Gentle persons, (contributed by K. Reed)

Please let's not get carried away, many people have contributed enormous
time and effort and have done so silently. To take the trouble and write
all the information of a retrofit into a single site is a lot of work but
for many of us on the fringes it is really valuable information in a single
place. I'm sure that most contributors will simply get a warm and fuzzy
feeling when they see some of their work being used and be happy with that.
While attributions are nice and a courtesy (necessary) we need to remember
that the person who wrote these pages is not English speaking and I am sure
that he would gladly acknowledge the origins but given that most of this was
done over a period of time I am sure he forgot (like some of us do) where he
found it all.

Groeten,
Bellisimo!

Something that should not be ignored, ever.

Ok, my view is pretty simple. If you post anything on the Internet it will
be used/slashed/copied. If you can't afford a lawyer get used to it. How
many of the copy rats cares about the license? Very few if not none. I
watermarked images before but it took too much time, I write text on my
tech blogs and I know they are being copied. What can I do about it? Not
much, except not posting at all. I share because i believe in it so I will
not stop.

Do I post my content with a license? Not really, there's a note on the side
that says you're free to link the images. i didn't change it when I skipped
the water marking. I don't think that matters at all.
If I post a code snippet or hardware related inventions I always go for
the WTFPL license. Why? Because I'm probably not first doing and it _will_
be copied. On the other hand, if I copy a text I always link back or refer
to the originating location and i try to tell the author as well. If the
link goes rotten I have at least listed where it really came from.

I agree that the author of the write up should have linked back or referred
to the original author though. I didn't know that much was copied except
for the LinuxCNC sites which is obviously copied, though there are some
useful chapters written about the machine itself and there are few write
ups about retro's.

 Amazingly well written.

If ripping someone's blog posts in their entirety counts as flattery,
then I'm honored by their LinuxCNC Touch Probe writeups: items 1, 3, and
4 in that section seemed *very* familiar. [grin]

Compare:
http://www.vdwalle.com/Norte/EMC2%20%20Ugliest%20Tool%20Length%20Probe%20Station.htm

with:

http://softsolder.com/2010/04/14/emc2-ugliest-tool-length-probe-station-ever/

On the other paw, link rot being what it is, that's a good way to ensure
they've got the information where they need it, when they need it.

A citation in keeping with the Creative Commons license for my blog
content would have been a nice touch, though...
