NumLock works for me from the GUI. Thanks, Ed, for doing what I should
have done.

And I'm the guy who constantly mutters Google is your friend.
