Re: [e-users] E17 has advantages BUT [ Menu font size ??? ]

2009-02-20 Thread Stafford Horne
A while back I did implement relative sizing for all fonts. Including
menu fonts.

1. Goto Look-Fonts
2. Make sure you are in 'basic' mode (Bottom Right)
3. Click and enable Enable Custom Font Classes
4. Select a font you like (I uses Sans)
5. Select a relative size (Normal, Big, Really Big, etc)
6. Apply

On my system all font sizes are applied right away, no restart required.

 Well thanks for the quick response Carston. But as I said I _TRIED_ to
 use the scaling option. But I'm not sure I understand the effect that any
 particular setting in the gui tool is supposed to have... And when I
 blindly tried one change after another I eventually got _SOME_ results.
 The only thing that I saw get bigger was the text labeled icons that
 scroll sideways across the top of the settings panel. It appeared to
 have NO effect on any other font in or out of the settings panel...

 1. go to advanced.
 2. enable custom scaling factor
 3. change personal scaling factor.

 the minumum and maximum sliders will limit the actual effect of the personal
 scaling factor to within these values.

   (Yes I used restart to punctuate each change I attempted to
   make... Unnh! By FULL restart do you mean completely
   shutting down the server as in practically rebooting? Or
   should E's marvelous restart function do it?)

 no - just restart e (ctrl+alt+end will do the trick - or the menu option).

 Actually I doubt I'd be happy with dpi based scaling solutions anyway.
 IF they worked wouldn't they also make all my already large print
 application settings (like Konsole font sizes) become even BIGGER???

 no. e's scaling is its own. it has nothing to do with gtk or qt - it does
 affect elementary though - but elementary will then match e's scaling and look
 like it fits :) e can caluclate the scaling factor it from dpi, leave it alone
 (leave at 1.0) or take a personal scaling factor you choose (and it will limit
 auto and manual scaling values between min and max scale values).

 I hate to change all those fonts back to fine print as then every time
 I wind up booting kde I'd have to change them back again...

 Incidentally I don't really think my font size needs are overly large.
 I mean If I use the kernel option vga=normal the default font size on
 the virtual consoles (such as you likely get with ctrl+alt+Fkey)
 are always just about right. I note: that before gui designers decided
 that everyone should have the vision of a hawk this was a NORMAL text
 size...)

 that depends on the size of your monitor. 80x25 chars on a 10 netbook is
 vastly different to my 27 desktop.

 nb - a font that size would just offend me so badly i'd instantly use some
 other software :) just out of the principle of wasting my screen space so
 badly! :)

 remember - the point here is that 1 size does NOT fit all. where u think a
 totally outrageously massive font is good - i think it wastes my screen and
 time as i now have to scroll all day. the scale settings are there to scale
 not
 just to a dpi - but to adjust for a users sight and sizing preferences. really
 dpi is a misnoma. it's wrong to scale to dpi. you need to scale to VISUAL
 size. dpi is simply the physical size. a 50 screen is the same visual size as
 a 25 screen - if its 2x as far away, but its dpi is half of the 25 screen.
 you'd want the same scaling factor on both. it depends on dpi AND how far it
 is
 from you AND on your visual acuity. the machine can only perhaps figure out
 DPI
 based on monitor ddc info and resolution. the rest is unknown, thus a scaling
 factor for users to set. :)

 I was really hoping that somewhere there was a configuration option to
 select such things as what fonts are used in the menus, and pop-up gui
 tools...

 there is - scale settings. everything scales that is set to. of course if you
 sue some other theme or a distribution and packages that use an altered theme

The clearlook theme seems to be missing the textclass definitions for different
parts. This would be really easy to fix. If you want to learn some edje and
contribute I suggest decompiling clearlooks and find places which are missing
textclasses.

You can compare with the default theme in e/data/themes. For example:
From default_border.edc

 part {
 name:   title2;
 type:   TEXT;
 mouse_events:   0;
 description {
state: default 0.0;
align: 1.0 0.0;
visible: 0;
rel1 {
   relative: 0.0  0.0;
   offset:   07;
}
rel2 {
   relative: 0.0  0.0;
   offset:   07;
}
text {
   text_source:   e.text.title;
   source:e.text.title;
   min:   0 1;
   text_class:title_bar;
}
 }

We can see this is a part of type TEXT, that means it can have a text_class.
Just find all of the TEXT parts in clearlooks and make sure that they have
text_class which matches bling.

Remember, all themes only have a limited number of text classes to choose from.
 These are listed in src/bin/e_int_config_fonts.c.

Have Fun,

I believe raster said before that you should just use fontconfig families like
sans to configure your fonts. There should be no reason to ever rebuild the
edje file just to change fonts. We DO have other solutions for changing fonts.

If you do not want to use fontconfig you can use font fallbacks. I have
written a small tutorial on font fallbacks here:

If you have the bytecode option in the configuration dialog that means that
evas does have bytecode hinting available. The available options in the dialog
come from the evas API IIRC.

Now, why don't you see any difference? Do you have an LCD monitor? If you are
using a CRT it will be pretty difficult to tell the difference because CRTs are
usually a bit fuzzy already and therefore have (BUILD IN) hinting :) .

If you do have an LCD. then the fonts will become a little more clear/fuzzy
when changing the hinting option. The best hinting for you usually depends on
your hardware and personal preference.

[e-users] Fw: compiling ecore on a system running 2.4.x kernel

2006-08-17 Thread Stafford Horne
Hello,

I had this conversation on the E Users list and got no response. Basically
some users are complaining that ecore doesn't build on some systems unless you
disable ecore-fb.

My opinion is that we should disable ecore-fb by default until someone fixes
the ecore-fb section of the configure.in to correctly detect the linux event
header files.

I have already made the code change on my system and I am ready to commit it.
Does anyone have any objections? Is anyone going to have serious problems if I
disable ecore-fb by default?

   the search path configuration dialog was not writing its config changes
out to disk. This was an easy fix.

However, the wallpaper settings dialog does not actually search these

This should be ok now. I make the buttons less wide, it should now give more
space for the text on the left.

Re: [e-users] -font-available

2006-05-26 Thread Stafford Horne
Hi,

The -font-available-list command for e_remote now lists the fontconfig fonts.
Fontconfig fonts are not supposed to be used in the font fallbacks.

I have an small page to explain about the font configuration in e17 here:
http://shorne.homelinux.com/wordpress/?page_id=50

Also you can now use the font configuration dialog to configure all of your
fonts. Just goto: Left Click Desktop Menu | Configuration | Configuration Panel
| Fonts. In the font class configuration you can use the Fontconfig font names
like Serif and Sans. That would give you Russian support by default then. You
can also uncheck Enable Fallbacks if the fontconfig fonts work for you.

 Is there something wrong?

 |  | Thanks,

 | Yeah,

 | This is the same problem. We need to work on making sure all modules
 conform to a fixed set of text classes.
 |

 useless for the configuration dialog as it is too specific.

 I've just updated e17, looking nice.
 Although the splash screen still shows some empty squares,
 The other ones seem to get fixed.

Right,

I forgot about those ones. I have fixed them now, they can be configured under
the Splash font classes next time you update from CVS.

Hi,

For fonts in e17 basically you have two options.
1. Use Evas font fallbacks by installing fonts in a place where
evas/enlightenment can find them and configure font fallbacks.
2. Use fontconfig fonts like Sans, Serif, monospace

Everything but Installation can be done in the Enlightenment font confiration
dialog.

For installing fonts take a look here:
