Objet : **NewsLetter** [Mozilla Enterprise] Slow search over combined address
and search bar

Dear all,

i have some users who are facing a delay if they type some search pattern to
the address bar until their search provider (google is configured) is opened in
firefox.
they are using the combined address and search bar. It wont happen if they use
the separated address and search bar.

We all are using same FF version 68.5.0 x64 on Windows 10 x64.

I cant reproduce it on my device (takes 3-4 sec if I provide one word and only
1-2 second if provide two or more words). The colleagues have a delay of 10-15
seconds.
I already created a new firefox profile but the delay is still there.

I know that if you enter only one word that it checks for a website with that
name but it should always use searching if I enter two or more words.

Any hints on that?

Regards,

Sascha

(sorry if this doesn't thread right, I only just joined this list)

Regarding how the dedicated profiles per install feature works, there is
currently no difference between how it works on normal Firefox builds and
ESR.

New versions of Firefox are not new installations. The installation is
defined by the installation directory.

As long as you are upgrading the Firefox version by putting the new version
into the same directory that the old version was in then users would
continue to use the same profile. We are currently seeing an edge case
where that is breaking right now on Windows but I'm expecting to have that
fixed before Firefox 68 ships.

There is currently no policy setting to disable this feature, there is
currently an environment variable that can be set (though it's targeted at
a different use case right now, so if important I'd like to use a different
name for it) but it applies to any version and channel of Firefox.

thanks for your answer.

As I metioned before,

"We deploy firefox on windows clients by removing/purgings old versions und
redeploy firefox by choosing x86/x64 / language / Version (esr or standard, at
the moment 60.7.0 or 67.0)"

In more detail:

Usually the new firefox version is the in the same place, but upgrading from
66.0.5 to 67.0 led to a new

installs.ini which points to a new default profile (therefore users thoud they
lost their bookmarks)

So we mad an ugly workaround? after installing firefox in opsi-script patching
existing profiles:

...

??? If ( $usededicatedprofilesperfirefoxinstallation$ = "false")
??? Set $profile.ini.profile.0.path$ =
GetValueFromInifile($akt_profile_ini$,"Profile0","path","")
??? if ( $profile.ini.profile.0.path$ = "" )
??? Logwarning " do nothing "
??? else???
??? if NOT(FileExists($akt_profile_installs_ini$))

Dear all,

I am using a master password and after upgrading to esr60.1.0 I

application and the password
windows but none of them are accessible. After killing process and
using another profile

password then, close FF and start
it, it working as expected, asking for password and starts FF.

For my default profile I have found an workaround, right click on
firefox icon, start a private
tab, then it asks for password and I can enter it, after starting
private tab I start the normal
ones and then it works. But after close and regular start same
problem with inaccessible password
/application window again.

I never had that problem before and I have never seen it here in

we are still on esr52.

Any idea on that?

Is there a work around for add-ons not having to be verified with Mozilla? The
preference setting "xpinstall.signature.required = false" used to work prior to
Firefox Quantum. Are all Firefox add-ons required to be verified thru Mozilla?

Thanks for the suggestion Mike. We tried that on a handful of systems and it
didn?t seem to have any effect.

The one clue we have, that may not even be relevant at all?, is that it works
the way we want in Firefox 45ESR.

I don't see a preferences in particular for that case. I think you can disable
the whole thing by setting:

security.insecure_password.ui.enabled

to false.

We want to have it auto-save peoples? password , and not drop down the box
which confuses the user. The plan is to deploy FF60ESR to everyone in the
organization in the coming weeks.

Here is the prompt I?m referring to:
ftp://ftp2.valleyair.org/Outgoing/2D8h1x23bB7O/ff_pw_prompt.png

We?re setting to false: security.insecure_field_warning.contextual.enabled
?and setting to true: signon.autofillForms.http

So it auto-fills the password form field, just pops the box prompting the user
to select a stored password to fill with.

Is there any way to disable this completely for a specific site or for just
fields in general that have no username associated?

I thought the correct process is to write a specification, then build a product
that meets that specification, not the other way around. See below.

Sure, any coder with enough time can look at the code and describe what it
does. But if today?s changes seem to be not documented anywhere, who knows what
changes will be checked in tomorrow (possibly making any documentation we try
to write incorrect)?

it works. So right now, I have them set by GPO and a config file.

This is working in our testing. You are supposed to add a URL like
https://foo.com or http://foo.com. And you have to add separate entries for
http and https.

I've also found out that the most restricted GPO Win, so if a
machine GPO disable about :config and a user GPO enable it, it will be disabled.

This is working as it should - machine GPOs are favored over user GPOs.

Hello,

It would be great in the GPO Help text if it include which about :config value
is changed and for what depending on the state. Also, if changing a GPO render
other GPO or other about config useless, would also be great. I'm currently
migrating my config to the GPO available and I'm struggling to see if some are

Subject: Re: [Mozilla Enterprise] Investigate why so many people wrongly
subscribe to this list (was: RE: Quantum ESR)

one reason some people that fail to unsubscribe from the list might be that
the instructions at the bottom of each email do not describe the complete
procedure:
> ___
> Enterprise mailing list
> Enterprise@mozilla.org
> https://mail.mozilla.org/listinfo/enterprise
>
> To unsubscribe from this list, please visit
https://mail.mozilla.org/listinfo/enterprise or send an email to
enterprise-requ...@mozilla.org with a subject of "unsubscribe"
in addition to visiting that listinfo page, you have to:

- enter the subscribed email address into the form field for unsubscribing
(find out with which email address you are actually subscribed and enter
that one into the correct(!) field)
- wait for an email with another link (which might end up in a different
folder than you might expect)
- click on that second link (no, you are still not unsubscribed at this
point!)
- on that page again confirm that you really want to unsubscribe by pressing
the unsubscribe button
- wait for the confirmation mail that you finally have been unsubscribed.

basically it is the same procedure as you were following to subscribe.
Maybe it is possible to add this procedure to some general Mozilla FAQ page
and add a link to that entry in the email footer

It also interacts with print.use_global_printsettings, which is enabled by

is remembered for all printing. When disabled, the user's previous selections

Mozilla friends..

I'm looking for the about:config settings which manage the Print | Page Setup
options.

Specifically.. the Orientation.

When I look at the available options for print.
(example: https://www.screencast.com/t/UqjEYZDFOotw )
I don't see the one which would correspond.

Thanks in advance.

I was unaware of this until now, but just discovered
https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__www.mail-2Darchive.com_enterprise-40mozilla.org_maillist.html=DwICAg=_2JymsjkoSdpgdT4DmA4bg=x1vFj7lIm80-CNlNoiyv9jaBMT8NGLV7E7ANm3fRCyc=zHuhwuJ-1wBc3Yxqi415SlGD1QfFmlVaeLLaNvNOheE=cOIN3asogVwSnE0kn9YklnbjmDWpj4Vh8VZ66qbhNik=
. It doesn't appear to search very well but you can google *"pdfjs.disabled =
TRUE" site:https://www.mail-archive.com
* and get far more from their lists than just enterprise.

Good luck with your search. I'm interested to know what you find other than
perhaps a bug.

I wanted to search the Enterprise list archives.

So I logged on with my username and password. It succeeded.. and it brought me
here (screenshot: https://cl.ly/25370f353k2h )

Is there some non-obvious way to search thru all the discussions for a
particular text string?

Meanwhile.. if NO... here's my question.  I've been trying to figure out how to
get ALL PDFs to force open in the registered PDF reader.
(So, Acrobat, Edge.. whatever.)

I want to do this without manually running around to each machine.

I have figured out from Google/Binging that the values others have reported to
do the trick are:

  1.  About:config  pdfjs.disabled = TRUE and
  2.  Plugin.disable_full_page_plugin_for_types

I've been fiddling with both values ..
... setting the first value to TRUE/ LOCK  FALSE/LOCK  and
... setting the second value to LOCK / not locked ...

But don't get the RESULT I want.

All I've got so far is:

  1.  It will download and not open in FF.
  2.  But, it will also not magically open in the registered PDF application.

Yes, yes.. if I manually twiddle this GUI value.. it works perfectly:
https://cl.ly/1e3S3K3y1039
But that's not what I want.

The goal is to download all PDFs then open them for display in the registered
PDF application on the machine.

Looking for config file way to manage the setting. Thanks in advance.

It's amazing isn't it ? ... that people who must be sysadmins
responsible for deploying one of the most important items of software
used in any enterprise don't read the subscription confirmation email,
are unable to see what's 5 lines below where they're typing when
replying, have next to no understanding of the usage protocols for
mailing lists (a standard support mechanism), and pay no attention to
netiquette (commonly sending their unsubscribe request by way of a
reply to a huge digest email which they thoughtlessly fail to trim).

I used to let it annoy and horrify me, but these days I'm trying to
view it in the same light as the existence of Trump - entertainment :)

James, I haven’t other than it’s been reported that they acknowledged it.
That’s why I asked here because I know it’s monitored.

To be clear though, this is NOT the same vulnerability that was just patched.

Dear ladies and gentlemen,

we?ve a few questions about the use of Firefox on our TS Systems.

Is it possible to deactivate any video player so that it is not possible to
watch a video anymore?
Is it also possible to use the configuration file for it?

We want to use Mozilla Firefox on our TS-Farm, but if it is not possible to
deactivate videos it doesn?t make sense for us.

Also is it possible to add certificates in Firefox automatically from the IE?

Kind regards

Hello,

I am currently using the following method of importing certificates into
Firefox ESR:

On the flip side, is there a way to remove old certifocates using a
similar method?

Thanks!

I have gotten the impression, over the last dozen years, that many
facilities that are intended to be helpful for naive users are helpful - 95%
of the time. The other 5% of the time they make accomplishing a less naive
task more difficult (or occasionally impossible).

Since ESR installers are presumably not naive, and since ESR is meant for
site-wide deployment, why is this sort of "help" even considered?

What I use to download Firefox ESR is a BASH script which takes the version
number and then downloads all the current language-specific ESRs (Linux and
Windows, 32-bit and 64-bit), plus the SHA512 checksum files from
"https://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/releases/;
into a standard place, renaming the files a bit to "clean them up".
Then I run a related script to verify the checksums. (I also do the
equivalent for new Thunderbird versions, although its ESR is no more.)

I can provide these scripts if anyone is interested. (I would imagine they
could serve as models for Windows PowerShell scripts as well.)

Hi Everybody,

I am trying to install an extension called OKTA (Single Sigh On tool)
globally on our Windows enterprise. What ever I do, when launching the
Firefox, it again asks to Enable or allow the extension. Please help me on
how to distribute extensions to enterprise.

Steps I took:

1. Am able to install it by copying the extracted XPI files to
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\browser\extensions" folder with ID
(plu...@okta.com) as the folder name . But the user
still have to enable it. Edited the Install.rdf file

Subject: [Mozilla Enterprise] What exactly does the uninstall
helper.exe do?
Message-ID:
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="windows-1252"

After deploying Firefox 45 ESR, some machines are throwing an error on first
run ?Installer corrupted: invalid opcode? and I noticed some GUI issues on
them. I discovered that uninstalling Firefox with the helper.exe prior to
deploying prevented those issues.

I wanted to dig deeper and find what exactly was causing this. So instead
of using helper.exe, I deleted:

  *   %ProgramFiles(x86)%\Mozilla Firefox
  *   %UserProfile%\AppData\Local\Mozilla
  *   %UserProfile%\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla
  *   HKLM\Software\Mozilla
  *   HKLM\Software\MozillaPlugins
  *   HKCU\Software\Mozilla
  *   HKCU\Software\MozillaPlugins

But still the same issues! So what else is helper.exe doing?

Hello,

please see https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/40.0/releasenotes/

Therefore Windows is official (!) supported since Firefox 40RR.
Therefore Firefox 45ESR seems to be the first official Firefox ESR release for
windows 10.

In other words when you plan to migrate to windows 10 now, firefox is already
supported!

I don't know exactly but I think before Firefox 40 there were some problems
regarding setting firefox as standard browser.

Best regards

Sebastian Metzger

Does ESR make Firefox any easier to manage in the enterprise? I have around
3400 PCs spread throughout the state, some of which don't connect to the
network with any regularity.

Is it difficult to implement? I use SCCM for most software deployments, and we
would also bake it into the gold image that we use.

Hello,

First, we should release 45.0.2esr today, Tuesday (we released the regular
45.0.2 version yesterday).

Because we delayed Firefox 46, Firefox 45.1.0esr and 38.8.0esr are delayed by a
week too.
As we publish security advisories, these releases have to be push the same day.

Hope this helps,
Sylvestre
