[e-users] Sylpheed-Claws and Window remember

2005-12-18 Thread Dano
Hello,

I'm using Sylpheed-Claws version 2.0.0-rc1 and upgraded E right now.
The sylpheed-claws window wont remember its position, size, virtual
desktop... Not sure, but i think this began with this version of
sylpheed-claws.

does it give you options to remember them? it is possible it is manually
(sylpheed) setting these values on start and thus the remembered info is not
able to work as the app is overriding it. you can lock the app out of making
such changed using locks.

I already talked to raster about this... he was pretty sure it was some
corner case of ICCCM hints or something like that. If you check out the
WM_HINTS for it using xprop, you'll notice that it says that it wants
to start iconified for whatever reason, and if you restart E, it will
indeed be iconified. My guess (totally unfounded) is that E expects it
to start iconified, but then doesn't do it, which makes it ignore the
remembered position, size, and desktop (since it's supposed to start
minimized anyway). Could definitely be wrong about that... someone
should probably look into it more closely.

sylpheed-claws changes the window title to add the name of the account
you are using at the time. It won't do that until after the remember
settings kick in. I don't know about other relevant things it
may change, because you have not added the strings to the remember
dialog like I keep asking you to. sylpheed-claws is a bitch to get
remember stuff working with for exactly this reason. You can get it to
remember with some experimentation, but then it remembers for sub
windows as well. More experimentation can get you a remember setup
that works for all it's sub windows too. Then the config format
changes, and all remember settings are deleted, and you have to start
all over again.

By all that is holy, display the strings/values that you will be
matching on in the remember dialog to make this process a lot easier.

Did you mention that globbing worked? That MIGHT help, but I won't
know know for sure until I see the strings.

it depends how you tell it to remember. by default title is not used as it is
sometimes a volatile property u cant be sure will be the same between
executions and on startup. name and class shoudl work with most well behaved
apps.

may change, because you have not added the strings to the remember
dialog like I keep asking you to. sylpheed-claws is a bitch to get

there is no point adding them. title is not rememebred WHEN u select the
rememeber properties in the dialg - if the tile changes e updates the rememebr
properties - so it's whatever the title is right now. name and class are not
really needed to be visible as they shoudl be unique to that app. if they are
not the rememebr dialog WILL complain and tell you they are not unique (as it
finds other windows with the same name and class) etc. i've made it work
without needing to know the values -a s showing them is misleading as e tracks
them as they change.

remember stuff working with for exactly this reason. You can get it to
remember with some experimentation, but then it remembers for sub
windows as well. More experimentation can get you a remember setup

if apps dont change name and class for subwindows there is not much we can do.
name and class are intended to be fixed for a window once created. title can
change. e tracks this. title is not a useufl thing generally touse to match on.
thats why there's window type and transience as dialogs are mostly transient
(unless u are firefox :) - like the download manager dialog) or they may
provide differentiating netwm window types.

that works for all it's sub windows too. Then the config format
changes, and all remember settings are deleted, and you have to start
 all over again.

By all that is holy, display the strings/values that you will be
matching on in the remember dialog to make this process a lot easier.

see above. they will be misleading. it displays a title now - EXACTLY what u
see on the window. then in 3 seconds when the title changes e modifies its
remember info to match. name and class it detects if other windows are around
it knows it may clash with. i don't WANt to display those propetties ther
because they just are misleading. i have on the TOD a window info dialog
page. that woudl give you name, class, role, type, - in fact all the properties
e has read from the window and stored.

Did you mention that globbing worked? That MIGHT help, but I won't
