sounds like that theme doesnt fully work - could be an efreet issue or simply
theme is incomplete. other icon themes work?

Yeah i tried that actually, but some of them still didnt come up. it was
weird, for example, iceweasel icon only flashed on mouse over but other
than that it was blank in the tray.

just select an icon theme in settings... problem is every distro comes with
different icon themes so pretty much this is left up to the user to set.

Yes ive noticed this issue as well. It's a problem in the way e17 is
reading the .destop files
in the desktop file thats in the debian dist (/usr/share) it only has
the program name, which e17 then cannot locate the correct icon. the
failure to set it manually via the GUI is due to the window manager not
having write permission to the icon directory. I suggest you (or i)
could file an upstream bug report to sort it out.

in the meantime to fix it i copied the desktop file to my
.local/share/applications/ and set the full filepath for the icon in
that one.
