setup... Cable Modem---Router each has a static IP. The
Samba (Mandrake 9) Box is also a PDC.. The xp pro box connects to the
Domain on the Samba Server.. However pulls a DNS from the Cable company
for internet regardless of the PDC.. If i open a WWW Browser on the PDC
it is instantaneous.. If i open one on the XP Box i get a 30 second
delay?? I have tried almost anything I can think of to include removing
wins altogether making it only resolve using broadcast. I put the Samba
DNS IP Address at the bottom of the list on the xp box with 5 other
DNS's from the cable company on top.. Installed SignOrSeal,,, any

2003-04-02 Thread Beaker (aka Jeff W)
This might be interesting to hear -Beaker

 Original Message
From: - Wed Apr 02 13:27:13 2003
From: Ken Barber [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Subject: [laneopensource] HB 2892 - history in the making
Oregon's House Bill 2892, a piece of legislation that I wrote,
will be heard at 8:30 am tomorrow (Thursday) morning (Pacific
Coast time) by the General Government committee of Oregon's House
of Representatives.
As far as I know, It will be the first time in history for a bill
dealing with Open Source Software to make it this far in the
United States.
You can listen to the committee hearing live via the Internet on
the state legislature's web site. Click here
http://www.leg.state.or.us/listn/listenset.htm

and choose audio: live today. Where you click from there
varies from hour to hour, but you want to look for the House
General Government Committee hearing. There are two General
Government committees, one for the House and one for the Senate.
You want the one for the HOUSE.
There might, or might not, also be live video available. If it's
there, you'll have to poke around to find it.
You will need RealPlayer installed on your computer for this to
work. If you don't have RealPlayer there is a link at the bottom
of the above-referenced Web page to the site where you can
download it.
You can listen to the committee hearing later by clicking on the
archives link at the bottom of the page.
The committee chair has allotted one hour for consideration of
this bill, and it will be the first one heard. The bill's
proponents get the first half-hour and its opponents get the last
half-hour. We do not know at this time what form the opposition
will take.
Please feel free to forward this to anyone, anywhere, including
any Open Source-related email lists. Heck, you can even post it
to Slashdot if you wish -- I don't have time.
I have not sent this to my mother. If anyone has the time to
explain to her what all this means, feel free to do so!
Ken

This will give me more time to coordinate our efforts without needing
to worry so much about theirs.
Here's BSA's mission statement:
http://www.bsa.org/usa/
About BSA

Promoting a safe and legal online world

The Business Software Alliance (BSA) is the foremost organization
dedicated to promoting a safe and legal online world.
We are the voice of the worlds software, hardware and Internet
sectors before governments and with consumers in the international
marketplace. BSA members represent the fastest growing industries in
the world.
BSA educates computer users on software copyrights and cyber
security; advocates public policy that fosters innovation and expands
trade opportunities; and fights software piracy.
Established in 1988, BSA has programs in 65 countries worldwide.
My guess is thier opposition is based on the association of open
source with the GPL = goes against their stated support of
intellectual property rights. AFAIK, this bill doesn't stipulate
consideration of GPL'ed software, just that the software be open source,
of which there are many license alternatives. Maybe they need some
educating :)

I hope this will clarify how it works and answer Josheph's e-mail
about homepna. It works very well. You get dsl speeds nothing
super fast. But if there are a lot of guest on it will slow down
due to the bottleneck at the dsl going out. I got between 450-600
in the guest rooms.
You misunderstand my concern, ... [u]nless you have ethernet to
homepna bridges in each room...
This appears to be the case: There was a nice picture of the hardware
tree at the bottom of the converter link previously provided by Tim.
There is a homePNA-Ethernet converter in each room, into which both the
phone your laptop tap. Take a look at

http://www.handlink.com.tw/eng/products/homepna/pec120/products_homepna_pec120.htm#

Of course the converter isn't free, but you can then manage both the
telephones and internet connections through one medium, and - at least
on new construction - you could avoid having to wire for either or both
Ethernet and phone: a lot of wire.

Actually, I've been writing up minutes (they're on euglug.org), but
generally only for special events. I'd write up the clinics too, but I'm
not there every Wed/Thur and often there simply isn't (at least in my

That still asks, how to enforce.
802.1x can use MAC based authentication. That would require the
customer to supply the MAC address before they can use it. But the
whole point is moot since they don't really care who uses it, they just
need/want to know how many are using.
Couldn't you just make some sort a educated guessimate on
typical/average packets/room/day and then look at total number of
packets for a given period? Alternately, you could conduct some
sampling*, say 5-15% of the rooms over a week or two, then apply either
a normal or student-T distribution curve to extrapolate to the total
number of rooms.

-beaker

* This would require some sort of go-between box or a user/password
situation. You could sweeten the deal to get guests to comply: maybe a
free movie?

Yes, thats it. Here's some excerpts from an internetnews.com article

The crux of the matter, according to the statement, is that the
[ATT] UNIX shared libraries, owned by SCO, are not Linux products.
They are not open source software and they are not covered by the
GPL.

Linux is based on UNIX and at least in theory, SCO apparently thinks
it might be possible to build a case that says some of its rights are
being violated. Linux is widely assumed to be open source software
developed by volunteers that can be freely downloaded.

[Eug-lug]Sendmail help/hack needed

2003-02-20 Thread Beaker (aka Jeff W)
Does anyone know how I might go about enabling incoming mail via
sendmail directly to my box, assuming it has a valid, world-readable
address? I've always just used either fetchmail or similar, but I've got
valid name now and thought it would be nice to just have it send
directly, assuming its not a hugh security risk. With my current default
sendmail setup (running as 'sendmail -db -q30m') I get the following error:
---

I probably need some sort of hack to do this, no? I think if I can
configure things to only accept mail from one particular relay and to
one particular name, then it shouldn't be too risky, eh?

If you have a mixed hardware environment (such as mac, pc, sun, ...) and all
the computers must run the same OS, then linux is probably your only answer.

And if you want the OS to be consistent across that mixed hardware, then
Debian and NetBSD are likely the only choice.

Ben - FWIW, I run the WMX window manager on NetBSD-1.6 with Dillo, XV,
Cool-Edit, and a few other things on a Sparc IPX (50Mhz; 64M RAM) and as
long as I don't try to resize/move windows too fast, it works pretty
well. The worst thing is the CG6 framebuffer (8 bit color), which as you

[Eug-lug]Resurrecting Gopherspace

2003-01-07 Thread Beaker (aka Jeff W)
Recently freeshell.org resurrected their gopherspace
(gopher://gopher.freeshell.org) with the idea that not only would it
help slow the protocol's demise, gopher's uniformity and starkness
make it unappealing to the various commercial interests that some feel
have monopolized the http protocol. I like gopher's intrinsic emphasis
of content over presentation and am trying to think of useful and
interesting ways I could add to the existing gopherspace (which is very
small apparently); maybe a gopher://euglug.org ?

BTW, the gopher protocol has some support in current browsers. By far
the best appears to be Lynx and Mosaic. Sadly, gopher support is broken
in Mozilla and its derivatives (except possibly Navigator), and
non-existent in Dillo, Konqerour, and Links. Oddly, IE still support it.
There are various console-based gopher clients, the primary one being
from U of MN, the creators of the protocol.

And for all you activists: http://www.scn.org/~bkarger/gopher-manifesto

Re: [Eug-lug]Resurrecting Gopherspace

2003-01-07 Thread Beaker (aka Jeff W)
.. There's no
reason why you can't map a hierarchical gopher-like structure to a web
site using little or no HTML and Apache's intrinsic directory listings.
Or even using anonymous ftp for that matter.

I agree - there is no point in having/maintaining separate file trees. I
_do_ think being able to do gopher-specific searches would be
advantageous, since you wouldn't be wading through the whole web. And of
course, anyone that needs to use a text-based interface would find the
consistancy of gopherspace a relief.

Mozilla 1.0 appears to have gopher support enough to work with gofish -
in what ways is its support broken? (okay, I just discovered the location
field doesn't properly update the URI, but besides that.)

Try it w/ Mozilla 1.2.1 . You get the initail tree display and thats
about it. The work-around in mentioned in Bugzilla is to use a gopher proxy.

[Eug-lug]ISO unusal graph/chart program

2003-01-06 Thread Beaker (aka Jeff W)
I'm looking for a program - preferably OS of course - that can generate
a circular bar chart (basically it looks like a pie chart but each slice
is actually a bar radiating out from the center). Ideally, the program
would accept simple ASCII data files as input. Something that can run in
a browser would be perfect, but that isn't a necessity.

Any ideas?

Anyways, the nearest looking thing I've found is something called a

Re: [Eug-lug]Dan's text based computer system

2002-12-15 Thread Beaker (aka Jeff W)
Here are the facts:

Dan does not want to use a graphical user interface (GUI) to
relate to his computer (that means no windows, icons, mice,
or pointers).
snip

He has a philosophical/political preference for
free (as in speech) software and would rather not continue
using Windows 95 and its lame Internet Mail program with no
spell checking.
snip

Dan actually has the software on his computer (Debian 3.0).

snip

For some reason Dan is unwilling to spend the necessary time
and effort to read the instructions and figure it out for
himself.
snip

For some reason no on else from EUGLUG is willing
to do this for him for free (as in beer).

*Reality Check!*
Dan sounds like a bundle of contidictions and perhaps _should_ stick
with Windows. Why should anyone help someone for free if they aren't
willing to invest at least an equal amount of time themselves.

Opps - I should of checked the rules page - seems that refueling IS

however wireless internet communications apparently ISN'T - only GPS

Checkpoint(s)
A checkpoint is a required safety stop at a pre-defined location on the
course. The chase vehicle occupants can be rotated or refreshed with no
time penalty against the autonomous vehicle. The elapsed time for each
vehicle will stop during the mandatory portion of a stop. In addition,
an entry may be serviced autonomously (for example, refueled or
cleaned). Any required autonomous servicing equipment must be placed at
the checkpoint prior to the start of the race. The location of the

I've got a hardware question: how hot is too hot WRT hard drives? The
Fujitsu 4 GB UltraSCSI drive I just did an install on is a little loud
and seems to run hot, though no errors were experienced during the
install. I stuck an digital thermometer on it: 97.1 F. This was with the
case open the drive sitting on top, so it wasn't getting the benefit
of normal case cooling. Does that seem too hot?

That doesn't sound too bad, but you might want to check the drive
manufacturer's physical spec sheets to determine temperature range. A
quick browse over http://hdd.fujitsu.com/global/drive/ suggests that they
can generally tolerate up to 120F. You might check out your specific
