--empyre- soft-skinned space--Hi Sergio,
At risk of influencing (contaminating) your response to Ian's work, Ian
wrote the following to me when I followed up with him:

"I borrowed the title alone - the book was in an airb that we rented when
we first moved to nyc in 2014"

I'd be curious to hear your thoughts on this relation between the work and
Heidegger's conference!

Best,
Dan

Re: [-empyre-] Artwork #15: Liat Berdugo and Emily Martinez - Making You, Making Others

2018-07-30 Thread Lee Tusman
--empyre- soft-skinned space--Yes! I am stressed! Yes I am overwhelmed! Yes I could use more 'me time!'

On first viewing, my brain flags behind my ability to comprehend what's
going on. I thought the script was written with machine learning possibly,
to be performed or voiced by a human.
With more reflection, I realize that is sort of correct. The 'spokesperson'
is announcing how to MAKE YOURSELF a "ghost, get hard, get in the mood, get
more energy, get nightmares, get over a guy, get out of bed to workout" and
hundreds more topics, probably as a result of the top Google search results
for the initial phrase. And those results are being fed/delivered to the
spokesmodel. From here, even thought I understand the process, and so I'd
imagine my brain would shut off, instead I find myself anticipating what
might come next. Blandness mixes with confusion and serendipitous results.
The matching images are even stranger and just as compelling: a google
image search soup of How To article images, promotional banners, stock
images, Disney character images, models, pop stars and kittens. By the time
we get near the end of the alphabet, I'm anticipating the end but not
wanting it to arrive. How to make yourself a zombie. How to make yourself
zone out. Yes.

The artists describe their project as promotional video / performance
collaboration between an algorithm, a pair of artists, and a
gig-economy-spokesperson-for-hire. They're interested in how art can be
shaped in our current global economy and how is labor shifted. These are of
course huge topics, but the use of these arenas as tools for commentary but
also as tools for critical practice point to a fruitful new approach and
genre(s).

Re: [-empyre-] Invitation to respond

2018-07-30 Thread Aviva Rahmani
--empyre- soft-skinned space--
I am awkwardly responding because I didn't look carefully at most of the works.
But I did respond strongly to the question about curating in this context. It
seems to me that framing is a critical question in any curating, and in this
frame, I am relatively uninterested in the work per se but very interested in
how the work evokes a flow of discourse about matters that interest me, ie.,
systems thinking while systems collapse. For example, I think that's why the
thread on mycellae had such legs. So, yes, please, do clarify the thinking
behind the curating and its relationship to this frame.

[-empyre-] Invitation to respond

2018-07-30 Thread Daniel Lichtman
--empyre- soft-skinned space--Hi Empyre list,

As we’re in the last days of this month’s program, I wanted to invite
anyone from the list to respond to any of the posted artworks. As you can
see, responses can be quick and intuitive if you like—take the bullet point
format as permission to reflect on the works piecemeal and associatively.

Dear Daniel

thanks for this month's listing of art works... it does provide an
interesting format of reviewing artworks online.

i cannot help to come in and ask some simple questions...

what is your criteria in the artists you selected for viewing their
works? in your curation of these series of works, what would be your
curatorial summing up after a month of reflections (in quite a coherent
style of posting remarks) posted by accidental reviewers?

thanks much

Hi Sergio,

I just wrote Ian Giles to ask if the title of his work comes from
Heidegger's conference about language and he confirmed that yes, it does.

In the spirit of this month's format, would you like to respond about
what relation you see, or don't see, between the work and Heidegger?

Best wishes,
Dan

Re: [-empyre-] Artwork #16: Hans Diernberger - Hundstein

2018-07-30 Thread Robert R
--empyre- soft-skinned space--A lone woman climbing a mountain. She stops occasionally (e.g. at 1:11) to
rest and drink.

Through the wash of thumbnails that Vimeo picks, we get a timeline of her
walk. Why this walk? This red poncho?

The performance belongs first to the camera and secondly to a body.

Could this be an elegy to the material constraints of image production? A
take two hours and forty-eight minutes long, in 2010 (when this was shot)
was on the edge of being remarkable. The peak, when the woman arrives at
1:34, is much the same.

In eight years prior, a two-hour take was a spectacle: In The Russian Ark
(2002), a single traveling shot through the Hermitage in St Petersburg
attempted to bend the conventions of film grammar, requiring the
daisy-chaining of BOTH hard drives and bodies. This sketched out a new
sacred for cinema that survived about three years under the onslaught of
new sensors and codecs (e.g. the Red, The GoPro).

Though Hundestein reduces the daisy chain of the Russian Ark to a single
body and a camera, might some of the grandiosity be preserved?

Who has the bandwidth to know??
