[Mozilla Enterprise] What is Compatibility Mode?

2018-05-21 Thread John R. Sweet

I am trying to access the online property data on this site:
https://treasurer.bathcountyva.org/applications/txapps/PropCardsIndex.htm

This link brings up an otherwise blank page with the line:
"To access this site, please acknowledge the following statement:"
The statement box is blank and the "Accept" button below it is inactive.

I wrote to the owner of the site asking, "What do I need to do?"

Following is the result of that inquiry. Can anyone suggest a solution?
Thanks, JRS

You may need be compatibility mode for the site. I clicked the link
and came up to "accept the terms". after clicking accept the terms
you will be directed to the options for property cards.

Um, sorry but I have no clue what that means. I use Firefox and have

FF Tools menu does not offer that choice. I also looked under Tools | Options

trying. JRS

Re: [Mozilla Enterprise] ESR52 vs "modern" javascript

2018-04-20 Thread John R. Sweet

This conflict between "modern javascript" and legacy extensions -- or whatever
the heck is going on -- is a really bad situation. We need a couple of extensions that
won't work past v 52esr and the later versions *also* have serious layout issues as noted
here previously. About a week ago I tried to run a video [can't recall on what site] and
was told it required the latest version of FF. Today I tried to look at an article on a
newspaper site and it came up as a blank page with the newspaper's masthead across the
top.

This whole thing is getting to be a *serious* issue of functionality. JRS

Hi Perry,

If you're saying you need both legacy extensions and the quantum engine, I think your
only option is to run two browsers. The easiest way I know of to do this is by using the
"developer edition" for one of them.

ESR52 produces blank pages when more and more sites apparently try to
render things with what must be ?modern? javascript.

Is there any hope of a workaround? My legacy extension that I critically
require runs only on ESR52, and porting it is still quite a trick.

Thanks!

 Perry

Re: [Mozilla Enterprise] Enterprise 80-13, Add-ons and Layout

2018-02-17 Thread John R. Sweet

Hi Emma, Thanks for the reply. I tried the link you suggested and it does not offer
much for me. Only two of my add-ons returned anything at all, even those that I think
have been updated. If I put in the name of an updated add-on will it tell me that it is
OK? In most instances, after I've typed a few characters it says "Not Found"
or words to that effect. Thanks, JRS

[Mozilla Enterprise] Layout options in latest versions of FF

2018-02-15 Thread John R. Sweet

Greetings Folks,

We are holding firm with v. 52.5.3esr and not allowing any updates until some
of the issues are resolved. We have at least one important add-on in the old
format. I am talking with its developer, hoping that it will be brought up to
the new standard. I'm not sure about a couple of other add-ons. Is there any
way to find out whether these will work with the newer FF versions without
doing the installation and then finding that some add-ons do not work?

In addition to add-on issues, there are two important layout options that are
missing from the latest versions. Do the FF developers at Mozilla read this
e-mail thread? If not, how should I go about getting their attention so that
these options can be restored? Please see the attached screen shot.

1. We want text buttons in the toolbar. Everyone here reads and understands
English. We do not want inscrutable little icons when simple English words
will serve better. This is an option in all versions up to 56 but not in 57.

2. The tab bar belongs /below/ the toobar, next to the pages that it
represents, not separated from those pages by a misplaced toolbar. This too is
an option in versions up to 56 but not in 57.

These should be easy fixes. Please help me get this request to the developer.

Thanks and Best Wishes,JRS

[Mozilla Enterprise] Update problem

2018-01-07 Thread John R. Sweet

Greetings!

We were running FF v. 56.0.2 and all was well until we upgraded to v. 57, at
which point add-ons were lost, layout could not be restored as desired -- a
whole list of problems. I was advised not to go back to v. 56 but to install
the ESR version. I downloaded and installed 52.5.3esr and everything was
fine -- add-ons and layout were back to normal. Wow, what a relief. For two
days only. We have automatic updates turned off but, this afternoon, I found
FF updated to v. 57 again, and everything was in a mess again. I reinstalled
52.5.3esr, figuring that would fix it, but no. Even though I installed the
same version as two days ago, it now looks just like 57 did -- no add-ons and
screwy layout and no way to change it.

If anyone can help with this I would be grateful. Our goal is to get to a
version that looks like v. 56 but without the security issues. 52.5.3esr did
that but it lasted for only two days.

Thanks and Best Wishes,JRS
