Hi Susan,

it should not, but to make sure, please upgrade enigmail on both
computers to the current version, then export, transfer and import.

If that doesn't work out, please report back with some logging
(which can be enabled in Enigmail preferences, you may need to
enable expert settings there to see the debugging tab). After
enabling logging, restart Enigmail, then do the import and avvess
log in Enigmail->debugging, you may save it there. Prior to
posting your log publicly, make sure to sanitize sensitive data, or
send it to one of us (Patrick, Ludwig, me) directly.

Thanks so much - I have tried this and it says: error - your settings
could not be applied. Does it matter how I save it on my old computer?

Thanks

Yes. Enigmail has an Backup and Restore feature. It not only transfers
keys, but also all settings. On the old machine, go to Enigmail ->
Preferences. Select the "Backup/Restore" Tab on the right. Push "Export
Settings and Keys". Select a file. You might be asked to enter the
passphrase of your private key(s).

Transfer this file to the new computer. There, go to Enigmail ->
Preferences. Select the "Backup/Restore" Tab on the right. Push "Restore
Settings and Keys". Select the transferred file. You're done.

You may have to select your old key pair to be used for your mail account.

[Enigmail] how do I get an old PGP key back after a new one has been generated?

2016-09-30 Thread Susan Hawley
Hi there

I recently had my Thunderbird moved from a PC to a Mac and in the
process of installing enigmail on the Mac version of Thunderbird it
generated a new PGP key. This means I cannot now access any of my old
encrypted emails.

Do anyone know how I could reinstall my old PGP key?

Thanks

Sue
