Small correction here: you get for any account an own key pair or an
available key pair is used, if key size is sufficient (e.g.,
>=RSA-2048). This is to avoid easy correlation by public key; so every
account is considered a new identity, so e.g.:

anonym...@hacktivism.ch would be an identity as well as
hernani@pep.foundation is one.

They would get distinct key pairs generated by default.

As for how KeySync looks, see this:

https://www.pep.security/docs/general_information.html#sync

And yes, p≡p for Thunderbird has KeySync working: you can sync your
devices with other TB instances, with Android, iOS and Outlook devices,
if you use them with a common email address.

Again, please read the pEp documentation, or ask the pEp people. I'm not
affiliated to pEp, so I won't answer this.

> 2) Can you explain the differences between pEp junior and classic modes?

In Junior mode, there is no visible key management, and almost no
possibility to configure anything. You automatically get a key for all
your accounts, and encryption is done automatically whenever possible.
You don't need to care for it in most ways. Key verfication is done via
a handshake that uses trust words instead of fingerprints. In theory,
there would be key synchronization across devices, but that was not
finished in the pEp engine for Enigmail (AFAIK, it's now available in
pEp). The UI is different than Enigmail.

Thanks for the explanation of how pEp is connected to this. I do have a
few other questions that hopefully you will answer.

1) What does the pEp addon do in addition to or better than the built in
OpenPGP? In other words what are the advantages to installing this
add-on over the built in support?

2) Can you explain the differences between pEp junior and classic modes?

I didn't really see these answered in the FAQ

The main idea of pEp is to provide message security without bothering
the user as much as possible. User should not need to deal with key
management and should not need to care to enable encryption manually.

If you want to know what pEp is, then read the following:
https://www.pep.security/en/faq/

Enigmail 2.0 and 2.1 contains a pEp Junior Mode. In this mode, Enigmail
uses the pEp engine for crypto-operations, and the user interface is
reduced to a very small set of security indicators and dialogs.

As Enigmail will not support TB 78, the pEp developers decided to create
their own add-on from scratch. The add-on is the quasi-continuation of
the pEp Junior Mode. Those who use Enigmail in the pEp Junior Mode are
offered to move to that new pEp for Thunderbird addon instead of being
migrated to OpenPGP in Thunderbird.

Won't and can't exist. Please stop asking.

We've given the reasons many, many times. Originally, the Thunderbird
user interface was done using a Mozilla technology called XPCOM.
Mozilla has since abandoned XPCOM; moving forward, all extensions have
to be written as WebExtensions.

So all the XPCOM in Enigmail, the stuff that's accumulated over almost
twenty years of development? None of it works any more.

Enigmail cannot be ported to TB78. We would have to literally start
over rewriting the user interface in WebExtension. The finished product
would not be Enigmail as you've come to know it: it would be something
completely new and different.

If you want to develop your own Enigmail successor as a WebExtension,
knock yourself out. But please don't call it Enigmail. :)

Thunderbird 78.2.1 with OpenPGP enabled has been released now. According
 to the release notes:

Thunderbird version 78.2.1 is only offered as direct download from
https://thunderbird.net and *not* as an upgrade from Thunderbird version
68 or earlier. A future release will provide updates from earlier
versions. Automatic updates are available for users already running
 version 78.0 or higher.

have an add-on. I'm not trying to be confrontational but honestly

This add-on is for automatic email encryption, creating a key pair for
each account you configure and/or importing secret and public keys from
your Enigmail settings, be that for "Junior" or "classic" Enigmail users.

As a special feature, it also to easily synchronize your secret keys
among your devices, if they're using p≡p and a common email address.

The philosophy of pEp is different than the one of Thunderbird. It's
perfectly legitimate that there's more than one solution for encryption.

The Enigmail migrator in TB 78 is only for users of the classical mode

And this is now also prepared in Enigmail for TB 68.

There's an updater on the desktop level, which will tell you when there

Before you attempt the migration, please ensure you're using Enigmail

If you had previously attempted to migrate and ran into a failure, then

Select that, a tab opens, which contains a button "Start Migration Now".

Thunderbird 78.2.1 contains a last minute change, which causes the
migration from Enigmail to fail.

We're currently discussing how to best fix this.

If you are still using Thunderbird 68 and Enigmail, please continue to
wait with updating.

The fix to the migration is tracked at

Patrick, it would be great if you could help us by releasing an updated
Enigmail 2.2.x to fix this issue, I've sent you private mail with the
fix that works for me.

Thanks and Regards
Kai

JFYI:

p≡p for Thunderbird, in turn, will become available by tomorrow, August
31st, and work--as Patrick already said--with TB68 and TB78.

See also Twitter thread on that:

https://twitter.com/pEpFoundation/status/1300021082481741824

It'll not use GnuPG anymore or RNP as OpenPGP backend as shipped by
Mozilla Thunderbird, but Sequoia PGP, our own implementation; written in
Rust: https://sequoia-pgp.org/

An audit of the p≡p engine core and also Sequoia is being conducted.

Thunderbird 78.2.1 with OpenPGP enabled has been released now. According

https://thunderbird.net and *not* as an upgrade from Thunderbird version
68 or earlier. A future release will provide updates from earlier
versions. Automatic updates are available for users already running

I'm confused. I'm using TB v 68.11.0 (64 bit) for Windows 10 and it
reports as the latest. Have i missed a large series of upgrades?

You haven't.

Although Thunderbird 78 was released two months ago, we have recommended
that all Enigmail users should continue to use Thunderbird 68 for
another while.

The reason for waiting is: Thunderbird 78 can no longer be used with
Enigmail. Instead, Thunderbird 78 will have integrated support for
OpenPGP. However, that new code wasn't ready yet, so we have recommended
that users wait.

For this reason, we have not yet enabled automatic updates from 68 to 78.

Please continue to wait until Thunderbird 68 will automatically suggest
you to upgrade to 78.

Please also see my other email about how Thunderbird 78 will behave
differently than Enigmail.

Kai
