OK, I found the problem: F!@#$%^ Debian package build system is borked: it
does not warn you when you fail to include 'installed' files in the deb
packages when you are building a multi binary package (basically any library
package with a libmumbleV and and libmumble-dev package). Red Hat's
rpmbuld fails with an error if you leave files out -- you are forced to either
include the files or else delete them after they get fake root installed --
that is *every* installed file must be accounted for. Debian package builder
only complains if you try to package files that weren't installer, but quietly
ignores files leftover (installed but not packaged). Bad, very bad! After
fixing this, E18 works properly under Debian 6 and 7.

  * Did you already have e1[67] installed?
  ** yes
*** did you remove *all* remnants of that install prior to building?

Yes, I had E17 installed and I believe I removed *all* remnants of that
 install.

Oh, BTW: E18 also crashes on Debian 7, and yes it also had E17 installed and
yes I believe I removed *all* remnants of that install.

Is there something I can check to be totally sure E17 was properly cleaned
 off?

aaah. this is a common error - i have seen many broken packages as a result of
this (well reports that are a result of them) the crashing of e on start is a
new behavior though... :)

i jut build e18 on steamos wich i think is debian7 X64, no crashes so far
i see on terminology a lot of:

(nil) is not pointing to a valid object. Maybe it has already been freed.

you have compositor problems. more specifically e_comp_util_evas_object_comp_get
() returns NULL it seems - that means the object doesn't have a compositor tag
attached. which is... odd...without a gdb session on it it's not porrible to
know what kind of object, but i suspect its the wizard popup -but why would
that fail? popups work everywhere else all day long.
