In e16 I could make a window big enough to see part of
the window in a desktop and the other part in another
desktop. I can't do that in e17, is that configurable
or is it not implemented?. In case it's not
 implemented, will it ever be?.

I hate this feature of E16. I ever asked me why someone need this.
I thought this is a bug. E16 seems sometimes to do this wrong. For
example sometimes a mplayer window goes out of one desktop if I
maximize it and kile has also some strange behave with dialog windows
that extend over two desktops. And some image viewers open extended
over multible desktops if the image is huge. I expect from a window
manager to open each window only on a single desktop. Perhaps resizing
later about two desktops should be possible. - Only my opinion! ;-)

Well I am for my part actually quite lost with WMs that doesn't
implement this behavior. Because for me, virtual desktops are really
spatially connected, and if a window is partly overlapping on one side
of the screen, it is just natural to find the hidden part on the related
other virtual desktop. Just as it can be seen in the pagers. This really
helps to see the global desktop as larger that the one can be seen at
the same time on the screen, rather than only seeing a succession of
unconnected several desktops. Thus, I find it just more easy to navigate
through the desktops by moving up, right, etc. If you just don't like
this behavior, E16 also implement multiple desktop rather than virtual
desktop ;-).

Maybe this preference is caused by the fact that I used Unix environment
with fvwm before using MS-Windows or MacOS. By the way, there is still a
behavior of fvwm related to this that I find to be lacking in E: the
possibility to center the screen everywhere in the virtual desktop, and
not only to move it by an integer number of screen sizes. Useful, to
just have a glimpse at what happen at your right without losing what
happens in front of you.

actually e17's pagers dont show the overlap - they clip to the desktop in the
pager as well as the real desktop - the reason e17 doesnt do this is as windows
are never actually moved they stay where they are and are hidden/shown. to get
what you want means a major change in code for a very dubiously useful feature
and well - for now, wont be in e17 :) (dubious in terms of - theres 2 schools
fo though - both conflicting, and making it an option isnt that trivial and
there are much more important fish to fry atm :) ) :)

[e-users] Engage module question(s)

2005-10-26 Thread Liliegren Daniel
Hi all,

Time again for another noob-question (I'm seriously thinking about making a E17
noob website in the future where questions like this one can be answered, but
anyway):

Is there a way (yet :-) to make the module version of Engage:

1. Autohide itself (compare with Windows taskbar that will rase when the mouse
pointer is dragged as far down as possible on the workspace and you'll get the
idéa)?
2. Always be on top (when raised/visible)?

If the above functions are possible it would greatly improve functionality,
hence making Engage as usable as the Apple Dock which would be very nice. :-)

Without the above functionality it is not so easy to work with maximized
windows, which I would like to do from time to time.

Best regards,
Daniel

AFAIK this is not yet possible.

This will not be possible until E18, since there's no true transparency support.

[e-users] why entrance does not source /etc/X11/Xsession.d/ ?

sourced automatically.

My question is: how to make entrance source that script or
How do I pass some X settings to e17 when logging in?

Most probably because gdm and kdm were patched by debian to source
/etc/X11/Xsession.d/. I'm using gentoo, and there's no such directory here.

Re: [e-users] Window across multiple desktops

2005-10-26 Thread Alejandro Salas
That's very sad :-(... And just to know, In e16 there
are Desktops and Virtual Desktops, why isn't there
such a distinction in e17, I guess It's easier to
focus in just one, but I was still wondering.

I think that the possibility to resize a window so
that it spans several virtual desktops is a great
feature, and I know I'm not the only one who thinks
that; of course I understand that there are other
priorities, but I think It should be configurable in
the future. Have you ever worked with a delimited file
with many fields?, or made a query in mysql in a shell
from a table with a zillion fields?. These are only
two of the uses I make of that feature in e16.

Another question I wanted to ask, in e16 when changing
desktops I could see the windows fly/slide as if I
were really moving from one desktop to the other, is
that effect going to be implemented in e17?.

Thanks again

As I said before on IRC channel, I found enough time to continue
maintain that project.

So, catch the new release!
(sorry, I don't merge it with any patches for now, except to one which
that fixes module architecture).

Note that now it hosted on another site :)

http://paq.osdn.org.ua/~davinchi/

8a7c41a6fcdfc23ea31631b66199b59e evolume-0.0.11.tar.bz2

New Features:
1. Now multi-mixers system should be supported (haven't tested yet, so,
if you can - write to me or better contact on Jabber ID)
2. True mute now supported. Really needed different
volume_bar_drag_mute image.
3. Can compiled with CFLAGS='-W -Wall -Werror' with gcc-3.3.3.

PS:
Note: funny message at end of ./configure script output, help me, if you
can :)
