There's already a relatively large number of mail clients out there
to suit different requirements of functionality and taste.  Why is
an e17 client necessary/desired?  Is it wise for devs to divert
scarce time to develop a 'me too' application, or is there some
overwhelming innovation in mail client functionality and features
that is desperate to come out?

Of course devs will do what they see fit, but I am questioning the
rational for yet another mail client application, when time and
effort can be thin on the ground.

At least I see one reason, last time I tried evolution, kmail and
thunderbird on my imap server, they took around 1GB of allocated
memory. That was just insane, and they where dead slow at doing
anything... Oh, and I have a computer I consider should never slow
down for just displaying a text (yes, most of my mail are just text).

Try claws-mail, or likely any one of a dozen others that people will
recommend now.  Though claws-mail tends to leak memory slowly.

Depend how you define it, but from my point of view, claws-mail also
use to much ressource :

Why not setup a set of goals for Applcations like you did for games and
demos on the wiki? We could prioritize them into groups: Must have, Good
to have, Like to have.

Those that are working on distros based around e17 would be a great source
for what is NEEDED and what is WANTED. Maybe Bodhi or Elive could help
out with the list. I've been working on a program for the Pandora (based on
the EFL) for awhile now and I could use a new project, but without an Idea
of whats needed I'm not sure which way to go.

Just my two cents.

It would be really great to have one :)

It certainly would :) but I don't see it happening anytime soon. The
webkit port of efl still needs lots of work :(

Is there a way to motivate all the E17 heros (programmers) to focus on this
 for some time? ;)

LOL :) Only thing I could think of would be a 'bounty' for getting it

There's already a relatively large number of mail clients out there to suit
different requirements of functionality and taste. Why is an e17 client
necessary/desired? Is it wise for devs to divert scarce time to develop a 'me
too' application, or is there some overwhelming innovation in mail client
functionality and features that is desperate to come out?

Of course devs will do what they see fit, but I am questioning the rational
for yet another mail client application, when time and effort can be thin on
the ground.

HELL NO. E17 needs to be released first. unless it's someone who would never

While I agree E17 needs to be released firstwouldn't be better launch it
with a full user experience? such as E wm + mail + browser + IM, ready for
use, just 'plug and play!'

everybody know that are tons of email clients, web browsers , irc clients and
all those things. But there are also lots of WM. Saying 'why doing that? there
are already a lot' is kind of a stupid answer in open source world. Open source
world has a lot of everithingand people keeps creating more of those things
anyway

I think both options are equally good, launchig E first or launching it with
basic common apps. But different users (and probabley devs too) will have
different opinions and tastes. We know everybody can't be please

Mom, can I have a mail client that looks like gmails conversations with my hapy

Well, the problem with that theory, is that each of those basic apps
are actually complex things to make. Just as complex as a window
manager. E17 was 10 years in the making, and getting close to a
release. You are basically asking us to take another 30 years to
develop those apps, and put the WM on hold while we do that. Some of
us might not live that long.

I second this. It makes no sense to make yet another email client. If there
is something which can be used as a library, then it makes sense to create
another user interface which is efl based. Rewriting the whole email stack,
which already took several years for other projects to get to decent state
today is pretty much a time wasting proposal. Same thoughts for IM, calendar
apps, etc.
